What's your experience with Avatar Appearance Override?

Some games such as wild revolvers and many others force the player to wear pre-determined clothes in game, which they can upgrade in the future. I am wondering if this feature can deter players from a game as they may want to play as their own character.

I’d love to hear your experience with this and ways of executing it well. I tried appearance override in the past and didn’t get many plays, however that may have been because of the game itself.

Personally I would make this feature a option to buy “Skins” Which I have in my game (Quiz) Which you have seen before, this uses the CharacterAppearanceId Property in the Player, but you can easily do this by removing all the players hats + changing their pants + shirt AssetId and adding your selected hats (This is a easier way) Or you can just do it the hard way, but more reliable way (I forgot the way to do it, but surely you could think of one haha)

It’s pretty necessary in some games, mostly gun games like Wild Revolvers. Catalog accessories can become obstacles and may even give away your position if they stick out and clip through walls. I don’t think players are too bothered by having to wear a game-set appearance as long as it serves any discernible purpose in gameplay (like how cops must wear uniforms and prisoners must wear jumpsuits in Jailbreak).

On a related note, a moral tip for developers, making custom appearances just to force players to buy their own appearance is just cruel and pointless.

No because,

  1. I WANT players to wear these skins as default as it makes them fit in with the game’s specific style
  2. I don’t want my game to be a cash grab, I have a lot of respect for games like jailbreak who’s monetization is fairly discrete and doesn’t seem like a huge disadvantage if you haven’t got it

Use the character.Added event then? And then you can change the avatar up

Yeah makes sense. Especially seeing the number of bacon hairs out there, I don’t think many users would mind having a different appearance. And actually some might even play the game more if they have good in game clothes compared to their usual bacon self.

This is a design support question, not scripting support.

On topic, it really depends. My issue with a lot of games that change my character is that they give me no form of customization. I don’t mind my character being customized in ways like Jailbreak/Prison Life, since it serves a purpose and isn’t too much of a change from what I wear on the site.

In terms of heavy overriding (aka completely changing their outfit), I think it’s important to remember that people like customizing their characters. I don’t mind what Q-Clash is doing, where it has several (nice looking) characters to choose from, as it:

  • Serves a purpose
  • Has a ranging style of characters
  • Look really, really nice

I don’t have any experience with customizing characters as a developer, but those are my thoughts as a player.

Ok thanks, I feel character customisation is a must then.

Which is quite cool as my game can have clothes shops and new clothes can feature in updates.

In some cases I would make everyone look the same at first and then you can wear Accessories that you bought with earned money by playing the game or buying in game money.

Booga Booga is a great example for this

In a RP game however A Character Editor is crucial IMO.

Character appearance can be used in many ways, but I think the best way is to always give them an option if it can be provided.

Funny enough I sat down with my niece and taught him how to play Roblox the other day. We joined a game that override his character’s outfit which he didn’t seem to like since he designed a character that he thought look cool. Made me think that younger users will react the same way. Personally as an older individual, I don’t really care how my character looks in-game. If I play with my own character or a premade one specific for that game makes no difference to me, but I can definitely see younger users reacting negatively to not having their characters.

But of course it also depends on what kind of a game you are working on. If it is a team vs team game then adding outfits for the various teams can make it easier to distinguish who is who.

All in all, I think that if you target a younger and less serious audience, go with player characters. If you are aiming for something a bit more serious, go with premade characters.

If anything makes me absolutely hate a game it is when I have to pay in-game currency for a hat that I already own on-site to wear it there.

I personally like it more when everyone either has their own character, or everyone looks the same but for minor details (skin/shirt/pants/hair colours).

I don’t like it when games make you look bad, and then want you to pay in order to look better.

Thanks for the advice. There definitely seems to be a trend depending on age. As my game is aimed towards an older audience I think I will go with the override.

My game follows a western theme and at the start I plan to have character customisation with different hats, clothes and hair. Clothes will not be costly or money grabbing and there will be a large range of good looking starter clothes to choose from.

That gave me an idea for an excellent monetization strategy! Basically the game scans your inventory and only display items you own then try to sell the items to you a second time in-game. That way you can pay to look like yourself.

I never touch Roblox’s character loading system, it’s just too tempermental
It causes a massive amount of lag when you call :LoadCharacter, which is game ruining.
I don’t know if this behaviour will replicate with Avatar Appearance though.

Joking aside, I hate the extremely popular trend of taking your avatar and selling it back to you.

Is this an actual thing? I don’t really go in-game but I was just imagining “what is the most stupid way to monetize this?”, and thus my post above was born.
