Upcoming Changes to Avatar Catalog Upload Requirements

No. As far back as I can remember, Roblox automatically takes items off sale when you lose your membership.

This update will massacre small clothing designers. Small clothing designers don’t get hundreds of sales a piece. Besides, the already existing clothing bots will only be slowed because they already have plenty of robux stashed into their groups, so it wouldn’t really stop them.

I’m not the biggest fan of this update at all. Here’s why:

Firstly, I’d like to say that the amount of time Roblox took to address spam clothing is extremely upsetting. Furthermore, by allowing non-premium users to upload clothing, it’s giving users the chance to bot the catalog even more, similar to what @DecodedMint suggested.

Second, as a small clothing designer, I see the struggle other designers face when trying to get exposure on the catalog. Charging creators :robux:100 to upload clothing is somewhat absurd since a lot of creators wont make the money back in sales. Additionally, Roblox takes about 30% marketplaces fees, which leaves creators which little to nothing if they sell clothing for :robux:5. Even myself, with premium and reduced marketplace fees make little to nothing per clothing sale. How can you expect users to pay :robux:100 and pay for advertisements to get exposure? This seems like a complete money grab.

Roblox should focus on clearing up the current catalog mess before releasing an update like this so that small designers have a chance to promote their clothing without the fear of having their clothing lost in a catalog full of copied clothing.

If the fee was like :robux:25, similar to group ranks then maybe I’d support an update like this? But I don’t see myself supporting a system that is going to punish small designers and inspire more users to bot.

I completely agree. Small clothing designers are somewhat punished by this update because it’ll cause them to raise the price of their clothing to make back the Robux they spent on the upload free. By raising the price, it’ll be unappealing because who wants to pay :robux:25-50 for a shirt or pants? And on the botting topic, it’ll only encourage non-premium users to start botting the catalog. While it may slow down botting, it’s giving more users the chance to bot.

I just want to suggest something that Roblox can possibly do apart from this.

Reasons:

Because first off,
the whole point most people pay for premium is to make shirts and make a lot of them. If you make the price for making the clothing like :robux:100, they would at least put the price at 50 :robux: and get 3 or more purchases to even break even. You can also put it at 5 :robux: but you would need 20 sales to break even which is hard for really small clothing designers. This may seem like a really small number, but who is going to buy 50 Robux clothing? People will normally just find the cheapest (:robux:5) clothes and for the people who make clothing for a living, and who are small clothing designers, this isn’t hard. Plus adding :robux: to make clothes won’t stop the :robot: problem, since :robot: will sometimes already have exploited :robux: like how they get premium sometimes. Nor will it stop the people who get a lot of :robux: from copied clothing.

My Suggestion:

I think we can do something like an automated verification process to check through the catalog for clothes that look the same since making clothes take a long time to be accepted anyway. So if you add an automated system, it will go through the catalog and find the ones that look the same. If there isn’t any then it can be uploaded. If there is a “clone” then it will not upload and It will be denied, or if the bot is not sure whether it is a copy or not, the bot will notify staff at :roblox: to manually review it with the once that look the same side by side.

Very good idea for you to be able to test the design within studio before publishing however I do have a few issues with this.

  • Due to the fact I am small developer, I don’t even think I’ll be able to get close to this ‘fee’ so I won’t make a profit.
  • I wanted to make a wide range of merchandise, things like ’ I survived the …’ . Really cheesy products that you see in gift shops. I know for a fact these won’t get many sales and that’s what is putting me off.

I completely understand why you are doing this from one glance in the store. I just hope this DOES discourage people who are more likely to spam and for my sake the sale price isn’t too high.

I haven’t been able to sweep through all the posts in the thread, has it been clearly stated whether or not Premium members have to pay the fee too?

While I can see how it affects the entire platform, I can agree with @blushclips that designers get impacted the most. Yes, prices are most likely going to increase due to the new fee, but you have to realize that some designers spend hours to create clothing. Making a long story short, designers aren’t getting compensated for the amount of time they put into the piece they make.

Could somebody explain to me why people dislike this?

You pay 100 Robux to upload your design to a nearly bot-free system, wouldn’t this also improve discoverability for designers too?

Bots have large amounts of robux usually from scamming so they will by-pass this easily, and most people can’t afford to pay 100 robux to upload one shirt.

Say if someone wanted to upload 10 shirts. It would cost them 1k robux, and would probably take them months depending on how well known they are, to get back what they’ve spent.

You claimed a “nearly bot-free system.” Yes, the new system may decrease the amount of bots but nothing was ever mentioned about purging the current copied catalog. Unless Roblox is going to remove every copied clothing piece in the catalog, this update does nothing but make it harder for designers to get exposure and make a profit.

The entry barrier for designers has been raised, which now limits the actual amount of designers that can enter the market.

If you’re already paying for premium, you’ll get a minimum of 4 shirt uploads per month. That’s a low number but there’s still nothing stopping you from spreading your name around.

Also it can sometimes cost an arm and a leg to get games out there too with commissions and advertising, but that doesn’t seem to stop new developers who are passionate about their work.

Thank you for the clarification about how it affects Premium members.

I agree with your sentiment at the end, but the profit margins for original clothing are a lot slimmer than profit margins for games. It’s not necessarily a really crazy comparison but the two are still different.

The new upload requirement actively discourages me from uploading clothes.

Developers that create games also don’t need to pay :robux:100 per game published and aren’t limited to 4 game publishes per month (if they have premium). I don’t see your point.

I really like that non-premium users can upload clothing now, however, 100R$ is quite a lot for many people. If you think about it, a shirt and pants upload for a small user would cost 200R$! Now, for bigger games 10R$ is less than pocket change; for your average premium user, that could potentially be half their monthly Robux! I really love that Roblox is really trying to prevent catalog spam, but I think this is not quite the best solution.

having to pay a fee generates more money for roblox in the long run. Personally, I have never experienced clothing theft, but I see a lot of it.

I completely agree. I put effort into the clothing I make, and I don’t feel it’s fair to sell for 5 robux, but I have to in order to get any sales, if I get sales.

If I like glothing I will pay more then 1k bux

That’s awesome that you’re willing to spend more than :robux:1k+, but sadly not everyone is going to want to.
