Supposedly public sound effects return "User is not authorized to access Asset" in other games

Audio is playable on the website. I am approved to distribute and have marked the audio as distributable on the Creator Store. The audio is classified as “Audio / Sound Effect”.

I get this error after trying to use it in another person’s game.

(Transcription: Failed to load sound https://www.roblox.com/asset/?id=128224677452487: User is not authorized to access Asset.)

Here’s the sound effect in question. The same issue occurs with all public sound effects uploaded on my account.

The steps I followed are these:

  1. Export a short sound effect from FL Studio as an .ogg file (I have also tried with an .mp3 file, to no avail)
  2. Upload it to the roblox website at https://create.roblox.com/dashboard/creations/upload?assetType=Audio
  3. Wait for the audio to finish processing
  4. Toggle Distribute on Creator Store on, and wait a few minutes to ensure the change is in effect
  5. Attempt to use the audio in someone else’s game, such as Audio Controller
  6. Observe as the audio does not load

Expected behavior

I expect to be able to use public audio anywhere on the platform, rather than just my own games - else, there’s no point in me distributing public sound effects in the first place.

@X3Corsaka thanks for reporting the issue, and apologies that you are facing playback related friction. We are planning on making changes in the future that will make free audio available in experiences without the creator of the experience needing the audio in their inventory. When this is added it should reduce the number of issues you get from this method.

We are testing this feature in our dev environments, and plan on launching this soon. We’ll reply back here as soon as we have an update.

@headinclouds_ash We’re also having the same issues with our own Audio uploaded to our own groups used in our own games and players have been reporting playback issues, I have DMed you a list of Ids with this error

Have you saved the asset to your inventory? It’s weird but sometimes that’s the only way for me to get rid of the error.

It’s my sound. It’s already in my inventory. But just to confirm, I tried it with it deleted and tried it after re-adding it again. No change.

I have the same problem. Our studio has been waiting literally years to have our own music in our our games. Our music has finally started trickling onto Roblox recently via DistroKid. In Studio test, everything is working like magic. In live test, User is not authorized to access Asset. :upside_down_face:

Assets are saved to inventory, nothing. Tried it with Assets saved to everybody in the game’s inventory. Nothing still.

And it isn’t just this example. For example, in another unrelated game the police siren sound in a car randomly stopped working and has the same issue now. Same issue with a widely used Boombox in another game.

Hello players in my game Starving Sculptors (DONATION GAME) - Roblox have been complaining about the Booth Radio gamepass not working. When you use public audios that are literally on the front page for audio it’ll error saying “User is not authorized to access asset”. Sometimes it works and other times it doesn’t.

Hopefully this can get fixed ASAP as the impact is pretty severe. Thanks!

Hey folks, we release a change late last week which would allow Creators to use publicly uploaded SFX and Creator Store free audio (e.g from DistroKid) freely without having to add to inventory or add to experience. Could you please confirm if you retry this week, that this issue is now resolved?

At least for me, all public audio seems to be working again, yes! Thank you!
