Have to agree on this one. I feel like some popular features of the old design have been left out in the new one in favor of custom tabs. Great example is device emulator. It’d be interesting to know how the team determined what they’d be transferring over from the old UI to the new one.
I think it’s better to have these more widely used features exposed and easily accessible rather than hiding them under custom tabs. Newer developers especially are going to probably not even be aware these features exist until they somehow come across this special dropdown or custom tabs.
My other primary concern is tooltips. Paul’s communication on this issue (and the entirety of progress surrounding this new UI) has been superb but we keep being promised it’s being looked into with no resolution. It cannot be that hard to fix. It is the most liked reply in this thread by far and there’s been just under 10 bug reports submitted on it. We need to see some action taken here.
But other than this, wow—Roblox developers are hard to impress. To those spamming “I hate this new look”, please actually try it for a few days before making a decision. It’s taken everyone some getting used to, as does any major change like this. Maybe you’ll grow to like it!
No, it is not technically feasible for any software application to maintain two versions of a program. I recommend getting used to it early before the old one is removed, so you have a chance to point out any issues you have to the team so they can be addressed.
Why does Roblox feel the need to touch and change everything?!!!
If it ain’t broke, DON’T fix it.
I for myself dislike this for many reasons, including (but not limited to):
~ I have been on studio for over 10 years, and my muscle memory has gotten so used to the normal buttons layout
~ I don’t like it
~ My hand eye coordination will now suffer trying to identify what was once very easy to identify
~ This new corporation inducing era of Roblox is heartbreaking, and the studio icons update a few years ago was bad enough… now this?!
I currently have an “outdated” studio tab open with the normal designs that I will never be closing for as long as I can. This is repulsive to me as someone who is already wanting to quit the platform.
I think, for a moment, whoever is pushing all these corporate ideas like changing the way things look, what things are called (like changing “Friends” to “Connections”) needs to CHILL OUT and instead everyone on the team needs to shift that focus on problems that developers actually have a fierce battle with. Things like exploiters and toxic players who can easily create alternatives to avoid being banned, more “community” controls for our groups being spammed, etc.
It’s not just a Roblox dev thing. It’s a problem with the mindset of today’s internet regarding any sort of visual change to the applications they use. You can see people whining and complaining for no reason about any redesign, from Discord to YouTube.
Most people will mix valid concerns with today’s applications with their personal distaste just because it’s new. Watch the same people who complain on this thread be happy after a few months.
I will put aside my personal feelings about the new studio UI for now, but I must ask if anyone else has experienced similar issues with playtesting seemingly causing the studio instance to freeze like this. Has happened twice in the last 10 minutes or so.
I am excited for custom tabs - that is a very welcome change.
My friend got it automatically. I had to teach him how to exit the beta and he said he was jump scared by UI when he was opening a new place. He not like new UI and some people not know how to disable
I think the new UI looks nice, however due to my time in Studio and being very used to the default UI, it’s going to be a lot harder to use as it’s mostly already how i like it, i really ask that this is something people have the option to opt-out of…
Man, they should have had a pop up if they wanted people to have it so bad. Similar style to the pop up that would appear if you were using legacy chat and you open place, and it would ask if you want to try the new UI instead of forcing.
For me, it’s not about ‘hating’ the new look, its more so the fact that it’s harder to use something you’ve used before so many times that has been rearranged, throws you out of order. This isn’t just a visual change, tabs will be different, buttons will be changed/renamed, things will be recategorized. I think the UI regarding looks is fine, but not so much the layout and where things have been placed… it’s not worth being forced to learn something that I could just optionally revert if they would give that option.
Yeah we are starting to think about how/what we can let community plugin developers do. Technically speaking, a lot of our features including the ribbon are now running as plugins. But we’ve also got to be careful as we are still running on the current plugin architecture which didn’t really consider how we are starting to use it.
We are going to first do a pass on compressing the spacing/padding and that’s going to significantly reduce the total space we’re taking up. We will do this before leaving Beta.
Second we are likely going to add an even more compact scheme as an option. We hope to do this before leaving Beta.
Beyond that, we are going to look into moving the Windows menus into the actual titlebar of the main window (similar to what VSCode does). This will not be before we leave Beta.
Realistically speaking the old layout wasn’t that good neither, it’s just that we got used to it. It was admittedly pretty cluttered and some items being in certain tabs made no sense.
If you want to be mad at something, be mad that they haven’t done this rework sooner!
