Sunsetting User-to-User Inbox Messaging

Roblox employee people were probably like: “hm let’s add a feature to detect spam. hmm, we have lots of spam. what did you say? add a spam protection system? no, too complicated, we don’t get paid enough so let’s get rid of messaging”

-- Roblox players need to chill out on being so retro nostalgic about an outdated feature used almost exclusively for scamming. In my like 14 years on this site I don’t think I’ve ever made actual use of the inbox feature beyond annoying a bunch of randos when I was a kid.

-- Please be for real for once, maintaining a spam detection system that bad actors will constantly find ways to work around just to save a feature that’s used more by said bad actors than by anyone legitimate, even for a huge corporation, is stupid. Actual horrible use of resources.

Hey anybody remember Sets ? This kinda reminds me of that.

-- It’s… Sets??? These were only relevant for specifically building games when stuff like the Stamper Tool was a thing and those were horribly insecure. I shouldn’t have to explain why it’s a bad idea to have user-maintained lists of models that can be edited at any time that games will actively pull from.
-- I think sometimes y’all just have to learn to let go of a completely dead redundant feature and stop pretending you care about it just to get mad about something insanely munande. :sob:

Messages can be the only way to formally communicate with developers on platform. Its essentially on platform email. Without this it will be impossible in some cases to communicate to people not on your friends list.

this is a bad idea

User->User messaging has been greatly helpful over the years for developers, although outdated, roblox does not provide any official mediums for developers to receieve feedback.

There are so many better alternatives than just getting rid of a tride and true feature;

Make it so users can only use the feature if 13+ id verified
Add real developer feedback mediums that dont require programming or external websites / programs.
Make it so the feature has to be manually turned on.

When the announcement is made by the official @Roblox account, you know it sucks!

“I’ve never used the group feature, and it’s very old , therefore it must be removed” - See how this argument fails?
Also it’s not even being removed. It’s being locked for users to message each other. While Roblox still will, and all messages will be archived. So it’s entirely pointless.

I use it dozens of times a week, for communication with roblox clans and groups. This isn’t pointless a large part of the community.

Roblox clans and groups also use Discord to communicate nowadays, I’ve been part of this community for years so I know. Also very niche.

Honestly, I don’t see it. If something is unused, old and obsolete, what reasons do you have to keep it?

How is this even relevant? The feature in question is being able to send DMs to other people, nobody cares if Roblox still keeps it for system messages.

Because it’s old but not obsolete. A lot of people still use. Just not relative to Roblox’s current player base.

-- No, I don’t see how this argument fails. Because groups are unironically useful and can’t be replaced by 40 other better alternatives. Nearly every user on the platform either directly or indirectly interacts with groups whether they are aware of it or not. Groups may be one of if not the most useful features on the website right now.

-- Inboxes are one of the worst ways of communicating imaginable next to the group wall comments and can easily be replaced. There is no point devoting resources to maintaining an outdated, underutilized, redundant feature (and yes, even if they aren’t actively improving or updating it they still have to maintain it)

If it can be easily replaced, why hasn’t roblox replaced it?

-- Easily replaced by you the user. Not everything you do has to be done on Roblox.
-- Right now, at this exact moment in time there are 40 better alternatives to Roblox messages that take no effort to use.

Are any of these alternatives on the Roblox platform? If not, then that’s not an alternative to messages, it’s another platform.

-- There is no benefit to communicating on Roblox vs any other platform. Especially when you have to factor in dodging the filter unless you want your message to randomly become a huge wall of tags while still being sent anyways.

Unfortunately this isn’t a good alternative. it just got my game and my alt account banned

When a user has a problem with an experience such as in-game purchase, Roblox staff refers them to contact the developer directly, removing that pathway is going to create a loophole that will be VERY problematic. I can 100% guarantee you that Roblox is NOT going to start fielding these issues. Roblox is also NOT going to direct players who have such issues to 3rd party apps or contact information. So what happens when a user has a problem with a game, such as a gamepass or dev product that isn’t working, that is not a group game, but rather one tied to an individual developer account?

I’m sorry, I can 100% guarantee you staff has NOT thought this through very well. Like many things Roblox does clearly without forethought, this will not go well. You are going to have players which can not be directed off platform who will have problems in games and it will be a disaster like with the Surface Appearance where support will not be trained and will tell the user to contact a developer that they will now have no way of doing so. For example, a player who is 8 years old isn’t going to be directed to lie about their age to make a social media account, but they are allowed to have and spend Robux, and they can certainly have problems with purchases in a game.

I see no evidence in this post that Roblox has thought this through at all, so please I would like to know, how is support going to handle things like refund requests? How will they handle them with purchases made from younger players who can’t even use social media or join Discord? Will Roblox be allowing email addresses to be provided? How exactly will these player’s issues be handled now? Because right now, an under 13 player can’t even see our social tabs at all.

If Roblox history is any indicator, this little complication hasn’t even been thought about yet.

I don’t think it would unless you violated some of the external link rules.

Any idea which rules moderation thought were violated?

What’s especially offensive about this update is that every social platform has a Message system. It’s one of THE most basic features you can have. Even online games have a messaging feature! Yet the Roblox Administration, in all their flawless wisdom that has never steered them wrong once or gotten Roblox in hot water, has decided that the website is better off without it.

Let’s all be honest here. This is about their investors, not about the safety of their users. Roblox has been trending more recently across social media, with criticisms against them about child and user safety, with more…“unsavory” people being ousted on the website. Gotta keep the investors happy and the money flowing! So they hit the panic button, and instead of actually improving their moderation, and taking steps to keep users safe, they remove the offending feature instead. We all saw them do this with the forums, as the prime example.

Hilariously enough, this won’t even address the core issue Roblox faces with its moderation and user safety. Some of their staff should really hop on alternate accounts and spend some time in some of the largest games on the website. Or maybe they shouldn’t, as I can only imagine them removing the chat feature outright after seeing what goes on in games.
