After seeing Colbert’s post on why people reply with “Hope this helps”, check it out here.
I see this among loads of New Members , about a month or two in, and was wondering what this pattern was and just why? If you do this please explain why, this really just confuses me like you don’t go on Twitter and say “Dear Person, [Insert Body here]. Best Regards, Person2”.
Yes this is an omega brain-fart but please explain why you do this!
While I strongly disagree with the notion, it may be due to the implication that the DevForums has an “email esk etiquette”, until the FAQ was updated it had a line about not signing your posts, the meta forums FAQ still contain that line.
Don’t sign your posts — every post has your profile information attached to it.
Sometimes, I do end some of my PA replies with a simple thanks or other basic message. Although never here on the main sections.
It might also be one of the differences between a forum and a chat where chats tend to be interactive with the two parties online at the same time where a forum is more timed apart almost like email or like instant message compared with texting.
I will only ever sign off a post if its for the Post Approval inbox because I prefer to be more formal, direct and interactive with the members rather than make them feel like they’re speaking to robots and even then I don’t put my clearly-visible name, just a well-wish.
After writing that stupid thread of mine, I’ve gradually been trying to come to terms with the fact that people are going to adopt different habits when posting to the DevForum and these kinds of small things shouldn’t bother me when it’s as simple as ignoring it. Yes, people are going to post it - just saw a Post Approval member do it some hours ago.
When you stop worrying about the small things that gray your hair, you feel good about dropping a bunch of weights off your back. Different users are coming to the DevForum with a different perspective of what they believe is appropriate to reply with and everyone is, in some way, wanting to be of help to others as well as be here to learn.
A signature is probably reminiscent of the old forums where users would sign off on posts and signatures are usually present on a lot of forum software. The dynamic of the forums probably gives the impression that signing off would be a good way to end a post.
I just wish more developers would read our information threads before posting!
In my mind Twitter is throw-away communication. It’s like slapping a note on the outside of a moving bus. A tweet was supposed to be an extremely wise and prophetic burp in the wind. Obviously others feel the same (see “old tweet” scandals). Although tweets are indeed forever, forums feel more permanent… like sending an email. Response on forums isn’t immediate. When you make a forum post there is a feeling it’s being sent somewhere and processed by magic elves in a sweatshop just like email. That’s why I make these social errors at least.
I used Twitter as an example of what I sometimes see, I see what you mean (a more psychological thing is what i’m getting atleast). Well thanks for the reply .
