Create Experiences for People 17 and Older on Roblox

Eh, doubt it. Don’t think they will create a VPN preventer just for this change. They ain’t Netflix lol.

This feels like a major regression, this definition is also very vague, what qualifies as gambling vs a lootbox, what about gambling games with no reward (yet normally would), what about awarding players for winning yet not requiring an entry fee, what about the Limited system as a whole encouraging users to purchase Limiteds is technically promoting gambling!

They have to take a live selfie during the process. But, also, nothing stops a parent from creating an account for their child and verifying it. But, at that point, it isn’t Roblox’s fault, it’s the parents’ choice to allow their <17 child to play in 17+ games since the account is in their name, verified with their ID and live selfie.

I believe that answers that.

I don’t have anything substantial to say anymore since it’s probably already been said by others, there’s already a lot of posts on this thread and I’m still taking in the information, but I’ll still share two thoughts of mine just so they appear. Probably will keep the rest to my developer circles.

  1. As someone who was on the forefront of correcting misinformation about the way Roblox handles gambling vs paid random virtual items and posted in most threads or had posts widely shared including off-site, I am doing my part by editing every single one of those posts to clear up Roblox’s new stance on also banning simulated gambling rather than only if it involved Robux.

  2. I am very excited to develop experiences for mature audiences. I’ve always felt that my creativity was geared more towards serious/dark topics and the audience I want are those who can understand the underlying messages or themes portrayed. I don’t expect to suddenly become a 17+ only developer, but I might be able to squeeze in some themes especially regarding a horror game that I dropped in 2014 because my vision for it was definitely not all-ages. No longer true.

To be honest with ya, we already have a lot of these types of games allowed on Roblox, so I think this update won’t really change anything except possibly making some games more restricted than others.

tbh this update isn’t that great

we’ll see a 99% decrease in players on our games (cough pet sim x) and eventually lose profit.

I’m not sure if this is a good or bad idea, but it’s always nice to see new age restrictions for Roblox, but I still think the platform is still made for kids, but over the years it has grown insanely in the number of players and that includes the ages as well, but I hope it doesn’t give some future problem about the age indication in a game.

Im in the same boat as you. I don’t know what to do at this point

“That doesn’t work very well in a platform like Roblox where the main audience is made out of children. Age verification is necessary.” Xbox, Steam, etc. all have a HUGE audience of <13 users, it’s just that parents register it for them. The parents and players should have control of what the younger players play, not the higherups of Roblox. Anyways, a lot of younger people play some pretty violent games (L4D2, TF2, COD, etc.). Hell, I play games like DooM, and plan on playing games like Wolfenstein The New Order (because it’s just a good game), and I’m 16. It’s perfectly fine for <17 people to play more violent games.

Forcing people to send government-issued IDs to a video game company to play games meant for a certain age demographic is a surefire way to destroy the engagement from that age demographic on your platform.

Ooooh my gaaaaaaaawddddddd!
Ahem, excuse my reaction.

I’ve waited FOREVER for this.

I’ve always wanted to go all out with gore, hide some dark jokes around my games and stop holding back my punches (no pun intended).

I’ve always felt so constrained with the PG-13 rules.
I generally just really enjoy grim, horror or dark themes but the rules have always limited the ways art can be made or expressed.

It feels good getting more freedom.
Unfortunately some people out there might abuse it, but that will always happen.

I’m just glad I have to worry less about walking on egg shells and questioning whether the thing I want to make is too violent or too dark or if my joke, meme or reference isn’t too inappropriate.

Thank you Roblox team, I am very grateful for this change.
And I’m sure others who love horror, shooters and dark themes also are.

how will it work if i set my game as 17+, i refuse to give my id to Roblox, so would that mean i cant play my own game?

I mean, I hate to double reply, but this is seriously something I would imagine the Chinese government doing. Is this Roblox or Luobu?

Internet/speech freedom does not relate to the type of games people play in any kind of way. The amount of the games that was banned in Turkey wouldnt pass the amount of the fingers a human has on one hand. I’m pretty much sure the internet law has a big role in this restriction like you have mentioned, though I do think that Roblox have just exxegerated the state of Turkey’s Internet laws and that it should be reviewed.

You can’t set your game as 17+ unless you’re verified and 17+ yourself.

Just got this:

The game is a water park game I made a year ago and don’t relay update it anymore. Just because it is a water park game does that mean it is for 17+ users?

Game Link:

(I got the message in my email)

Edit: I have also rated the game way before this update
