[Action Needed] Upcoming Changes to Asset Privacy for Audio

Just… why?

Wouldn’t it make far more sense to simply keep all audios public, and then let developers choose to whether or not to make their specific audios public? There are plenty of audios that have been uploaded by inactive or banned accounts, so if this update gets pushed out, those audios get locked and privated with no hope of ever using them again.

It makes far more sense for ALL old audios to be public by default. And if any developer wants to make theirs private, they can do so themselves. That way audios that were intended for public use won’t be locked because of an inactive dev, and likewise developers who want to private their audios still have the choice.

To say that I’m appalled would be an understatement

No. Just no. You can’t be serious. This can’t be real.

It’s terrifying that they expect to push a change like this without the incredible amount of backlash. I’ve never seen a post blow up quite like this before. So little regard for their developers, it truly shows where their priorities lie.

Wow, incredible! Now I just have to reupload every song I used in my game over the course of months because I only have access to 10 uploads per month! No flaws in this system whatsoever. Definitely.

This is pathetic and extremely worrying. Ten sound effects per month?! Does Roblox even know what it takes to develop a game?

Since I could not edit my prior reply

To my and perhaps other’s dismay, some of the classic Roblox songs have long been removed. This includes Better Off Alone, Opened Way, some of RobloSam’s uploaded content and even Egg Hunt 2013’s Music. :pensive: The others that had not been removed have an X next to them, meaning that they can no longer be used in the future of Roblox going forward.

Yeah, there’s definitely something wrong with the moderation. I can upload audio to my account perfectly fine, but it blocks everything I upload to my group that my game is owned by. I don’t know what the heck is happening, but it’s really annoying that I can’t even upload a six second audio of pretty much static noises.

Congrats, you’ve ruined the roblox SFX/Composer’s buiseness and community.

This means lots of our client will stop getting work from us and will go ask other people. Very good.

Most of the roblox devs will be happy about this update, being able to find fitting sound effects and uploading them for free because we already had an hard time finding work, gathering people to work with as nobody actually think about us.
I believe I can speak on the behalf of a handful of composer and SFX designer that I do not agree with this. It is and will completly ruin our buiseness.

I already know a handful of composer who lost their contracts and jobs because of this, and it released only a few hours ago.
Point has been proven many times.

That being said, congrats to all roblox devs who got access to high quality free sound effects, I suppose.

Have a nice day everyone.

This is ridiculous.

Dear Roblox team, when your stock market, and company in general crashes, this is completely on you. You continue to pull extremely terrible, and non-thought-out updates and ideas such as this.

Putting developers responsible for something they did not upload is one of the most unfathomably stupid ideas I have seen in a long time. You have angered many here, and I can guarantee that this will further destabilize your system as a whole.

There are developers that have hundreds if not thousands of audios in store of their games that they have to review and rescript certain queues.

If you can give me a single paragraph reason on why this is an actual good idea that doesn’t ignore every single issue pointed out, then do so. This update is complete stupidity on a number of levels.

Signed,

VERY MAD DEVELOPERS.

I can’t put in to words at how ridiculously bad this decision is.

There are so many developers that are going to be completely messed over beacuse of this change. From inactive developers, experiences with hundreds if not thousands of audios, small developers trying to make a name for themselves or just big developers who regularly use free audio to enhance the quality of their game.

How can you expect people to go in and replace every single audio in a large amount of games?? It would take me approximately 500 days to reupload all the audio i use for my games, which isn’t a lot, compared to some other developers out there who certainly have it worse then I do.

It would be absolutely nonsensical at this point to be able to push this kind of update with this amount of backlash.

I really hope something changes here. This is not good at all.

To reiterate my original post, why should I dedicate any of my time to making games on the platform if everything I’ve ever done can be completely destroyed (harsh wording but fits) like this the very next day because Roblox decides to push yet another platform-wide change like this that requires me to go back through every game I’ve ever made and compensate for the change individually?

