don’t use textures lol
And we cannot even reach that level with the current studio tools.
Exactly. Unions are a nightmare when you’re trying to make quality models. And even though this is meant to be low poly, this doesn’t change that. In my opinion, it’d actually be harder and more painstaking to make low poly models with CSG rather than high poly ones. This is because low poly relies on complex shapes which you have to manually “carve” with the negate tool.
If we want terrain do we need to use the roblox terrain or can we use parts?
I believe you are missing the point of my case entirely. The point is about the fact that this is the wrong incentive to give, and the whole purpose of this challenge ultimately is to have references of ‘what is technically possible in Roblox without the use of external programs’. Not only does this challenge inspire the wrong workflow for development, it is simply counter-productive.
Roblox is hereby encouraging the use of Roblox Studio as more than what it is. This is not about not being
, it’s about the fact that Roblox is trying to push its members to using Studio for more than what it is technically industrially capable of in an efficient way. It’s like teaching someone how to code but instead of teaching them the code, you make them write every line they wish to code down on a piece of paper before they type it out on an old type-writer, then scan the finished sheet of paper and scan it through a scanner. It’s plainly ridiculous.
I don’t intend to participate not because I am not willing to put in the extra effort (which I find slightly insulting to assume), but because I find it pointless to encourage this method of developing.
I re-iterate what @boatbomber stated, too:
The herein mentioned speed model wasn’t the only one either. I have gone through years of using only CSG to achieve the quality I used to put out.
Same here. These all use hundreds of unions to create this high detail look I was going for, although notably they are very old models. I’m pretty sure if I tried to edit them they would all break instantly.
Without CSG, this would have taken far less time, and achieved a better result at the same time.
Not going to lie, I think you’d have to pay me to sink time into something as tedious as using purely CSG and no external programs.
Studio is a powerful platform when you allow the use of external programs, a game engine isn’t meant to be able to do everything within it. Low poly design from purely studio tools is very hard to accomplish, especially when you look into objects like icospheres, which are pretty common in low poly vegetation. How would I accomplish this to any level of similar performance and speed?
https://gyazo.com/a1bf62bd5d607d406a2ecdd0dc0ef999 Would something like this be allowed (Using Robloxs terrain feature, Shadowmap, Atmosphere and other Realistic effects in Roblox studio) Ill be adding in parts for stuff like trees and other stuff soon!?
Exactly.
This rule against external programs would make far more sense with something not low-poly, which is generally reliant on programs like blender, and maybe something that doesn’t demand foliage to make it detailed - which is essentially impossible to make properly in CSG.
Roblox is a game engine…not a modelling software. And whilst it’s kinda cool that Roblox enables you to build to some extent on its engine, I don’t think it should push towards being what it’s not.
I want to be clear that I intended that to be a generalization of anyone not willing to work by the rules Roblox has given, not a direct insult. I apologize if you took it that way.
Again, one of the points of this project is to use the basic tools so that Roblox can further improve them for easier use.
I imagine they are knocking out two birds with one stone by implementing these contests; one by restoring a long drought of genuine interaction with the development community, and another by being able to get feedback to further improve their product. They are expecting builders to try to find creative ways to get around these challenges, rather than using solutions that have already been proven to work and have been already been implemented.
I completely understand and agree with this point but it is simply wrong. As @Ahlvie pointed out,
There is no point in trying to push for wanting to be a modelling program, or anything like that. The way I see it is that Roblox’ CSG is nice and convenient to have for less experienced developers. I mean, when I was a beginning developer and there was no meshes and such, and CSG and regular building was the go-to back then, that felt very convenient. Back then, this challenge would have made sense. But it’s now 2020, and it no longer makes sense to have a challenge on these terms.
Studio should develop itself as a game engine, and not try to expand out of that. I feel like it will inevitably become a jack of all trades, but a master at none, and that’s something I feel passionate about to avoid.
At the end of the day, who am I; I’m still curious for the results but I strongly feel that this sends the wrong message to developers. Especially new ones.
I do want to specify that I do not mean any disrespect to Roblox, Roblox Relations or the teams that worked on this, and I appreciate the efforts being made to further the community for sure. I simply would like to share my views on the impact that this challenge could have, and how important this challenge is right now, as it’s the first of many to come.
Now this will keep me busy during quarantine…
Wow! That is way better than the ravine I am making!
He would be one of the hardest judges out there. Let him be a judge.
To be honest, while this challenge seems really difficult at first, it’s surprisingly pretty easy and fun if you know some tricks.
Are decals allowed to be used in some parts of the build?
I get this competition is to showcase what the platform can do itself, but most builders who see issue are the ones who are pushing roblox to the limits, and the ones who like quality to their games. Most of my terrain I use is custom made in blender. This competition’s rule is cutting a portion of developers from doing it. Also not being able to use plugins cuts a large portion of developers from doing this because a large portion uses F3X. Such a shame.
I hope further competitions won’t be like this.
Say you already have a game that literally fits all of the requirements perfect, could you use that?
Although I do not consider myself a builder anymore, I am very happy to see this builder challenge restricting the use of external software. I think the winner/s of this challenge shall remind today’s builders of how powerful Roblox Studio’s tools are for building as often I see that some may rely too much on the use of external software rather than reaching that level of equilibrium between the use of Roblox Studio and the use of external software; where both complement each other. I am confident that the outcome of this builder challenge will be very positive as I do remember many amazing creations on Roblox even before custom meshes came to Roblox in 2016.
