Funny I was actually just going to experiment with Flowfields after seeing a unity video on it , is it only viable for 2D you think? Most examples I’ve seen are in two dimensions since it’s typically used for RTS games but I’d be curious to see practical 3D examples too - if it’s not too slow.
How fast is recalculating the heatmap when the goal changes?
Flowfields would probably work fine in 3D, you’d just need a heightmap so that units can lookup what height they should be at. (Planet Coaster uses flowfields in 3D and has a good article that explains exactly what they did)
for my use case, recalculating the flowfield is pretty fast because the space I’m using it on is pretty small, flowfields would probably be too slow to be viable for larger spaces.
Currently, there isn’t much to test, as much of the game is reliant on Golubian making his combat system and such. However, if you want I can update you on the progress of the game.
