PSA: The Roblox app beta for Windows is now underway!

I already have the windows game installed, and it doesn’t look like that.

This app update is currently in its beta stage with only 1% of users having the option to opt-in from the homepage.

Currently you cannot open games in VR, which pretty much ruins the entire thing for me (at least)

You have to use the website to play it in VR, there aren’t any options to enable VR either.

Edit: WHAT?

After installing the app, it automatically loads in so I’d have to completely reinstall ROBLOX just to use VR, and I have to do this every time I want to use VR or the app. This is insane, and stupid.

In my personal experience the roblox beta app should be available to all members of the dev forum. Not only will this increase the number of players testing the system increasing the probability of a game breaking bug being discovered but also that means that the people being given this beta have a easier way to contact staff to report bugs and more experience with testing and bug finding.

Dang, that’s sad.
Glad I eventually got an answer though!

I didn’t even think about that. But that’s so true. That’s actually crazy great… I wonder if it would have that big of a change since people still would use the website…

Windows 8.x apps can run on 10 (provided you upgrade from say, 8.1 Home/Pro to 10 LTSB/C) and will largely work, but may upgrade if the Store is still present. You cannot, however, run UWP Windows 10 apps on Windows 8.x, because the supporting code and APIs aren’t there.

During Windows 10’s early development (9780-9899) functionality and UX was very similar to that of Windows 8.1, except the Metro apps were windowed, and some form of a start menu was reinstated. One could argue that this is what should’ve shipped as the final build of 10 as it largely appeared to be more stable, and didn’t have the junk many people oppose it for today.

I never argued anything against this point, mainly trying to point out that Windows 8.x WinRT apps and Windows 10 UWP are NOT the same thing. You can, if you know what you’re doing, run 8.x WinRT apps on 10, but you cannot do the opposite.

The UWP app is completely different to this app. This app is running via the client that you download from the website.

This looks great but I do have an issue with how your running the opt-in system. I like the idea of making it available to 1% of people but it feels like your making the existing beta program useless, I would love to check this out but I can’t as I haven’t got a prompt. Anyone in the beta program should receive this prompt as well.

Windows 8.1 apps are not classed as Windows RT (I’m pretty sure WinRT is its own OS). It is classed as a Metro app, due to the new system UI changes.

The codename Metro was dropped early in development and the technical term for Windows 8.x applications, are Windows Runtime applications, thus the WinRT referencing. I probably should’ve made that clearer.

That’s not the issue, I like organizing my desktop since I have many windows that I use at a time (Blender, PDN, Studio, etc.) and having a separate window for a Roblox app will only be inefficient.

I don’t agree with this, it should be available to Roblox beta program members not all members of the DevForum.

Will this function similarly to the Steam overlay menu, or will it be much less integrated and more of it’s own thing?

I’m using it right now and it’s absolutely crazy, I mean it’s just like the browser but it’s only for roblox. Honestly it’s just crazy.

I’m part of that 1% that got the Beta app. Here’s my experience with it so far.

Overall I like it, but there are a few things that bugs me, mainly:

  • It looks too much like the mobile version. Shouldn’t it take more advantage of the space computer screens have compared to mobile?
  • I get some occasional lag spikes, despite playing on a decent PC, but they’re barely noticeable.
  • Sometimes, when I want to reach stuff near the top, the hidden top bar pops up. A bit annoying, but nothing too serious. (I play on full screen.)
  • I find it useful to have some sort of tabs so that I can quickly switch from one page to another. Good example would be searching a lot of stuff at the same time.

I would love to opt into this…

Although IIRC, was there NOT a Roblox App for windows before? I definitely recall one much Earlier in Roblox’s life.

No, in fact there is a UWP app in the windows store for windows devices which don’t support win 32 apps, aka Windows 10 S. They’re different things. And this is way better than the UWP App for sure, the UWP app is pretty bad. This SHOULD have a better avatar editor for example.

It uses the same avatar editor has the Website

I definitely agree with this. My friends have showed me and all the game pages look exactly like the mobile screen. Just like martin said, make it similar to the roblox website and the roblox microsoft software. Anyways I had a lot of fun testing it out.
