Update to Roblox Licensing Program & Brand Guidelines

If thats in violation of your contract couldnt you sue?

Like @Heimskeet said, shouldn’t you be able to sue if they just abandoned your contract? I understand that you may not be able to from a practical standpoint given your position as a developer (roblox could end your right to devex etc) , but in any case, isn’t that illegal? You’re not the only person I’ve seen not be paid out for participation in the program

Only field and environments are safe to bloadcast in ADs, isn’t it?

Who does this update benefit? That’s what I’m genuinely curious about. Who were you thinking of before this update was pushed? Your mainstream playerbase? Your top developers? How does this new update entice anyone to advertise their game off of Roblox?

At this point, it’d be less of a hassle to not advertise your game on other websites at all. At least then you wouldn’t have to worry about violating these new guidelines.

Additionally, what’s with the Rthro push (again)? Your team can barely make them function to begin with. They don’t display well in R6 games, old Accessories and Gear don’t work with them, and the backlash against them is still going on to this day, five years after they were first revealed at RDC back in 2017. How many developers push games that support them? I guarantee you, the number is a lot less than you think, with more developers choosing not to have Rthro in their games.

Trust me, if developers wanted that, they would take their projects and ideas, and move them off of Roblox, and onto other websites.

This was in #development-discussion

This “badge” your RECOMMENDED TO USE isn’t mandatory, which means you dont have to use it. Its for commercial purposes only, like your games or clothing youve made on roblox. Its only for offsite purposes.

The badge is the one that has roblox icon

You can still use r6/r15 in your youtube thumbnails IF ITS NOT AN FULL ADVERTISEMENT.
Advertisement and content are different.

Roblox ADing in Youtube right now.

The toys (stars) program is gone

Out of serial code, isn’t it?
…Only robux code exists in real life right now.

Ro-Citizens and Blox-Fruits are not gonna be removed because, as stated in the original topic, it started the day of the update.

If that’s not copied by faker.

So many people don’t understand legaleese which is making this a hard update to understand, and many of you are blowing up with excuses for roblox pushing RTHRO which isn’t even close to what this update is doing. Also, RTHRO is R15, so please, stop being ignorant.

This update is tightening their Intellectual Properties and copyright in a time where many things become more blurred daily. We’ve just experienced one of roblox’s major IP violations of all time with the collective music industry suing Roblox.

Roblox is not erasing R6/R15, however, it’s not their business model anymore. They’re focused on new things and leaving these avatar styles to their community for UGC. It’s not totally a bad thing.

This isn’t me disagreeing with their tightening use of “blox” or “ro” as they do not own the trademarks for the prefix “ro” or the suffix “blox” in gaming (Also, yes, roblox owns the trademark to Despacito Spider.)

I do find a major flaw with them doing this on the platform, but what can we do? :person_shrugging:

I want to know where this came from. Because, no developer is the problem here. It’s Roblox. Everything is tied to your platform so you can squeeze money from their users. Decoupling literally means that Roblox makes less money so, this whole sentence doesn’t make sense.

If anything, people want to leave the Roblox brand for individuality rather than being marginalized as the “same game different textures”.

This does nothing for developers. It actually does more for Roblox. Instead of being a tilted square with a hole, you’re now forcing everyone to append “On Roblox” to gain more users. Which again makes you more money in the long run.

Translation: We’re pushing RThro because it’s the future so, if we get new users, they’ll be here because they’ll appreciate RThro more.

If RThro was good, people would’ve adopted it and you wouldn’t have to push it. Also, let’s be real here, R6 is a Minecraft character with a lego head. R15 is basically the same with break points for more movement on limbs. Y’all act like this is some new, long awaited concept that birthed a new era on this planet.

Hiding that as a “getting a grip on our IP” is such a bland argument at this point. The only people using this are the people bringing an audience on your platform. Everywhere else, no one cares.

This is actually somewhat good. These twisted naming puns were so bad. Not seeing them again is great.

Translation: It was cool using your brand to bring more players to Roblox. Unfortunately, these products haven’t done so well but, we still have the players we got from you so, “lol, best of luck on your own brand, we’re losing money”.

This whole post is basically corporate greed. If I was a star creator or a brand on this platform, I’d be pissed. Both are now stuck here and y’all milked them dry. And then, casted them aside.

