Workclock Headphones Mesh

Really? That’s quite cool! Were any other items found that had this too?

Its a shame because there are reports that I’ve made a year ago that still haven’t gotten fixed and some of them have only gotten attention because other people have re-reported the same bugs that I reported. I really want items with genuine issues to be fixed

I believe the reason everyone is upset is because mesh/textures issues in classic items or older items aren’t necessarily a bother to most of the people who own them, that’s my personal understanding of the backlash.

I do respect this a lot but I must say i feel like artist intent should not be the most important thing here when it comes to now very iconic items with faults that are now part of what makes them unique and iconic, and with some items (clearly not in this case but) for other old items artist intent may also be taken for a bug or flaw by people who were not around for the creation of these items. For instance as i mentioned earlier the classic top hat series has a very iconic odd shading which makes them unique and without this iconic shading nowadays I do not believe these would hold anywhere near as much demand as they do nowadays regardless of what the artists intent was, essentially screwing over people who paid a lot for these items in the present day because we all got used to the way these items have been for as long as we can all remember.

Roblox staff simply hate you. No further information will be disclosed at this time.

Given the historical context you provided here, I definitely agree that the update to Workclock Headphones was a good one in this instance. I really feel that looking to preserve the look of the items at the time of release is the best thing Roblox can do when deciding whether or not to make these updates.

That being said, I think Roblox should take a look at setting specific guidelines to follow to make sure that items are being updated in a way that follows this general principal, as to not make changes that stray from the original appearance of an item.

I appreciate you calling me out on this, I also agree that some of the stuff said in this thread went a little far and I’m hoping next time things can be more civil. Looking back on what I said I was basically just nitpicking, I just thought that CW and WC should at least be consistent considering they’re basically inverted counterparts. Regardless, the item’s been reverted, and if anything, the black lines in the preview add to the charm of the item.

The showcase of what both headphones look like in the old lighting is also really cool, you can actually see the shine on WC, which is basically impossible to see in today’s lighting.

Personally i think it’s cool that they tried to replicate it’s old look. The only reason i got upset at the change was because everyone already got very used to the “Clay” look. Especially considering when the workclock set came out (mid 2014) the model already didn’t render like that.
Also just wanted to point out that i don’t agree with anyone who attacked the OP, we need to share our opnions without arguing even if we don’t agree.

I strongly agree with this statement; The mass hate was definitely unwarranted. However, I think it would still be very professional if an official statement could be provided to justify the actions taken and ensure a policy will be created to prevent this from happening again in the future. Possibly, when a report is filed for a classic accessory, the team could wait a couple of days to gauge the community’s response before taking action. Reports in this category can be subjective to some degree, so it’s important to wait for others to express their opinions (especially, those who actually own the item). This just gives me flashbacks to the Timeless Valkyrie Helm situation which wasn’t handled well. The criticism needs to be formally addressed, so the report can be respectfully closed and locked. No staff response is just a bad look.

There’s some hats with similar issues, but I’m not sure how many have this specific issue. The edge of the right earcup is ever so slightly outside the boundaries of the texture. Not something you’d notice unless you took a much closer look, and it’s possible the 3D modeling software used to make this hat rendered the hole as more black pixels, hiding the problem from the modeler!

Personally think it depends from hat to hat, and issue to issue. The soft shading on the classic Banded Top Hats is such an important part to why people love them. Something like the CWHP’s right earcup mark? Judging by the UV map pics above, I’d call it unintentional, and a flaw which goes against the WCHP’s clean style.

It isn’t always as one sided as the Banded Top Hats though. With something like the Pirate Captain’s Hat, it was sold for around five years with a transparent feather, before changes to Roblox’s rendering made it appear like a sketch on a piece of paper. Fix it or not, there’s going to be a lot of people complaining either way, but I think the artist’s intent tips the scale in favor of fixing the problem after so long.

Now I don’t know the details going on behind the scenes, but I’m sure everyone involved in the recent item fixes are working in good faith. They’ve taken up a pretty hefty job, one with a lot of people ready to grab their pitchforks if they don’t like how it’s done, and they’re doing what they can to try to make those people happy. Give them some room to think, and I’m sure they’ll get better at approaching problems like this.

