we’re trying different options so to make things a bit more flexible we’ve disabled (as of now) 3d grass for leafy grass material - you can use it in places where you want good old 2d grass. let us know what you think!
There was a benefit to being able to use both the normal and leafy versions of the grass material for 3d grass that we quite liked, namely being able to color patches of grass differently by changing the material color separately for the two materials. Will we be able to do this in the future in some other way?
we’re still exploring how can we enhance it. some parameters will definitely be exposed to allow as much creativity as possible
Definitely a step in the right direction! The most important thing for me will be editing color / other properties with a brush and being able to edit these properties via code. Can’t wait to see what the team comes up with as an addition! Thanks for shipping by end of year!
Edit: Would love to know what you did to make a visually more complex shader faster.
Might be nice for a Swamp design.
I’d really like to be able to use this new grass material on parts instead of just terrain, the terrain system as it stands really limits how large I can build my driving environments but I don’t want to be left behind on these features that favor smaller worlds.

Are we able to add this grass on non-terain parts in the futures?
I’ve been wanting this feature for almost 3 years now, I’ve used laggy meshes and particle emitters, now I won’t have to, Thank you roblox team.

It would be nice if we could apply the grass effect to normal parts…
For instance:
Being able to select which side of a part the grass will appear on (top, bottom, left, right, front, back). I prefer triangle-part terrain over “Roblox terrain” (and so do a lot of developers).

Update: We have disabled geometric grass over leafy grass material. We are not 100% sure if it is gonna stay this way. We are experimenting around. Using leafy grass as no-geometry grass could work for you guys as work around for painting geometry grass. On the other hand maybe you want 2 different grass colors. Please let us know what do you think.
Yep, pretty amazing. I was waiting for this addition ever since I started playing on Roblox. Can’t wait for this to release in the ingame client!
Very happy with this update! There’s a lot of possibilities and detail you can do with it and I am excited about what is to come in the future.
This is an amazing update, but I would love to see more customization to fit different styles of games (which I assume will happen in the decoration system update).
