I don’t know where you think you’ve seen that, but (sadly) that has never been guaranteed as an option, and the latest announcement is the final nail in the coffin for the current materials unless we do something about it.
I hope they make 2 tabs for both the old and new material textures, the old texture tab being Legacy Materials while the newer ones are named Professional Materials. Might not sound like a good idea but I hope they could take that into consideration.
Edit: if they actually considered it then the pushing of the new materials would be even less of a bother
Yeah that is not going to happen old and current games are all forced to use the new textures.
Aw, so nice of you to give me PBR materials I won’t have any choice over when they are inevitably shoved down my throat… Most comments in the old thread were already unhappy with this, and It’s still being pushed?
i think it was in a reply to a comment since i can’t find it but remember reading it
Absolutely love the new wide range of materials, it feels like there’s much more depth & life in them.
the new textures do look good but they are a drastic change compared to the old textures and may ruin the aesthetic of many games. Instead there should be an option somewhere such as in the workspace properties to enable/disable this change. Old games should have the old textures by default however is you create a new game it should automatically use the new textures. Then is you like the new textures you can use them, and is you would rather have the old textures you can keep them.
So, what terrain material am i gonna use for scree and broken rock accumulations now? I normally use cobblestone for that, but now they made it look like pavement and ONLY pavement. No more scree, i guess. Now i’ll have to do some drastic changes to the design of my terrain that i’ve made after real life references and where scree was a defining feature of the landscape, because there won’t be anything to resemble it in the roblox material list anymore. Saying that the old cobblestone was similar to scree is a stretch, but it did the job. Talus is a very prominent characteristic of many mountain ranges, and if you’re going for realism you’ll have to keep that into account. We really need a scree material.
This was a much needed update, thanks.
If possible, can you add another variant of brick? Perhaps make the bricks a bit more bigger. Also, if possible, could you make snow have a glitter sorta thing when light is on the snow - makes it look a lot more realistic.
Lastly, it would be good to see both old and new materials coexist as developers don’t want their old games broken.
Other than that good job with the new materials.
I have a bit of a concern, will there be an option to still use old materials? Since there might some developers that’ll use prefer using the old materials or something.
I really fail to see how that is the case when not only do we already have SurfaceAppearance, but custom materials are coming soon-ish.
Do you understand the implications of this change being forced onto all places?
It was not “much needed” to destroy and unravel the gruelling hard work of this platform’s developers. Roblox would be nothing if it wasn’t for the people who work tirelessly on the experiences that make it what it is. To turn around and laugh in our faces, telling us it was all for nothing, and undoing our vision, is outright unacceptable.
This is LIMITING imagination, not powering it.
As things stand currently, no there won’t be.
Honestly, they should add a setting to use new or old materials. I’m just saying.
These textures are horrible. Why does grass look like chipboard?
Why does cobblestone have a baked in green texture? Anyone got a pressure washer?
This one needs to go back to the drawing board. “Worst update ever” is used too easily by most people, but single handedly ruining the aesthetic of millions of games really does qualify for such a title.
Yeah, it doesn’t look too good. They need to delay this update actually.
Well, I agree with you.
In fact, using new textures, I was able to create this on graphics 21. Some may even say it’s my best build ever.
Please read the announcement.
Yes my trash drawing, but you get the idea.
If anything, the staff at Roblox aren’t the ones to blame, but instead the people who don’t look at specs and buy a 2GB RAM iPhone 7 in 2021 “because it’s cool”, and those people who leave 500 Chrome tabs open. Roblox unfortunately has to accommodate those people, so it’s very unfortunate.
Also going to add something:
If you think Konekokitten is going to save us, I highly doubt it.
He’s shown support for new terrain textures in this video:
All I will say is that this update makes good builds look even better, and bad builds look worse. Although the newer grass and slate look incredibly out of place, I hope they will be altered. Besides that, I can appreciate the fresher look of some of the materials. I assume it is a matter of adaptation and getting used to it.
