Web Advertisements Showing Incorrect Click Counts

Describe the bug. Describe what is happening when the bug occurs. Describe what you would normally expect to occur.

Essentially, my advertisement is getting more clicks than mathematically possible, unless someone is using bots to click it or something. See screenshots.

As you can see, the impressions only increased by about 750 between 9:55 and 9:59 whereas the clicks increased by over 2’200.

Between 9:59 and 10:09, there was about 1’400 impressions, and nearly 5’000 clicks.

Now that’s an effective ad.

In the morning (I ran it the night before, so this is after about 12 hours of running), the ad had about a 0.5% CTR. It was a new one we were testing, it wasn’t doing great.

It was in a span of maybe two or three hours that it shot up to 30% CTR after getting more clicks than impressions.

I know these numbers are incorrect because:

  • It wouldn’t make sense for an ad to jump from 0.5% to 30%
  • I’ve never even heard of a 30% CTR ad
  • The player count did not represent this boost at all

How often does the bug happen (Everytime/sometimes/rarely)?
This is the first time I’ve ever seen this happen, so, rarely.
