RBXDev - Migrating to a new forum home

Hi Everyone,

I hinted at a secret project a few weeks ago, and that project is finding a better long term home for the RBXDev community. This forum software has been pretty good, but we can provide better and have found a great solution.

Some Cool Things About the New Forum
[ol]
[li]Easy to promote articles to be read by the public, meaning more content from this community can be visible to non-members. Most of the forum will still be private.[/li]
[li]Self-managing tier system for user permissions. We can easily promote new members into the lowest tier where they can work their way up automatically, gaining the ability to post more and in more places.[/li]
[li]Single sign on with ROBLOX. If you’re signed into ROBLOX, you’re signed into the forum. This means the admins don’t have to create accounts on the forum for new devs - the account will already exist with zero permissions.[/li]
[/ol]

There’s a lot more than that, but those are the big ones.

Cool Things You Are Not Losing
[ol]
[li]PMing System[/li]
[li]Polls, Images, Videos, and other modern posting features[/li]
[li]All your posts[/li]
[/ol]

There are several reasons why this forum can’t support the community we want to build. The main one is that adding new members and managing their ranks (now that we have a newbie rank) is a very manual process. We want this community to grow and manage itself more quickly than is currently possible. The less time Admins have to spend managing the forum the more time we’ll have to interact with this community. We also want a more modern forum, one that’s easy to read on your phone and that looks good next to other roblox.com pages.

We will be migrating to the new forums in the next few weeks. I will let you know when the posting cutoff time will be, meaning the time after which new posts won’t be saved over to the new forum. It will be a bit chaotic during that time. We’ll also let you know when you can preview the new forum. It’s not ready for display yet.

All the accounts and posts will be migrated - with the caveat that we can only match posts if your ROBLOX account email matches your RBXDev forum email. Otherwise the posts will be on the new site but not attributed to your account there.

Migrations can be hairy, so please bear with us during this move. We’ll try to make it as painless as possible.

Thanks,

-Becky

Update Oct 1, 2015:
We’re aiming for doing the move during the week of Oct 12, tentatively.

  • I will let you all know for sure when the end date is for this forum, meaning when we’re going to not be able to migrate posts created after that date/time.

  • I can now confirm we selected the Discourse forum software for this community. You can read a comprehensive description of features offered there, as well as discuss the platform on this thread.

  • As a reminder, please make sure your RBXdev email address matches your ROBLOX account email address. It’s critical for syncing up your posts and you having access on the new forum when we move.

THANK YOU FOR THIS PART
I would not want to have save text files of every cool tutorial and post I reference a lot. :stuck_out_tongue:

Wait, does this mean you guys are using a new software that is still not 100% made by you guys, or it is made by the ROBLOX admins?

Edit:
What exactly do we lose? Signatures? Profile images? Links to our social media accounts? Anything?

"Easy to promote articles to be read by the public, meaning more content from this community can be visible to non-members. "
Wooo! I’ve always wanted to be able to link non-members to this:

Just curious, will we be able to keep our favorited threads?

Picture example:

So have I and lots of others for tutorials and stuff. It will be a great feature to have.
I would start to make more tutorials and link people on Roblox with them, rather than A: Make them on Roblox Wikia or B: Send it in a PM and have it lost in a few days and have to retype it for the next person to ask

I really hope you will allow some users to moderate the forum. There are certainly some people capable of doing so, and it would mean the admins can focus on other things.

I somewhat thought this was a community mature enough to not really need volunteer mods…

Done it. I’m excited for the new forum.

Techy question, what forum software?

Is everyone going to be migrated over to the new forum home even the inactive people?
(Just curious, as I have some friends who rarely log in unless I tell them a new update is coming and they should check out a thread)

But the Adm----avatar stopped the (flame) war

Welp - goodbye thank yous

Oh yeah, speaking of that, what will the new forum’s karma/rating/whatever system be? I remember hearing downvotes causing trouble here so they were removed. Will we still have some sort of upvote system? Personally I’d like something like StackExchange where you can downvote posts but at the cost of losing some of your own reputation. This would ensure that people used it in moderation.

Also, @Kevin, it’s better for you probably. Right now you’re pretty stuck in the #3 spot:

Starting from scratch, you might be able to make it to #2/#1.

I generally don’t like the thank-you system as it is today. The total amount of them shows experience here, but it promotes elitism in a way that I really don’t like. A system like that is still necessary though.

Elitism this. Elitism that. I hear that way too much for something that’s not even dangerously true. There will definitely be some people that think they’re better than other people, but rarely have I seen that actually become a problem. When it does become a problem, that person should just be removed from the forums instead of whining about elitism. Remove the problem people, and don’t stereotype the rest of the community as if they’re elitists.

I do like the idea of a reputation system. It won’t really stain anyone’s record with “user has this amount of dislikes” or anything and we can still give a dislike to posts that aren’t useful (ex: exploit reports without any info, bug reports without repro steps or info, etc)

People will be limited to how much they can post and where? That sounds like a really strange thing to add.

They already have it in this forum - new users are limited to where they can post during a probationary period.

I too am interested in what software the new forum will be using.