This is what happens when you’re a public company. Users no longer matter. Your community no longer matters. It’s “how do we make them happy and make us the maximum amount of money”. That’s what the metaverse is. It’s not a connection of people. It’s a “how do we monetize every aspect of life”. Roblox took it a step further “how do we monetize every aspect of being a kid”.

In hindsight, this is pretty unacceptable. This whole post is trying to hide the fact that this is “good for creators” when it really isn’t. There’s nothing in here that is good for creators. Everything in here is a marketing ploy to retain the same level of users y’all had during Covid.

It’s really sad that you’re trying to lie to these kids.

RThro is not R15. It can be a derivative of R15 but, is not in whole to R15. This pretty clear when you try to incorporate it into any aspect of work. This is a push to RThro. R6 and R15 make Roblox look like a kids site and so, they’re pushing to modernize the platform and their image everywhere else. It’s a common marketing tactic. Ignorance here is you.

As much as the naming change makes little sense, it is satisfying that people will finally have to put a bit more creativity in their names and stop adding “-blox” to the end of everything.

As for R6, other than nostalgia, I don’t really see any good reason for new work to use it since the rig is so basic and limiting. Yes, R15 requires more complex animations, but with the use of IK, barely so. Unless you’re trying to make a simulator in a day, the extra animation work won’t be significant.

This is completely apalling. This was the straw that broke the camel’s back for me. Im so unbelievably done with this platform.

All you guys do is meat ride the investors, and then proceed to give the players minimal say. This is why your stock is doing poorly.

Yes. it is a common marketing tactic for them to push modern content, like any company. I mean, have you seen Activision-Blizzard pushing Overwatch one content lately?

However, the rig is literally based off of the R15 bone scheme. It quite frankly, is R15. I’m not suggesting it should be synonymous because It’s definitely a different product, but it is a subset of R15, like any other package on the catalog. I’m quite content with roblox pushing out the old parts of the platform. A lot of it is legacy and has very little use cases. To call me ignorant while I’m only pushing what is blatantly there and digging more in depth is quite a stretch. Unlike many who comment on this thread, I actually understand why and how they’ve moved, and don’t hide behind rose-tinted glasses that I have from 10 years ago.

This is very interesting, I wonder what else Roblox will do in the future?

I mean, it’s doing poorly for financial reasons and because the market as a whole is getting more conservative, but that too.

The stock is down because the whole market is down. There's a media sensationalized war going on with severe economic impact, among other factors. Don't drag meaningless stock bickering into this, it dilutes real feedback.

I agree, thank you for bringing this up. As an avid investor who follows the market daily, I find it funny that people on the Devforum and on YouTube believe every negatively received update has a direct impact on the stock price of Roblox. Investors are not engaged in the platform listening to essentially inconsequential updates and complaints from developers and players, instead they are leaning on key metrics such as financials, profitability, and projections. The market in general is doing poorly (due to Covid, Ukraine, Inflation, etc…).

It is true that Roblox is more volatile than more stable companies, but in general it is tracking with the market. That isn’t to say Roblox’s decisions never impact their market cap. If these decisions impact Roblox on a more broad scale (player/ revenue loss) then their stock will be negatively effected as investors evaluate the value of the company and their potential for long term success. But as you said, these updates are not directly impacting Roblox’s stock price, they only have the potential to indirectly impact them in the future.

I’ve updated my post, pointing out the vague & blocking areas of the ToS changes. Roblox needs to update the ToS to be more clear!

I’ve also updated the post with another problem these changes bring up that I hadn’t initially considered:

You say that like you don’t realize why devs do it. It’s not for lack of creativity. I can create dozens of names in a minute to describe any game that exists, the point of using roblox-themed names is your trying to give the game a Roblox theme, as some people like that. Also, they are not getting rid of the old rigs; they just want to market the new ones more because they haven’t received the reception they hoped for.

Honestly the more I look into these changes the more unnecessary they seem. I can’t put into words how some of these changes put a sour taste in my mouth. Weren’t some of these changes attempted in the past, but were reverted due to community backlash? Why is another attempt being made?

I’m just so confused behind the motive of these changes, obviously it’s Roblox trying to “Modernise” but I can’t seem to figure out any other reason. Especially the sunsetting of the Developer Stars Program, which makes no sense in my head.

Is this a joke?
Ok maybe I understand a little the logo & badge thing, but now we can’t use R6 and R15 avatars anymore? What? Have you guys lost your minds or something?

There’s no way I am using Rthro, have a nice day.
