I am experiencing the issue where I can’t open “Material” picker because it’s disabled even though I have part selected. Also, I would love to see the “Color” picker that uses BrickColor being replaced with RGB wheel (with additional options for HEX, and HSV, as well as shape modes like “circle”, “triangle”, and the current rectangle one).

Yesss, finally! Testing out how different materials look from the dropdown has been such a nuisance, requiring two clicks and a scroll input to check out another material.
Actually, you could click the property and then scroll down with the cursor to select the next material in the list (see Watch annoying_material_dropdown | Streamable), but this simultaneously scrolls down the properties panel as well, making this an awkward method.

While we’re also talking about improvements to the color picker, might I suggest allowing the user to select different color spaces than RGB/HSV? One I’ve particularly got my eye on is Oklab, which allows you to pick different colors that have the same perceptual brightness, which is very useful for gradients (see this comparison of Oklab to HSV)

Hi everyone,

Unfortunately, we are disabling this beta for now to investigate technical issues. We apologize for the inconvenience and will keep you updated on when this is re-enabled. Thank you for your understanding and patience.

My beloved classic material picker, how I’ve missed you…

“The current plan is to have a forced decision that we will not discuss with developers about. We will randomly change these features without any feedback and shove it down your throat.”

Yep, I’d much rather prefer the dropdowns in the properties panel to remain untouched.

Oh my gosh, finally the old material manager is back!

Would you also consider the ability of using the old and new materials at the same time, ie by the old materials being a default material variant?

This is impossible - old materials use extra maps (NormalDetail) that MaterialVariant does not support.

What’s diffirence between this and just NormalMaps?

The classic materials use both. NormalDetail is additional texture detailing that gets tiled (I think randomly) on-top of the regular normal map. Without this map, materials such as Slate start to look very sad.

Would love to have discussions! That’s why we’re mentioning it to y’all now and not just building it and rolling it out, haha. Open to hear any feedback or thoughts on future directions for the Material Picker, thanks!

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your patience! We’ve re-enabled the beta for additional testing.

If you were experiencing an issue where the feature appeared disabled even after enabling the beta, please try the following to re-enable the feature:

  1. Disable the Material Picker beta.
  2. Restart Studio.
  3. Enable the Material Picker beta.

We’ve fixed the bug with the beta, so you should be able to try out the picker now!

For quick assigning materials with keyboard, the new Material Picker works with the custom shortcuts in File > Advanced > Customize Shortcuts…

Adding a binding here will allow you apply the material you have selected in the Material Picker with your keyboard
