Are we allowed to use unions in our build?

Yep it doesn’t say we cant so I suppose we can!

We have to build The Ancient Forest Ravine and Builders that win the contest will receive a special sort on the games page so everyone can easily observe your creation! We will also be providing the winners with special blog posts alongside a video showcasing them and their creations!

Great! I was just asking since when using unions in builds they can sometimes be confused for meshes rather than unions.

Please, stop complaining about not being able to use other programs or Studio plugins. You don’t have to participate, and this is a challenge to showcase what Studio can do without the help of other programs. Also it’s called a “challenge”, which means that there’s gonna be some limitations. If we were allowed to use anything, it would be called “Builder Contest”.

However, can we get a Studio setting to lock stuff that is not allowed in the challenge? For example, it’ll lock the Toolbox, disable plugins, etc.

Good luck to all the builders participating in this challenge!

Does this mean you will be judging in studio, or while playing the game? Sorry if this seems like a dumb question.

This means that the game shouldn’t have any gameplay, it should just be the building of “The ancient ravine”, not “the amazing adventures of timmy in the ancient ravine.” It’s just saying that your game should only be building.

So wait… You mean you want us to use smooth plastic material since your talking about flat appearance right? Or does any materials work as long its on studio?

They need you! You will make sure only showcases with the finest of wood grain will win.

They’re asking you to only use built-in roblox materials, the decision of what material though is up to you and what you think adapts better to what you’re doing.

This is a good challenge, and I am a beginner at building, so this can be a good start to expand our ideas and also I think this will be a good challenge for me

But I have a question about the submission in August
dont mind to ask…

How are we going to submit our creations when August arrives?

They’ll most likely put out another DevForum post, or reply to this one with a form where you can then put the link to your creation.

it is sad to hear that external software like blender can’t be used in this contest, But i think if you have the mind of building something, no matter what Building software it is, it can turn out great.

This is definitely something I am looking forward to and I’m glad that they’re are doing these builder challenges to showcase the lesser known but yet very talented builders in this community. (Like back in 2007-08 I believe when events were just contests which leads us to see how the platform has evolved throughout the ages!)

However like most of the other developers I have some questions I’d like to ask because some things aren’t as clear as they should be in the post and I couldn’t find a satisfactory answer in the replies ( which I hope you do clear up in another post or at least in the replies below):

1: Can we use any music? Or at least music made by Roblox themselves? I’m aware we can’t use anything made off Studio, however music plays a big role in some showcases (because if we were honest ultimately we’re building a showcase) to truly immerse the player in the atmosphere which in this case is “The Ancient Forest Ravine”

2: Is there going to be a prize item involved? Don’t get me wrong because I myself am not going to try to enter just for a prize, but is really exposure enough?

I’m aware that there is also going to be a blog post and a feature sort, but we’ve seen in the past how this is still not enough, thanks to Live-Ops (which yes is a different situation, but still think is a valid example in this situation)

I’ll take the example of the Roblox’s Developer Relations international challenges.
In this situation a prize is given: Crown of Knowledge - Roblox
This will make the developers more interested in participating or at least getting involved into these challenges and trying out other’s creations to get some sort of inspiration. The winenr would feel acomplished because they got what they had worked hard for.

Obviously your goal might just be to showcase other lesser-known builders, and maybe in this case a prize wouldn’t be needed, but my point is a special sort, video and blog post, is it enough to gain attraction to other builders, which might not be convinced at what’s currently on stake for their builds? A prize would make the developer feel more accomplished in his creation, something which exposure can do, but not quite as much as a prize (in my opinion).

Once again, I’m very pleased to hear that this is happening, and I’m sure this is a right step for ROBLOX. I’m also happy that this is happening only using ROBLOX Studio, because I think it will help those who don’t use Blender, but still are exceptional builders. If only we had some more information to make it clearer :slightly_smiling_face:

Let’s get building!

I’m just wondering if this means while the game is running plugins/tools that are going to run ie. waterfall plugin cannot be present or just general plugins are not allowed at all. I can see how it would not be fair to use plugins that generate other user created items, but how about plugins that help to speed up workflow. Such plugins would include SBS, F3X, Atrazine’s Terrain v2, Brush Tool, etc. These plugins still keep assets original but also aid in speeding up and creating a more efficient workflow.

The quote “cannot require… to function” is much too vague. A function can be both post-final product or pre-final product. Some clarification and more detailed guidelines would be very helpful. I haven’t seen much actual discussion by Roblox Staff themselves so right now all I know is by hearsay. Considering this post has been up for 12 days as of me writing this, it is slightly disappointing.

There are also concerns about how you can approach judging how the creation was built and what was used. There could be false disqualifications especially if a person chooses to utilize Roblox’s own features such as exporting and importing as a mesh. Other concerns can be how to tell if a plugin was used or not used. If, as I said in my previous paragraph, plugins, in general, were completely not allowed how could you judge the usage of it? If they are allowed pre-final product then that question would be null.

Aside from my concerns, I’m happy Roblox is hosting this and I’d be glad to participate. However, with such arbitrary guidelines, I’m hesitant to even start in fear of wasted effort from accidentally breaking a rule since there is no clear outline.

I’m guessing that they’re not allowed since they are ultimately making a difference in the build and your relying on someone else’s creation, not your own.

I don’t think this is allowed either if you’re going to add a waterfall to your build. And the goal is to showcases your knowledge of Studio’s built-in features.

The only plugins I’m guessing you can use are those which don’t affect your builds e.g Words of Encouragement Plugin or the Advanced Camera Plugin which makes moving around in Studio easier, even though I might be wrong on the last one.

It would be good if they made a follow-up post to answers some of our questions.
