Thoughts on current progress w/ build showcase?

Mostly as a way of exploring and educating myself on different types of architecture, I’ve finally decided to start to make a showcase of sorts. I’m going for a semi-realistic style with the structures while maintaining a cartoon-ish look and a more vintage ambiance with lighting. It’s going to focus on a single street, being a mostly vertical layout for now (eventually ill spread it out horizontally.)

I’ve placed text around the current build to inform on where roads will lead possibly and inquiring if sensible, along with inquiry on what to do with certain areas. (Refer to Notes: Bullet 1 for more information on the roads/ sidewalks.)

I’m mostly looking for help with how to lay out things, along with what buildings to make that’d fit a certain style. One thing that is definite is that I want to avoid modern styles that arose in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Critique on plans, lighting, layout and current buildings is wanted. Please do not post comments that are solely flattery.

Notes
  • Currently the roads and sidewalks are messy, so ill need to redo them. I’m aware that they dont meet up properly at spots (due to messing up increments while building)

  • The current music is mostly temporary, will be replacing soon (sorry, it gets really grating after a while.) If you have audio that you could recommend that is uploaded by roblox which is APM that would be greatly appreciated

  • Light posts and trees will probably be replaced in the final stages, simply all there as placeholders. Also, I’m aware of the floating trees.

  • Terrain is going to fixed up later, currently its p messy.

Your building style is quite exquisite. Your builds are detailed, accurate and have a realistic feel/touch to them. The inside of the pink church could be a bit more detailed as it feels too spaced out and empty.

This one is most likely my favorite building out of them all, I find the roofs really fascinating.

Keep up the great job!

Good build, but I’d consider the following:

  • A better road texture. The current one does not fit well with the more realistic (albeit well-textured) pavement.
  • 3D manholes. The decal used looks odd, unattractive, and overlarge. Image enclosed below from one of my own builds as an example.
  • Church: needs rounded steps. It could use a better interior ceiling pattern (not a different ceiling style, but just something on the ceiling to begin with, such as a brick pattern), and it is very empty inside.
  • The empty, black house interiors look unappealing and could be hidden with curtains, blinds, or false interiors. The driveways also look somewhat odd since they lead onto the pavement, and not the main road. Image below.
  • The canopy (image below) comprises wedges and should be hollow. Although its current state may fit your theme, I do not believe it looks good as the rest of the place still suggests some form of light-hearted realism, and the canopy should be no different.
  • I do not believe the neon used on the cart looks particularly good, especially in daytime.
  • The bottom of your bay windows on the green building are empty. Image below.
  • On the ivy-coated terrace of the church, I’d recommend experimenting with real ivy made of meshes. This is just an afterthought.
  • The terrain near the church is very dishevelled and if it were more flat (on a diagonal) then it would look much more appealing and realistic. After all, one can’t exactly mow grass that looks like it’s out of a jungle, lol. Landscaping is a big thing in cities.

I have checked out the game/place. So from what I have seen, I think it looks lovely. The details and the effort is good. I can not wait to see more of the project. (Gave it a :+1: )

Standing on the roof where spawned and panning round I noticed a building floating in the sky.
I went to check it out and found an underground area.
Perhaps you should consider making an edge to your the area in your showcase.
Some buildings appear to have no roof.
Most is good its a polish I felt was missing.
It is presented as a showcase after all.

@Somnar Thank you once again for the insightful input
I definitely agree with every point made, already made some quick changes to certain things such as the neon on the trolley, fixing up the terrain finally, and more. I didn’t think about how nicely landscaped towns and cities are, will definitely keep that in mind. Will be replacing the manhole soon. I’ve been bothered by the slapped on driveways I put on the houses, but unsure of a solution to have them evenly flow into the road. Perhaps basic triangles drawn with the polystudio plugin?

The church inside was pretty much rushed by me in a hurry to just show something and get feedback, will definitely rework the interior at a later point, as my mind has drifted other places on what I want to do first before I forget about those ideas and lose motivation.

@RamJoT I think it can be implied by the nature of the post and the state of the build is that its heavily WIP, but presentable enough as an idea. Some buildings I put no roof just because from the players limited camera they’d never be able to tell for now, but something will be done about that. Of course some polish will be missing currently… I’ll worry about fine-tuning that in final steps. Also I still have no idea about the completely shape of the town, so that’s the reason for no boundaries (still, given it’s heavily WIP); perhaps I forgot to provide enough information in the OP…