And I don’t blame people for thinking this is the right way to compare two similar items! The z-fighting comparison has been around for ages, but I think it misses out on a lot of important questions to ask yourself. How big is the difference? Is the difference big enough to notice from a reasonable distance? If this changes something more drastic, will that break any outfits built around this item?

And that’s another one of those tricky issues. It’s a little hard to read, but if we go back to a Wayback Machine archive of the WCHP when they originally released, the headband ends up looking softer than the original CWHP’s did when they released.

The question then becomes whether we follow artist’s intent as a pair of inverted CWHP, or original release and bevel the headband to get similar shading to how these looked in 2014. I’d personally go sharp, but I can see why some people would prefer the smoother look, especially with the shading being more noticeable on solid white.

yeah its people like you who go out of their way to complain about the tiniest thing ever to ruin things for everyone thanks bro! (got reverted thankfully)

If Roblox ever fixes the pirate hat to use SurfaceAppearance, someone could just sell the standalone “feather” as a UGC hat “add-on” that you can combine with the hat, if anyone really wanted to restore the previous look that badly, so I don’t think fixing it would be too disastrous.

But to be fair, for most of its existence it has had a broken feather, so a lot of people might not even be aware that it was meant to look different.

The only real problem is that the fixed version wouldn’t work in R6, because R6 avatars can’t load MeshPart accessories.

These classics are historic items and for years users have made them part of their Roblox identity / style / brand and have been accustomed to these items as they are, flaws and all.

Although I am certain the change requests and updates for these particular accessories have been made with good intentions (in improving them). Personally I agree with some others here that really these items should no longer be modified. (Exception for extreme cases such as item not functioning or rendering etc…)

They are a part of Roblox’s history and deserve to be preserved as they are including their flaws and imperfections.

Maybe someone could make a thread about preserving historic accessories? Could spark an interesting discussion.

Thanks

Hello there,

I am glad to say that this change has been reverted.

I would also like to clarify that I wasn’t the one who modeled the new version and had no intentions of ruining the classic accessory.

Sincerely,
@eveninghike

If the update looked like this it would be really good, its just roblox ruined the icon and flatout did the easiest most cheesiest replacement that could have been thought out
Someone needs to re run this but ensure an image like that and the icon is similar if done, an advanced update that ensures the smoothness can happen without the confrontation
at the end of the day roblox butchered it, i remember when it looked like that and honestly it looks amazing

Nobody making these reports is out to ruin? Mistakes in items by asking staff to fix them. Some of us are just perfectionist who like items to be perfect. I’m sure the guy who made this report wasn’t sitting there sniveling as he made this report like it was some evil plan . He found a bug and reported it. If you want to complain about Roblox, go ahead but don’t go after some random guy who made a bug report

Hey folks, responding on behalf of the team. Please remember to stay respectful and on-topic when you reply to bug reports. We do not tolerate harassing community members, including our staff. Those posts have been removed.

Thanks to the majority of you that left respectful feedback that didn’t target the OP or our staff. This is the best way to reach the right solution together, as seen here. The change has been reverted according to your feedback.

With these item change requests, sometimes it’s hard to determine what the right action is to take. In this specific case we acknowledge that it’s better to leave the item as-is as it is not widely available anymore and some folks might have nostalgia about the item or bought it specifically because of the way it looks. We also acknowledge your feedback on undesirable changes to the perspective of the 2D thumbnail of the item.

We’ll talk internally about how to best handle potentially controversial change requests to items in the future. Thank you all for your swift feedback here so that we could quickly remediate it.

Roblox at its best is Roblox when it’s being honest and open with the community. Lots of people will appreciate this response, thank you!

Personally, I disagree with the idea of classic items not getting fixed or improved just because of “nostalgia”. Other than the thumbnail being wrong it wasnt a major change and people harassing this guy and the staff should rethink life. I think the mesh should be changed to be like how it was when it first released and the seams should also be fixed.
