[Test] Encouraging users to complete an age check to chat

There are probably many reasons it won’t and that is because some children may convince their parents or siblings to do the selfie and/or ID verification for them, and users may still find out ways to chat with fellow Roblox players on other platforms. Plus, some Roblox games may still figure out a way to have a custom “bypassed” chat, unfiltered and/or open to everyone.

Wait so I don’t think this was mentioned in the original post, so this will essentially prevent 18- users to chat with 18+ users? That WILL ruin games. All because Roblox will not for the life of them, hire better moderators… Fucking shame on them.

Yes, their plan is to completely separate <18 (estimated) users from 18+ (estimated or verified) users in chat, even if the older user does not have bad intentions. I could be wrong but they may be considering an exception for people who can somehow prove they already know each other in real life. Users over 13 will also be separated from users under 13 in Roblox chat. This will be significantly disruptive to many genres on Roblox.

It doesn’t. Predators are just going to follow children off platform and talk to them somewhere else. I don’t really care if BossSpax thinks this not being mentioned in any of roblox’s lawsuits matters, because this is just simple problem-solving skills even a low-IQ child predator could come up with. It’s even worse that children don’t know cybersecurity 101 and just use the same usernames everywhere.

you’re telling me, that users will have to show their real face and send it to a large money hungry corporation filled with weird old men, just to chat?

even at best this will cause large scale uproar which it ALREADY has, driving a chunk of users off roblox!

imagine how it’ll be when chats are mostly barren with barely anyone talking because they CAN’T, because they don’t want to send data of their face to roblox, this is genuinely stupid.

also, games which rely on communication (Strategic games, Roleplay games/Hangout games, etc) which are many by the way, will suffer greatly from this.

don’t, just don’t.

Why don’t we just remove the platform at this point?

It’s funny how Roblox continues through with this, even with essentially nobody linking these updates. An example of this is the “connections” update. In it, I could not find even one person who actually wanted it.

You can count on me to keep coming into this thread complaining then. I won’t ever be forgetting about this.

whatever happened to “don’t give out any real information about yourself on the internet”

Can someone from California request what their personal info from Persona is being used for so we can know more about how much they are sharing personal information with third parties? The privacy doesn’t seem bad although it would be nice to know what especially the Affiliates section means

(From the Persona’s “Privacy Policy for Persona Identity Verification” page)
There is a similar section for Australia but I am not sure how much Australia’s law requires to disclose

https://devforum.roblox.com/t/an-open-letter-to-roblox-on-safety-and-id-verification/4035744/29?u=tjw123456 (Disclaimer: I don’t have a background in this type of speak, so there’s a good chance my interpretations could be wrong)

I can’t wait to see all the trouble roblox gets into if they actually go through with this, no sane person is going to give roblox their face. 30 days is far too long and AI is objectively terrible at estimates.

Honestly hope to gosh that this update pushes some of the more (sometimes outragously) privacy focussed countries like australia to outright ban the platform so that it hurts roblox in a way that they would not be able to recover from other than undoing the change.

whoever incharge decided this should’ve been fired.

Literally all you people had to at MOST do is maybe lock chatting behind email verification and just improve your damn moderation systems. I know alot of it is up to microsoft with Community Sift to make their system better, but even then there ARE tools in place to customize the moderation AND you have the ability to actually GET GOOD HUMAN MODERATORS instead of outsourcing 99% of everything to AI. this is a multibillion dollar company, for crying out loud.

in the end, if you are to go through this dumbbuttery, atleast bring back safe chat, minus the obviously terrible inclusions like age.

so, as per roblox’s press release, every user who verifies under this method will be put into any of the following groups:

  • Under 9
  • 9-12
  • 13-15
  • 16-17
  • 18-20
  • or 21+

the bit about this that feels absolutely abhorrent to me is the fact that anyone inside one group cannot communicate with anyone in any other groups. do you know how stagnated this will make things feel? what about real life friends that gravitate around a 5-year age bias? what about groups of siblings and their friends of friends?

and according to the same link, this will be rolled out in 2 weeks. which i think is absolutely awful.
in my original post, i said that no platform i know of actually requires an age verification for their users to communicate, which is an inheritly basic thing. but this? this is something else.

this change will ruin virtually every single experience on this platform. it doesn’t matter if its social. it doesn’t matter if it’s singleplayer. literally every single experience is going to feel the deafening silence that this will create. i dont know why the article keeps blabbing on about some ‘gold standard’ because all i can see is everything burning. get a grip.

Saying like 3454353rd times, We need resign david baszucki, matt kaufman at EVERYTHING costs.

this is a note to everyone reading - this person does not represent my views

no offense but i don’t think you actually read the article

my examples directly after this addressed crossfire not pointed out in that exact excerpt. i read the article

This is massively going to screw up the events I host in my game. I have a gymnastics game, and every month we have a friendly competition with standardized scoring. How will I be able to tell users younger than me their scores, or instruct them where to go to compete?

I’m all for user safety, but this will mess up a lot of games that rely on co-op communication.

I gotta ask something about the “age check for chat” thing. So let’s say [in the future, not now] i am 18 and i have a friend that’s 17 years old [again i am not 18 yet, i am speaking for the future when it happens]. So how will this work for in-game chat? Like when we say something in the chat [not privately, just in the chat like normal], will it just not appear for the other person? Or will it still appear but heavily filtered?

Based on what Kreek posted, no in-game chat either.

So basically it will just. not show up for the other person?
