Next Gen Studio - Preparing for Takeoff! [Beta]

The Next Gen UI is not a simple re-skin, it’s a whole new architecture. Read the previous thread and reply if you want to complain at least.

You sound like a child throwing a tantrum, just get used to it, is not that hard.

Regarding the other 6 out of 7 known issues, silence is still communication…
I do not think you guys should be putting this much pressure on yourselves to get this feature out with the looming concerns that others have added to this; I do not foresee how this, and all the other issues posted by others in which tickets have been internally filed will all be implemented before leaving Beta.

If you can pull it off, amazing. But don’t make such radical changes post-launch when folks use this software for a living and you have flipped the switch for everyone to use it.

The reason I like the old UI so much is because my laptop screen isn’t so big and you couldn’t resize Studio widgets below a certain size, so I put all my widgets (explorer, properties, toolbox, etc) on the right so I could have as much space as possible to view my game, even tho the new one is roughly the same size, look at how much space couldve been used for something OTHER than TABS

Old one:

New one

SOOOO much wasted space! The old explorer had the things I actually used often as the big elements, I think this is much better ui design

Also, the buttons feel way slower to select for some reason! Idk why but the old explorer just felt much better

Also also, look how much wasted space there is for plugins!

I could fit so much stuff on here in the old one

Overall I agree with Crazyblox, do NOT release this early, considering how much pushback you already have for the beta; it’s very unlikely you’re gonna fix all the issues in a few weeks (considering how slow fixes are being implemented at the current pace)

Honestly I think the best thing to do would be

  1. Drop the center align and bring back left align for the top elements
  2. Release each feature slowly, so we have time to acclimcate

looks like option to on/off is reverted in beta functions

I’d also prefer if they resized down the big ahh tab buttons to be the same size as the likes of the File and View tab buttons, so actual features can be more visible and usable when doing something fast

This is only while its in beta, once its released there is no choice

It seems like they are fixing those issues as the guy said in another comment. It was released a bit early though

I really like the idea of Custom Tags, and I think it’s a good step forward. However, I have some comments about the overall look of the new UI:

First, to me, the new UI looks really flat. The entire interface lacks hierarchy, and the colors don’t guide the user’s eye or indicate the priority of elements.

Second, the interface appears too large, elements take up more space than necessary.

Third, regarding the Windows version, it would be nice to see the menu bar merged with the title bar. It would save space and look better.

Here’s a quick example:

They’ve been doing both of these things. They’ve been slowly updating the studio beta and another team has been working on reworking the explorer. I believe the properties panel is next followed by a few other studio plugins.

In terms of left alignment for the top elements.
You can do that as well, I personally also prefer the left-alignment so that’s what I’ve got it set as.

Just for reading sake

Thats way better than what it is currently, Id say either they should use this or bring back what the current UI has

I mean moreso like adding the features from the beta into studio itself, eventually fully converting it. This would give people time to adjust and would probably help it be viewed more favorably

Well… If you aren’t in the studio beta then yeah once that’s out of beta you’ll be hit like a rock cause then at that point it’s functional and they’ve got the everything from the current studio recreated into the new studio (with the exception of Core Plugins). The Core Plugins such as Terrain Editor, Asset Manager, Toolbox, Properties, Etc will all most likely be released as individual beta features until they’ve sorted out all the bugs and issues before they get released into live studio.

Trying this out now…

Glad that the “Play” button no longer has that tiny arrow in the corner that you can easily misclick.

But this threw me off for a second. This has been “Play” for the last ~10 years. Totally not used to this suddenly saying “Test”, but I guess I can get used to it.

Tooltips are still buggy! Sometimes they won’t go away and will overlay other applications. I assume this is being worked on.

image

Also, sometimes they produce errors:

In “Manage Tabs”, when you click “Remove tab” or “Reset all tabs”, the confirmation dialog appears underneath “Manage Tabs”.

I don’t know if this is a bug with some of my plugins, but it appears that sometimes they will create an extra, blank toolbar, and this results in extra whitespace under the “Plugins” tab. This never happened with the old Studio layout.

This is probably more of an improvement than a bug, but with the old Studio layout, the only way to have a & symbol in a plugin toolbar button description was to type &&, otherwise it wouldn’t render at all. I don’t know if this was just a weird bug or what.

With Next Gen Studio, it actually renders correctly… resulting in two & symbols!

Plugin toolbar button names also don’t wrap around to the 2nd line anymore. Kinda wish there was a way to determine if a user had Next Gen Studio enabled or not so I could determine the best way to render plugin toolbar buttons for the user.

This might sound silly, but one big problem I have with Next Gen Studio is with the “Collaborate” button. I had this problem when the beta first released and I see that it still hasn’t changed, so I’ll mention this now.

This giant, glaring white button that constantly grabs my attention. It’s the only thing with a solid white background, so it’s incredibly easy to notice, and it feels out of place.

I almost never use the Collaborate button to begin with, and in the previous UI it’s easy for me to forget that it even exists because it actually blends in with the rest of the stuff up there. But now I can’t escape it.

Could it be made less distracting? Thanks.

I appreciate the team acknowledging the spacing concerns, but with the recent trend of Roblox pushing larger UI on us, such as the explorer beta, I am worried this may only be partially addressed by release.

For example, the plugins tab is consuming an absurd amount of horizontal space. Moon Animator, for example, uses ~180px in the current UI but about 350px in the new UI. This is nearly twice the used space despite actually having smaller images as well as the text cutting off since it somehow doesn’t have enough room. I can’t even fit all my plugins on one screen anymore while only using 3/4ths of it before.

Aside from the sizing, I like the direction the UI is headed and I am grateful for those working hard to make this happen, but with such a major feature being this worse off so far into production, I worry it’s partially intentional.

My only request is in the case these issues are not properly addressed by the time of release, please ensure we still have proper access to the old UI, even if we must enable “Legacy Studio Interface” through beta features, until we, the developers are happy with the changes.

For people that are angry cuz of the size of the topbar, meshpaul released a concept of a more compact version of the UI.

You’re absolutely right. For some reason, there still isn’t a button to collapse the top bar, which takes up 1/8th of my screen. This makes it unusable when making UIs and Scripts.

You can double click the topbar buttons “Home, Model, Avatar, etc” and it’ll do the collapsing stuff. I’m not sure why they haven’t added back a button.
