The future of immersive communication on Roblox

Yeah of course, maybe like 2 percent of people will use it. But why are they focusing on such an invasive and frankly unneeded feature when there’s so many other things they could add. UI blur when??

Also imagine getting like a collab offer and having to say "do you have RobloxApp  "

Couldn’t agree more. Before the platform splinters apart due to fractured effort put in the wrong places, the engine & developer needs should be met first. It’s only this year that Roblox finally decided to focus on fixing the thousands of now-dusty bug reports, and it’s nowhere near sufficiently polished still IMO.

I got called in the middle of a gameplay and accepted it! I like it so far but I think there should be a warning that gameplay would be interrupted once you accept a call
Also I think it’d be beneficial to add some sort of outfit changer where you can show your friends outfits you made without having to rejoin.
Edit: you can spam call friends and they get bombarded with notifications unless they unfriend you which is not pleasant.

Yeah but dont you think its useless? There’s discord, whatsapp, snapchat and all that, why would we need this? Roblox was created for gameplay, not to call people, they already added voicechat thats all we need

This update sounds like a total nightmare.
Roblox should NOT try to be a telecommunications company.

If this is the direction they’re headed then I can’t do much about it either ways. Like it or dislike it, it’s what they’re envisioning and what they’re going for.

Are you some kind of industry plant or something?
Also while roblox may not be intended as a kids game, a large chunk of the playerbase are kids, along with alot of games being primarily targeted at kids.
there are alot of kids on roblox and adding stuff like calling could genuinely pose really bad issues with grooming

listen i love roblox and i think this is entirely to appeal to investors and other weird people and i don’t think that this is good for the platform, adding the “realistic” avatars, which kinda scare me a little bit is another example of something roblox doesn’t need and i don’t see how these features are gonna help. i feel like the aesthetic roblox had is going away and it’s becoming something it should’ve never been. roblox’s entire identity that made roblox so incredibly successful is being striped away with updates like this. i, as a developer and player really do care alot about this platform so i don’t think we should be going in this direction

Agreed. The only Iconic and unique thing everyone will remember about roblox is the blocky characters, and now they are basically removing it slowly with these weird looking realistic characters which literally dont fit with the games style at all.

I genuinely cannot see how this update would be useful to anybody. This update just doesn’t seem like the kind of feature that we would see necessary, I mean we already have the fairly newly added Voice-Chat feature and I’m sure many developers would much rather stick to that than add extra modules and extra lines of code just to give the players the ability to voice-call in-game when it can already be done through Third-Party apps.

Disappointing to say the least, Roblox.

This was completely unnecessary!
Instead of fixing all the moderation issues Roblox is working on new useless features that almost no one will use. Instead of adding useless features add more features and tools to Studio such as UI blur or something that will actually help us as developers.

FWIW, there are different teams working on different features, so for the doomposters who are worried that these social features are affecting the progress of other areas of the platform, it isn’t really. There may be bleed over due to required technology but it’s not like the entirety of the company focuses on one feature/area at a time. That’d be counterproductive.

That being said, while I decently respect the reasons for why all these social features are being pushed out, it almost feels like developers who’ve curated and fostered their own methods of communication and player-player engagement are being alienated for this idealistic outlook of how socialisation and avatars should work on Roblox, and it’s a bit scary. Roblox is abandoning a lot of what really made people come to this platform and quickly sterilising its identity in this way.

Roblox reinvents too many wheels to try and become a megaplatform for everything, and then almost forces developers to subscribe to their vision by nearly, if not outright, forcing site-wide adoption of features that, by design, should be optional or non-integral to the platform (e.g. whereas improving SignalBehavior is important, camera and calling features are not, and that’s why we have phones and other apps such as Zoom and FaceTime).

2023 has been a good year for Roblox except for - mainly - the product/marketing, avatar and moderation teams, in my opinion. To their credit, moderation has been improving their pipelines, but not so much their communication. It’s way too easy to get frustrated with the decisions by these teams that seem pretty tone-deaf (or at least, it’s not clearly identifiable where the market and audience for these features is, and I don’t want to blanket assume it’s investors) and lack two-way respect, especially when optionality (opting in or out or preserving legacy choices) is becoming rarer for these types of features. Avatar team in fact almost seems antagonistic towards legacy avatars.

interesting concept, but it’s not close to Roblox’s nature. I don’t think it represents it at all, nor would I find a use for it…, sorry Roblox. I don’t like this update, it’s unnatural for a platform like this.

Just one small problem…

The Roblox voicechat system’s moderation is very flawed as mine has been glitch banned for over a year, lots of people have experienced false bans and revoking of rights so how on earth would this be useful to anyone? Especially those affected by false bans like me.

I have no idea why it lets me enable voice chat, shows up the rules popup but doesn’t even work at all. On the other hand, I feel like this feature just isn’t needed if proximity voicechat already exists, along with off platform services.

Really cool! Can’t wait to see how this will look like in the future. I think there should be a feature to toggle something similar to Do not Disturb though, something that mutes calls or something to toggle it off/on, as the feature is already getting abused.

I’d rather use other platforms that don’t use 1984 censorship systems. If I wanted to communicate with my friends, I would use other platforms that can actually have proper communication without me being listened into.

bruh… not all new features are bad, the social ones are though. I am not making a “big fuss” about anything, how are you telling me:

:skull: bro, you DO NOT decide whether I reply to you or not. The best you can do is block me, but you initiated this conversation so don’t expect me to be passive about it.

What the hell are you talking about here?

Also, this is a horrible line of reasoning. It’s about the allocation of resources as well as, even if I personally dont use it, others will and it’ll create an environment which Roblox cannot control. They have mediocre moderation in the first place, how would they moderate video calls? The fact that Roblox is actively releasing features like this is predatory and shows to be investor bait and to distract players and developers alike from the ongoing issue of the state of Roblox. By adding these social features, Roblox attempts to divert attention from issues which have been left uncovered. P.S why are you speaking like that lol

Who will use this disgusting thing? Roblox There are many things that developers want if your ideas go ask the developers

the time spent making this feature could have been spent improving moderation or Roblox servers. a lot of responses stated that they dislike this feature and probably wont use it.
