Party Is Here! Unlock a New Level of Engagement

Our vision is to reimagine the way people come together. Communication is core to that vision, so we’re excited to share a new way to connect and coordinate with friends — all on Roblox.

Today, we’re rolling out Party, a seamless way for friends to group up with up to six friends and jump into an experience together, all without leaving Roblox. Earlier this year at RDC, we heard positive feedback from you in anticipation of this co-experience feature. We expect Party to increase engagement for your users as we’ve seen that sessions where users play with friends are an average of 1.9 times longer than those where users play solo (as of June 30, 2024).

Until today, users had to leave Roblox to coordinate and communicate with friends, in order to join and find each other in the same game or experience. With Party, friends can automatically join the same instance of a game or experience, without dropping in and out or wandering around to find each other. If a friend does have to drop off, they can easily re-join their Party later and jump back into the fun. Any Party can also move together from one experience to another on Roblox.

Beginning today, Party is rolling out globally on desktop as well as iOS and Android devices. Users 13 or older can also use Party chat to talk about what they are seeing and doing. That’s available with text today, and next month, Party chat will also support voice in a few countries.

We’ve also recently made updates to modernize experience controls so it’s easier for your users to access features like Party. Party chat will be a persistent icon within experience controls when there is an active Party and seamlessly move into the hamburger menu image1 when not in use.

Party for Developers

We want Party to help you provide a whole new level of engagement for your users. With just a few clicks, Party makes it even easier for users to play their favorite experiences together with friends, which drives greater engagement and more opportunities for developers to earn on Roblox.

Party API Coming Next Year

In early 2025, the Party API will be available and provide information on which users are in a Party together. This will enable you to tailor your experience to best support those in a Party and give your users a better experience overall. You could:

  • Give all party members the same visual treatment (like a medal or matching blue jacket)
  • Place all party members on the same team
  • Teleport members of the same Party to the next level in an experience or perhaps even a new world, all while ensuring they stay together

These are just a few examples to inspire you as you think about additional ways to drive novelty and engagement. We can’t wait to see all the fun ways you will build for co-experience and collaboration using the Party API!

What’s Next

Next month, Party chat will also support voice in a few countries. Soon after, we intend to scale voice globally and will keep you posted on timing. In addition, we are always working to make chat incredibly safe and are exploring new ways for users of all ages to communicate and interact safely on Roblox.

We look forward to hearing your feedback on Party.

FAQs

Is Party available on Xbox, Playstation or Meta Quest?

  • Party is available globally on desktop, as well as iOS and Android devices. At this time, Party is not available on console and VR devices. We will share updates on expansion when we have more details.

Are there any helpful ways to avoid overlapping experience controls with my experience UI?

  • Yes, we encourage you to use our TopbarSafeInsets API and signal API, accessible in both Roblox client and Studio environments. These tools make designing or adjusting your experience UI a breeze, effortlessly aligning with Roblox’s reserved space requirements. Learn more here.

Can users switch between Party chat to Experience chat within an experience?

  • Yes. Party chat image3 will be situated near Experience chat image2 in the experience control menu. You can click on either icon to switch back and forth.

Will users be able to choose if they want to join an experience with others?

  • Party is thoughtfully designed to give users control over whether or not they want to join an experience with others. Users will never be forced into an experience. Instead, in order to be moved into a selected experience with their Party, users will need to first accept an invitation to join.

What can users under 13 do with Party?

  • Users under 13 can create or join a party, but Party chat is not available. Users are able to use experience chat to communicate with others joining the same experience in public. Parents and caregivers can use our parental controls to restrict experience chat, as well as restrict Party access entirely or limit it to one-on-one access only.

Are there any changes to Roblox Chat?

  • Roblox Chat will now be Party chat image3. We know that users want easy access to chats with their friends, as well as to be able to hang out with them in a Party. As part of this release, Party now has a dedicated entry point in the navigation bar for seamless access.

Is there a particular reason for the party size to be limited to 6 people?

I don’t like this change at all. “Roblox Chat” sounds way more fun and better then “Party Chat”

Does party chat allow swearing if the party consists of all users are ID verified 17+?

Why was this released so early? Can we normalize complete features before shipping? And can console STOP being an afterthought? The API too. It’s a good feature but the rollout is annoying. (Creator team please hear this)

I’m pretty much sure just like every other single game on the market, Roblox is no exclusion and they’re facing consoles ToS, Guidelines, etc. that prevents them from rolling out updates at the same time.

Nice! Would be awesome if developers could tell who’s the leader of the party through the upcoming API.

This update is good, there’s not really much to say. I can finally play Dress to Impress with the baddies!

Why do I get the feeling that Roblox is trying to become more like Discord.

Hey @V_ersalty ! This is valuable feedback and we’ll be releasing developer APIs in the near future :grinning:

Guilded exists for that, this just makes it easier to join the same servers, so I ASSUME (clarification would be nice please staff!!!) if you have a party of 4, in a 4 player max server, it’ll create a new server and send invitations to everyone in the party.

After reading through the WHOLE announcement, I’m not sure if I missed something, but I still cannot figure out how this feature works, it’s really vague and I don’t know how to send out invites.

Will this work with existing chat groups?

I am really happy about this coming out just now! Removing the middle man for application is something I really love and with additional features make this a really good update

I assume there are platform-specific things behind the scenes, but I’d like that to either be spelled out or put the feature on hold until that can be resolved. Again, working with said platforms to get a release date, not release everything else and then console.

This party feature doesn’t mean anything to me as those I’d be playing with are on console. That’s my personal perspective here. In addition, would it not confuse many that some features exist on some platforms and not others? I say yes because that’s already happening. We should strive for parity with console and all of Roblox’s platforms.

Could this please be added? The “Party” window (previously “Connect” and “Roblox Chat”) has gone through so many changes over the past few weeks yet we still can’t check when the user has it open.

That’s pretty rare, I saw a chart saying only 2% of Roblox players use console lol.

Just curious, what’s confusing about it? It may make you a little mad but it isn’t really confusing to me as they do this all the time. If not you, who’s getting confused?

Hi @TimeFrenzied !

We’re still in the process of rolling the feature out meaning only a subset of our users have full access to the feature at the moment. In the meantime, check out this article if you’re curious about how you can create a party

Will this work with existing chat groups?

It will work with existing threads! :tada:
