Toggle/Genre to Support Non-Monetized Educational Experiences

(Topic made as a continuation of Ability to disable Roblox Premium payouts with new ideas for supporting Non-Monetized experiences)

As a Roblox developer, it is currently too hard to create non-monetized and/or educational experiences with no way to disable Engagement-Based Payouts.

This limits the potential of Non-Commercial/Educational assets that Roblox Developers can use and open-source content for education.

If this issue is addressed, Roblox Developers will be able to create non-monetized educational experiences, with the ability to include more content in their experience.

How could this be done?

To support non-monetized experiences, Roblox could create a genre that disables any form of monetization in your experience (including Engagement-Based Payouts): Education Non-Commercial, Educational, or Non-Commercial

If an educational experience is monetized, it would be listed as Education Commercial

If not a genre, there could be a “toggle” in the Creator Dashboard disabling monetization features:

Additionally, the ability for experiences to mark their genre as “Educational” would promote and support educational experiences on Roblox.

Note: this would allow for not only non-monetized educational experiences but for any experience to be non-monetized.

For anyone following this topic, what would be the best way to support Non-Monetized experiences?

According to the language of the license, non commercial use is defined as, “not primarily intended for or directed towards commercial advantage or monetary compensation.”

Does this wording seem a little vague to you? That’s the point. According to the Creative Commons wiki, “the definition of NonCommercial is intentionally flexible; the definition is specific enough to make its intended operation and reach clear, but versatile enough to cover a wide variety of use cases.”

It depends on the license, but for some like CC NC you can still use the asset, you probably just need to not accept the monetary compensation. Edit: One source the Creative Commons points to defines things that “earn the users money” as commercial, so that seems to include even if the money isn’t used.

It would definitely be a nice feature to simplify and guarantee things.

That is only with permission from the creator for commercial use. Premium Payouts make all assets in all Roblox experiences for commercial use, as these payouts of Robux are representative of real currency. This makes it hard to use Non-Commercial assets on Roblox, as it’s hard to reach out for permission to use these assets for commercial use. The same is true with content available for Non-Commercial educational purposes, which makes it harder for me to use more contemporary and non-public-domain assets in my educational experiences (with Premium Payouts).

Yes, it would make it easier to use Non-Commercial assets from places like the Thingiverse, without having to worry about what assets you can use in your game.

It would also be interesting if Creative Commons licenses could be added to different experiences and Creator Marketplace assets, making it easier for developers to find assets that they can ensure permission to use.
