I legit forgot that this existed, I used it in some admin game that I made when I was like 9, never used it again
They’re only removing the ability to make commissions off gears sold on your game page. Gears will still show up in the catalog and be able to be bought that way.
Honestly, I don’t really care that this is being removed, I’ve never used it and never will use it.
Why not add a helpful feature like changing the name of a group?
Well, this doesn’t come as a surprise. It was a novel idea back then, but it’s rare nowadays to see anybody using it.
I feel ok that this feature is going to be removed as it was practically an unused feature. Us developers most likely knew that this was going to be removed sooner or later, in my perspective, I’m fine with this. Sponsoring your own games is technically like sponsoring your own gear, so it will really cause no difference unless some developers used this feature all the time which I highly doubt but other than that, I was expecting that feature to be removed sooner or later.
me waiting for gears to get deprecated entirely and get relegated to purely aesthetic objects
Regarding PlayerOwnsAsset: I was under the impression that this would fail since private inventories exist now, or can it still reliably check if a player owns a specific asset? I’ve been directly using the endpoint instead of any Roblox service events since that gave me the information I needed… probably would’ve helped if I tested the function first though.
Will have to refactor a certain system of mine in that case.
Sad. I can tell this is part of Roblox’s long and slow transition to becoming a platform and not a game. I wouldn’t be surprised if gears get removed in the future.
This is great. I always taught this feature was “odd” for Roblox. Especially since player could sell gamepasses which would churn out more of a profit than selling Roblox’s gears.
I honestly just think gears should be reworked. The periastrons were a step in the right direction, but after that nothing was really updated. Gears have potential, but they need to be recreated.
Developer Products tend to have their effect be directly coded into the game. The reason that this way of selling Developer Products wouldn’t work the same way as gamepass sales, is because a gamepass is an asset you buy ownership of. A Developer Product isn’t an asset that gets owned, meaning the game couldn’t tell how many Developer Products you bought.
I’d prefer to see the space saved for other features instead.
Devproduct purchases don’t function in the same way that gamepasses/gear do. They wouldn’t be compatible with the website.
most gears are broken and just being used as accessories and I rarely find games with that option so that’s epic
My only question with gears is whether or not they will continue to be supported at all. Most of them are broken as they are still not compatible with FilteringEnabled, and often have terrible hit detection or input lag. Almost no games use them.
I would probably permit some gear usage if I could whitelist or blacklist certain gears for/from use in my games. The current filtering methods are pitiful, with very generalized and many times incorrect categories.
Good change. Nobody used it anyways, so it’s better to remove it.
Aww man, I don’t know (or will never know) how to script. Damn!
Anyway, this will be missed by some people, but we all understand why.
Just remove gear entirely. It’s not that hard.
They probably won’t, considering that people still kind of use em for admin games and stuff, the only reason they probably would remove them is because no one really buys them and gears gained a lot of attraction because of skateboards.
I think the only purpose of gears nowadays are basically for your profile avatar render. I do hope they don’t get removed but repurposed or something
I don’t really use it, it was kind of the past so yeah, most people make their own gear in-game. So it should not bother anyone if Roblox deleted that feature.
Gear isnt used anymore as we can just create our own gear with modeling and scripting at minimum. and game sponsored gear is bad. so i am glad to hear that
