Proactive Marketplace Archiving on Roblox

I’m kinda confused about the purpose of this. From what I understand, it looks like Roblox will just start randomly archiving existing avatar items whenever they feel like it, if they feel the item violates copyright. (as opposed to just outright deleting the item)

But…

  • How do we know if Roblox is even going to do anything? The marketplace is already flooded with hundreds of infringing items and Limited ripoffs, and tons more get published every single day. I feel doubtful that this new process will have any impact at all.

  • Why do we have to wait X amount of time for Roblox to randomly discover our item and decide if it’s necessary to take action? Why can’t we just archive items ourselves? We, the uploaders, know exactly what we want archived. Roblox cannot read our minds. Not every single asset we want archived happens to violate copyright, e.g. it could just be some embarrassing thing you made as a kid.

Yes, I know that a self-serve marketplace archive feature is coming, but it feels a bit silly to roll this out just a few months before said feature is supposed to release.

And also, I know about the asset archive request form. But it can take several months for you to get a response from that; we really just need a simple “Archive” button in the Creator Dashboard so we can remove content immediately.

Well, it’s about time! Here’s my question; if an item gets archived, will the users who bought it get refunded, similar to if an item gets deleted?

No, because owners of an archived item can still wear it. Non-owners won’t be able to see it on the website and it can’t be sold ever again.

and why does this come out after alot of users have been terminated already because of that issue

Im already terminated because of infringing content that was GIVEN to my account and 1 month of trying to lift the termination this exist? This wasent even a option to remove the content when I was banned and now you can remove it easily?

It seems that archiving assets with Roblox support might lead to some issues. I had submitted most of the assets, thinking I had uploaded them all myself. Turns out, some were uploaded by the group’s holder account, and the agent handling my ticket archived those as well. They probably didn’t check who created each asset for subsequent submissions; there were 97 assets on the list, by the way. If I had included a few assets completely unrelated to me, would they have archived those too? Just thinking about it is terrifying, and due to the workload, they don’t even actually check the assets.

This is a huge and welcomed change! I do have a question though.

For accounts who had actions taken on them prior to this update, will they be reinstated? I personally don’t have this issue, however, other users did not get this chance and were deleted. A lot of users can vouch for the struggle that it was (is) to get things archived, and I’m sure there was a lot on Roblox’s side too, which is why we’re here now.

For real… I’m actually tired of seeing this stuff in-game.

Yes, it did roll out to me yesterday, I got the email notification.

Awesome to see you guys clean up content from the younger version of ourselves without affecting the current version of ourselves who might not even remember that item he uploaded a few years ago.

Great update, glad that something like this has been added - acknowledging that a lot of people uploaded IP infringing content without knowing 6+ years ago (normally classic shirts/pants) where I’m sure a lot of people don’t even know that they can submit a manual request for archiving them, so an automated system like this is great to hopefully reduce the number of DMCA strikes on old content.
Can’t wait for the self serve feature - will be very useful considering the long wait times the email/form method currently has.

Interesting, and you didn’t need to submit anything?

My account was permanently banned a few months ago because of clothing I uploaded when I was young. Is it possible to get it back now?

The same happened to me on this account - but I got it back because I had submitted a ticket that had not been completed yet.
I would assume that unless you took steps to proactively remove the IP infringing content you will not be able to get the account back. From reading above, I assume that the responsibility is still yours to archive any content that should not be on the site but this tool is just to notify or attempt to do that job for you. I would not rely on this service to remove anything IP infringing and you should also submit a manual ticket.
As mentioned here:

  • You are still responsible for ensuring your creations do not violate Roblox’s Terms of Service or Community Standards. Content you upload to Roblox should not infringe on the IP rights of others.

A friend of mine had their account deleted a long time ago due uploading an inappropriate image 5 years prior as a kid. I’m sure they really would have appreciated this feature back then, but this is a really good addition regardless.

Considering the rampant and unacceptable floods of stolen content on the UGC catalog, it wasn’t hard to see this coming. I am pretty surprised to see this seemingly extends to decals and 2D clothing, however. A scorched earth approach makes total sense in this scenario.

I feel pretty sad for a lot of the small developers who have made innocent fangames or non-profit content that will undoubtedly suffer as a result of this process being automated - and the fact that appeals will undoubtedly be ignored, as is the case with many moderation concerns.

Assumedly, this is being done because Roblox’s hand has finally been forced due to non-publicized lawsuits, which, considering there are hundreds of popular anime games that blatantly steal from other IPs in an attempt to make money, I’m not surprised by. I am rather surprised this has taken priority over the copious amounts of bypassed, inappropriate, and unacceptable adult UGC content, however.

I will say I’m surprised people were allowed to upload IP-infringing assets for well over ten years without consequence and only now the hammer is being brought down. It feels incredibly shady for all of this to only be happening now. I wouldn’t be surprised, frankly, if Roblox was purposefully allowing this for as long as possible to bring in revenue from it until they weren’t able to anymore.

It’s the right approach, for now, but it is practically a burning of the Library of Alexandria for many users, and will permanently and irreversibly damage older games, as well as innocent fan projects. It’s a shame, and I think Roblox really should be held accountable for all of those projects they let fly for so long.

All of this to say, though… It’s a relief. Ever since the audio update, and other irreversible, damaging updates, I was very much sure this platform was going to become completely unsustainable eventually unless you were a professional developer working with fully original content and assets. I had seen this update coming practically a year in advance and it’s satisfying to be proven right.

Roblox as a whole seems to be a really unstable and unsustainable platform because of updates like these retroactively damaging older games, forcing updates from unwilling developers or developers who aren’t even on Roblox anymore.

There isn’t really a point to sustaining your older games or fan projects anymore because they’re impermanent, and are under constant risk of being undermined due to changes like these. A net positive to the platform for its own safety and agenda, but a huge loss for young developers looking to make something they’re passionate about.

I hope any new developers who are up-and-coming take a long think about how updates like this can come out of nowhere and nullify years of their hard work, and make preservation of said work impossible. Hindsight is 20/20, and nobody is immune. There is a lesson to be learned here, and I encourage every developer to comprehend it before committing to making a project on Roblox.

On a side note, I do hope this update eventually extends to taking down games that are obviously stealing from other IPs and profiting off of them. I hope fangames can continue to exist, but any games that are blatantly taking from existing IPs without proper licensing should be taken down. I’ve seen far too many anime games on the platform just renaming characters, items and locations slightly to try and skirt around copyright infringement. Some don’t even rename everything, but they still make money off of characters and IPs that aren’t theirs to use. If the UGC catalog is going to get this treatment, I think the rest of the platform should as well. It’s only fair, and it is the logical approach.

Maybe it’s because both accounts were verified on the same email address but i can’t think of something else on why this mistake would happen

Both are not linked to the same email address
