RBXDev - Migrating to a new forum home

Question: Will our old links that we post to other posts/threads in this forum still work?

Apparently it’s been tricky for other’s to move content from another forum engine to discourse, so i wouldn’t get your hopes up. However from the feedback Becky got from discourse users we may not be moving there anymore.

Wait, what? When did she get this? Becky’s listed as a customer already and she’s already got them to implement a feature for her, so I think we’re past the point of no return in regards to Discourse being our software.

CDEIWBOK (calm down everybody it will be OK)

Congrats on finding my posts at meta.discourse! I appreciate information abhors a vacuum and research was the obvious next step. With a project like this I don’t want to say too much up front, because things could change and this is already a big shift for this community. I don’t want to jerk this community around saying “it’s going to be like A” and then the next week “nope I was wrong it’s going to be like B.” I do want to answer all of your questions but I think it’s wiser to wait until things are more locked down.

If you’re keen on forum software I do encourage you to check out the discourse system. It’s pretty nifty.

I looked at the Discourse software, I actually like it. You can mention people in posts, and it notifies them as well. That is a feature I think could be really useful. The styling is nice, but I feel it could use our own style if used.

I actually came upon it quite fortuitously while browsing TheDailyWTF’s forums. While reading the oneboxed quote I thought to myself “this sounds a lot like ROBLOX” so I clicked the link and lo and behold there was your avatar.

I’ve been reading about it. It does seem quite interesting.

Notifying?! Awesome. When I was part of a Minecraft community, we had the Xenforo software, and notifications are useful as heck.
Does Discourse at all have message walls?

I didn’t expect my suggestion to use Discourse (I’ve suggested that a dozen times when the developer forums were initially created) to actually be taken in the end!

Will we be able to use Markdown? Will the email interface be enabled? Obviously you don’t want to answer all the questions we have now, so I’ll just wait.

There aren’t spoiler tags on Discourse :frowning:

It’s missing the tag parameters like spoiler name, image size, etc too :frowning:

Edit: Looks like there’s a plugin for spoilers

With Discourse it’s better to upload pictures, rather than link them.

Good riddance! I’ve always found them annoying and useless anyway.

But they are really useful. Think about a really long topic with tons of long images, thats where it comes in handy.

Hmm, shouldn’t these images just not be there if they’re unimportant enough that they can be hidden as spoilers? Usually when one wants to share screenshots or big images, it’s best to use attachments (or link to them, if the medium used doesn’t support attachments), because people will want to see them in full size in a separate tab, it saves bandwidth and it doesn’t distract from the text or take a lot of space.

Also, we seem to be getting away from the topic.

@ReeseMcBlox Do you have a date for the move yet?

It’s not that they’re unimportant – it’s that once you’ve already seen them you don’t need them pointlessly making the page 50 times longer.

But when you want to make your page not generate super long, a spoiler will help, especially on mobile so you don’t have to swipe a lot, so adding a spoiler plugin to the new forums would be useful if spoilers don’t exist.

Edit:
Example for using spoilers to hold info: Documentation - Roblox Creator Hub

I wouldn’t be surprised if it was by design that Discourse does not have spoilers. In any case my opinion is that in most cases it’s better to use attachments, or to link to something (like a pastebin, for long pieces of code).

@FromLegoUniverse

That example is one case where I’d rather not have spoilers and have the content directly in the post, with the images as attachments. Even better would be having a project page or website with all this information on it, and linking to that.

I guess there might be valid uses for spoilers, but almost all of the time I just see them abused.

Didn’t mean to just post negative stuff about it, sorry haha.

I just read through the comments and that was the vibe I got from it. But yeah, Becky got them to add a new feature already! And it does have some other nice features like notifications, mentions and better UI

I am so excited about this how it will turn out when the migration is finished

We do not have a date yet. The single sign on is currently in development. We want to take time to get it right since this is the first time we’ve used ROBLOX credentials to log users into another site. Would suck if someone could spoof you, so it needs to be rock solid. It’s going to be 3-4 weeks at least, I would say.
