[Update] Changes to Asset Privacy for Audio

Worse, every new audio regardless of length or whether it’s a sound effect–despite the benefit of them being private under the new system by default–can’t be manually made public right now.
I still stand by my belief that the upload limits are a secret incentive for users to get ID verified and to use Roblox’s (and Monstercat’s and Pro Sound Effects’) audio.

Roblox has edited the page to confirm that those permissions cannot be revoked once granted. :disappointed:

EDIT: Deleted original post cause I replied to the wrong person.

Edit 2: Archiving I believe would make it unusable in any experience, but I am unsure if whether the granted permissions will be saved if you restore an archived asset (which they say is possible).

It’s been 2 months since all new audios are forced private, and we have had zero word on this.

So far the only things that have come out of this update is: nothing. The audio search is still as broken as always, even noticeably worse now because even if you specifically search for something like “water (sfx)” you’ll get content that has neither of those words in, and isn’t even sfx.

Funny how you guys love to constantly push out untested and extremely unwanted updates, seemingly having all the time and money in the world to spend on them, yet when it comes time to provide support or fixes after said broken update it’s immediately all “oopsie poopsie we’re reeeally sowwy! we have only 2 people at roblox and have no monies! bye bye we never talk again now!” only to dump out some other deformed abomination of a rush job update that everyone is going to seethe at for the third time in a month like poor code grows on trees.

I just want a fixed maximum worst case scenario deadline for when we can make audios public again. I don’t even care how long it takes, because I know it’s going to be a year minimum if ever.
(I mean look at PA/Regular here on the devforum. Over a year and a half now since that was removed and we’ve literally heard zilch outside of a singular post just sarcastically saying “Soon”)

To be honest, I’m gonna have to agree with a lot of developers. I wish we could request Roblox to upload sound effects that are not inappropriate instead of having spam loads of audio that we don’t want. Besides The audio of discovery in the toolbox is broken. And I wanna know when is a time we can make audios public again. It’s been 2 months since Audios were forced to be private. When are we going to make audios public again?

The main “plus” about this update you guys pushed was supposed to be Roblox uploaded SFX, but the search feature in the library has been broken for some time now, making this task basically impossible.

This one right here seems pretty critical and unrelated to any possible legal matter, right?

coming back to this thread two months later and seeing people still respond to it is a tad bit comedic

ive changed some of my viewpoints on this subject and its slightly less negative than what I had before

but man some of these theories are just getting wacky

this one I found the most wild

its still fun to protest against it, but we all know nothing is going to change
but I praise the effort made by all the people in this thread to speak about their opinions and what they want changed for this update

hopefully admins are still paying attention to this thread as it is still active, and maybe we have the slight chance of getting some stuff changed for the better

I doubt Roblox themselves will set audio to public but if they did, my suggestion is they should only do it to audio that was previously being distributed on the marketplace (as long as those assets don’t fail copyright re-checks), that way the privacy of audio that was off sale the whole time can still be controlled by the uploaders of those assets. Something that does not make sense to me is it appears the process of manually changing audio from private to public will be irreversible (not necessarily the marketplace distribution toggle but the process of allowing all games to use the asset).

You want the developers to use music that comes from your audio library… After trying to use your audio library, I realized that many songs were not in full version (like we only have excerpts 30 to 60 seconds). I liked the fact that the interface has been updated in the studio but the music is still really poor quality (according to my research, the audio may not be so bad…).
I came across songs thanks to this new feature :

But I realized that these songs were not in full version…

So I wanted to look for the song in full version on the marketplace and the surprise!

Impossible to find the original version!

I am extremely disappointed! I thought there was some pretty cool music and then you realize there aren’t full versions for a number of songs. I don’t know if the problem comes from the search system or if the audio is non-existent…

I hope it will be improved soon because for the moment the audio library is really not terrible (Afterwards it’s only my opinion, if you have found your happiness it’s great)

If there are any errors in English, I apologize in advance. The text was made with google translation.

So not only are we still left in the dark about public assets, but the search has gone to hell and they won’t even acknowledge that. I’m speechless.

I have to agree. Can’t Roblox fix the search discovery for audio so that the audio update can be improved. Because I don’t wanna be stuck with a broken search filter on audio.

Make sure the game has the permissions to use the audio, the client loads audios only when you’re the uploader of said audio.

Apparently the client only can load audios that you uploaded, but everyone else won’t be able to load them beacuse the game doesn’t have the permissions to use those audios despite of the audio owner.
Either Studio or Roblox Client, both of them won’t give an inmediate hint for lack of permissions on the audio uploader’s side.
This becomes a huge issue when you’re reusing the same audios for different games that you own or the group owns, forcing you to manually go to the roblox site in order to set the permissions one by one.
Not even a single “[ ACTION NEEDED ]” is shown on the Studio’s output to get the audio permissions faster, making this more of an inconvinience.

Am I crazy or is the audio asset search system actually tracking what I search and changing search results based off of it? I’ve searched different keywords for other sounds, but see sounds from previous searches come up (searched for plane SFX, got vocals/scream SFX mixed in with the other randomness from the plane search). Either the service prioritizes top/popular sounds, or an algorithm is trying to build a profile of sounds that may be ‘relevant’ to my game based on previous searches.

It also appears that some sound searches get censored, I see genuinely no reason to censor search queries that only the inputter can view - the website wide blanket-censor should seriously be revamped to only work for user > user / server > user interactions.

This way, the censoring system would no longer be a worry to casual searchers or developers desperately trying to find assets, and the only possible problem would be developers uploading illicit descriptions/names (a hard-censor that only blocks common swears/derogatory terms could combat this, most developers don’t want to upload things in poor-taste anyway because of how it could compromise their main account).

It’s a bit unfortunate how incapable the current search engine is at finding assets, at this point I think Studio should just have a separate system entirely. The one on the site has always been useless for anything other than exact user searches (which can still get censored, making Google the better option), and has only been dumbed down over the years with the effective removal of game genres.

2 months later, and man this still holds true it looks like. I’m limited to 10 audio uploads per month just because I don’t have an ID, and I don’t know how to get one. This actually hurts as I’m just one person who likes to make games, I’m not part of nor have a big team, this change has just made stuff harder for me.

Maybe top developers could be fine with this update. But small developers are in danger because of the update. Even developers are making less money because they had to remove boomboxes because of this update.

They should definitely implement an enhanced copyright claim system like what YouTube has.

I personally find it funny that that wasn’t what Roblox asked them to do. Instead they suggested adding a list of Roblox owned audio, however I guess some developers believed they would not be able to make that change within the hard timeframe.

To me the worst about this update is how Roblox is treating smaller developers again. As long as those huge games which generate most of Roblox’ income are fine (which they ofc are) they won’t care about the effects anymore, as we see here. It has been 2 months of radio silence and not that this isn’t common for Roblox, but it still doesn’t mean it is okay to not let us know anything at all. I’m doing so much more effort to develop quality stuff instead of just moving to another engine where I’d probably do less work for better results. This is very sad that such attitude is true again for Roblox.

It’s been 2 months since this update was forced and yet, no response. I guess we’re stuck with a broken search filter for audio. I can’t believe they rushed this update. They should have tested this update first.

I thought under 6 seconds audios are allowed to be public but nothing is allowed to be public I guess.
