This is one of the best terrain updates since Smooth Terrain!
This feature looks beautiful and I will look forward to seeing it introduced in the near future. I am sure it will really enhance the terrain of the games and create a beautiful environment. It will also give me a great opportunity to return to my games, delete the mesh grass that has been placed out in the environment and so save on the total part count too. Well done to the Roblox team.
Could we have a height and width property? Tall grass would look truly cool in an MMORPG adventure game!
I’m unable to configure grass through script.
I really like the way this is going, but I hope for there to be more customization options in the future (so all games don’t look the same).
Like for example, custom grass textures (using a PNG file) that could be applied via using this system, adjust grass transparency levels, or the ability to adjust how long you wish for your grass to be. The ability to customize grass textures, however, would be an amazing addition to this system. By using custom grass textures, it gives the user the ability to decide:
-Whether or not they want their grass to be realistic or cartoony
-Whether or not they wish to add a gradient or more vivid colours to the grass
-Whether or not grass fits the style of their game
Overall, this is a really nice addition! It’ll help my games with lag by a ton, however, I hope for more customization options in the future (in order to achieve a personalized style with my games).
Grass is looking really cool, although it would be nice if we could have more properties to make it fit with the game/terrain, for example changing the height of the grass. Other than that very cool
Roblox is launching great stuff this year , and by the way, will roblox add trees to this system and add a function that will interact with the player?
I agree so much that I’m going to make a prototype for just that.
CloneTrooper said earlier in this thread that you cant Read or Write to this property. However, you can toggle it no and off in studio test mode.
This is amazing! Although, is there a way to increase the grass render distance? It feels so short on an open world…
Yes this is by design. The whole decoration system is planned to be way more powerful and global switch may not be needed in the future as you will have better way to control decoration (including grass). Because of that we don’t want you guys to rely on it in the scripts, so we can remove the global setting in the future.
Grass size/density etc:
I can’t promise that right now, but yes we want to provide more control over the grass size, density etc.
Wind:
Wind is not planned just as a feature for the grass, but it should come together with the complete weather simulation.
Interaction:
Yeah we definitely want to have grass reacting to the objects, bend when you walk on it etc.
Grass growing through parts:
I don’t think we are gonna provide automatic solution. However you can change underlying terrain material or in the future you should be able to paint or erase decoration layer.
I was not expecting this update, but it is definitely a great one that I will be using often!
Since I only want to grass aspect, I have the actual terrain underneath the grass material that I made. I think it turned out surprisingly well.
The ease of changing the grass color is also great since Christmas is coming up! Such nice timing for this type of update!
Tested the new grass out in a fantasy world, needless to say it works well and instantly improves your build.
When I saw this post I became literally like a 2 year old with 3 Buckets of Candy, I could not stop talking about it to my brother and friends. My brother had to tell me to stop because I was So excited. This will help me save a ton of Time on Games
This really boosts the visual quality to another level.