I’ve lost count of how many updates there’ve been expecting us to make up for some completely random, unnecessary change like this that has massive consequences for the entire platform. I will give the Roblox team the credit that they’ve been putting in a lot of effort lately and have realized the issues present in many updates through listening to the community and going about them differently but it doesn’t seem like they’re going to budge easily on this.

Again, who asked for this? Where was the need for this change in any capacity? The copyright system had already taken care of 99% of problematic audios and was strict as is. Uploaders already had the ability to prevent their audios from being used in games if they so desired.

I just don’t understand. This isn’t the first time in any capacity that Roblox has made game-breaking updates like this and expected developers to go back through every single game they’ve ever made and compensate for the change manually and individually. It’s utterly ridiculous and I just don’t understand how these changes keep coming like this.

To add, I would also once again like to say that the Roblox licensed audio catalog is terrible and doesn’t fit my needs in any capacity. In fact, there’ve been hundreds of times where I actually wish I could filter out the Roblox licensed audio as it was more crammed with terrible spam that got in the way of any actual audios that I needed. This is not enough to compensate for this change whatsoever.

Plus, what about developers who no longer actively work on their games? What about uploaders who are no longer active on the platform as a whole? What about me? Am I actually, seriously expected to go through every single game and audio I own and fix them one-by-one?

Making audios free does not soften this blow in any capacity.

there would probably be more anti-bypassed audio scripts to reduce the amount of bypassed audios in games.

This update might just be the end to most developer’s career.

Sure, the audio upload limitations might have been changed for the better, but the policy change means that more and more developers would have lost their freedom to create experiences for the general audience on the platform. The limitations as to what you can upload as official audio such as Sound effects, In-game/Background music, will further drag away the possibilities that developers used to be able to have. As many experiences uses custom audios which they find on the internet or made by their own experiences and softwares, this policy update might also push the player base of experiences down as many players would discover that the audios being used are licensed to Roblox and will be repetitively used across most experiences available right now.

Through this, this was generally a not-well planned update. Developers are outraged by this and hopefully something can be done to ensure that this update is reverted and future updates are well though of about before being released without any prior notice. As to the copyrighted audio removal notices, it would have been nicer if the automated message not only contained the ID that the audio was uploaded, but as well as the title.

The market of commissionary music artists is not closed. Through external chat services like Guilded or Discord, someone could commission you for an audio. You would still be composing music or soundtrack, but sharing it on a different platform so the recipient can upload it. Then, you get paid through the site.
I could be wrong, I’ve never composed or commissioned a composer but that doesn’t sound like too big of an impact, right?

Can Roblox PLEASE provide this BEFORE all the music and sounds are effectively eliminated from the platform? (March 22nd)

You are taking away our shared assets, but not providing us with replacements UNTIL everything is removed. These promised audios should have already been uploaded to Roblox before you made this post and change.

Furthermore, please disclose what gives some developers more uploads per month over others.

This is a very terrible idea.

Most of Roblox’s games will be dead silent and I’m not using the free audio Roblox and Monstercat are uploading.
I would rather have to pay for audio than have no audio at all.

No, random users seem to have an increased limit, being ID verified only increases your limit to 100/month.

What about for those who don’t want to give Roblox all of their personal information.

Are they REALLY this comfortable breaking multiple core aspects of Roblox in a single update?

An entire foundation of primordial Roblox was built upon the sole aspect of music. There are ancient games out there that’ll be further ruined to the point that they’re just silent shells of themselves. There’ll be hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of audio that’ll be unavailable due to a vast majority of them being on accounts that are no longer active. Not to mention said audio being re-uploaded by hundreds of people at this rate just to preserve use in their own games.

All of that just for free but limiting audio that isn’t even consistent? I think not. It’s a catastrophic update that’ll seal the deal in stifling the platform AND getting people to heavily reconsider development in the future.
