It wouldn’t. You still get advertisements with Builders Club from ROBLOX groups and games, just not off site advertisements.
No, sponsorships and advertisements are not the same.
I like this change it makes the games page look more cleaner in my opinion. But what is the point of having a rectangular ad now since its only on the user profile page. I would either just remove rectangular ads entirely or try to find a new home for them.
So, this would reduce the likelihood of age-inappropriate ads?
Indeed, users who have paid for Builders Club received ads for ROBLOX games/groups which are moderated,
however, this removed them for NBC players, so they will no longer be receiving “age inappropriate” ads from offsite companies
Aren’t your Ads shown specifically to you, they keep track of what site you visit and show you relevant Ads, it’s not like they are going to show random 18+ Ads to a User they have no Data about, that’s not really good.
I don’t see how it’s a problem for Roblox anyways because Roblox isn’t really choosing what Ad to show but rather providing space for it, the only reason why they show Ads to NBC users is to make money from them since they might not be buying R$.
You might be right about that, but I’ve heard of incidents of users receiving NSFW ads, this could potentially be because of their search history.
Nevertheless, ads don’t always bring you to a good “website” that’s legitimate, regardless of how innocent the ad may look.
It’s not really a problem, but I believe this also disrupts opportunities for developers to advertise in prime real estate.
This seems to be a good start however it’s not that often that I get annoyed by seeing ads, I mean how else can people promote their creations? But it’s the actual quality of ads that really annoy me, I personally report all clickbait ads that I see as they’re quite literally a scam. For games such as phantom forces the ads are quite spectacular to see but others have put in no effort.
There should be a system in place to regulate and control which ads are run.
We can all say there are ads worth having on the site. Clickbait trash is not beneficial whatsoever and I believe stuff misleading does get taken down by the moderators eventually. I hope people just still report them. I honestly hope people learn not to give trashy work to really mislead kids into playing their game, it really can make their game seem worse than it really is. I honestly think they hurt themselves like that with these kinds of clickbait, let them do it and we see how well their work goes for them.
Offsite ads are monitored by Google and should be appropriate. If you see an offsite ad on Roblox that is adult or not “age-appropriate”, click the and then Report Inappropriate Ad
to alert Google so that it can be properly categorised.
What type of offsite ads you see is controlled by Roblox as part of their Google Ads account, so there should not be any ads classed as inappropriate or adult.
Sponsorships are and have been, better than ads for ages. E.g. you can target sponsorships to devices.
Although sponsorship of games is effective on platforms such as a PC where you may see 8 rows with 6 games on each, when using mobile devices you may only see a few.
Banner ads would take up a fair bit of space and have the biggest impact on, a most likely young and highly impressionable, user.
I feel like ads were more effective than sponsored games before this, but now ads are very weak. I’d prefer having ads on the games page as that’s what most people spend their time on.
ROBLOX should also let newly released games get manually put onto the featured category… Right now, the featured category is basically a randomized popular game sort… For example, why is Phantom Forces being featured? Their game has been on the front page since 2015 and it just reached over a million likes… (I am using Phantom Forces as an example because I know that their game would still be really successful w/out the featured category)
If you are about to release a quality-game, and it’s been approved by ROBLOX, then it should have a spot on the featured section. There isn’t a need to feature games that are on the front page of ROBLOX as of now - I get that showing off the best games is great for users, it’s just that it makes it harder for smaller devs.
The problem is that there aren’t many quality games that aren’t already on Popular/Top Rated/other sorts. When Featured was manually curated, most of the games had abysmal ratings. They were awful experiences for players, and it didn’t make sense to highlight games that were unpopular due to being rugged as opposed to unpopular due to lack of exposure.
If the QA testers think that the game meets high-standards, then manually adding it to the featured section wouldn’t be necessarily bad. On ROBLOX, there is a common trend where newly released games tend to be unfinished, which is why the title [ALPHA] is tacked onto many games - some of these games keep the [ALPHA] title for a few years even which makes you wonder… But for newly and complete games, this wouldn’t be a problem for promoting it.
I am not saying that the [Alpha] title is fake, it’s just that it’s over-used which makes it hard to determine which games are being finished soon, and which ones are using the title as an excuse for incomplete gameplay and/or lack of updates.
I am suggesting this because getting a newly released game broadcasted to the world sooner rather than later could help the game’s success… (of course great games usually make it to the popular sort on their own - which is why my proposed idea might not be worth discussing).
I agree w/ you on the implications that have been seen
With the amount of traffic on those pages I worry. Where ads are minimized I feel like they might maximized somewhere else.
There’s a reason why Roblox doesn’t allow ads on the Buy Robux / Upgrade Now page lol
To be fair, when the games were manually sorted, I think most were well received as indicated by the respectable player counts. Some of these games became very popular.
From my own experience, I had a game that was undiscovered for months. Then it got on the manual featured sort, and became quite successful. That was my first Roblox game, and I would not have continued my Roblox career if that did not happen.
So the manual featured sort played an important role for developers. A single week on the featured list often brought in enough revenue to pay for the development of the game. That revenue is vital, and can go into improving the game, or building another Roblox game.
Without the manual featured sort, it is impossible to get a new game discovered. Sponsor and ad prices now require so much Robux to build a game population that it out of reach for many small developer budgets. This has a huge impact on developers, who may abandon developing for Roblox if they cannot get their game discovered.
Case in point: I have a new game that has a high approval rating, yet nobody is playing it because it cannot get discovered. I tried advertising, but it costs so much now that I can’t afford to spend the amount of Robux it takes to build the population. The three months I spent developing the game are now a complete loss, since the game is bringing in no revenue.
The end result is that I may stop developing games for Roblox. If there is no fair way to get a game discovered, then the game will not generate enough revenue to cover development costs, and thus I have no choice but to stop developing Roblox games.
This would’ve been resolved if Roblox checked if the game itself wasn’t in violation of the TOS before approving each individual advertisement. While this may be tedious work it’s definitely the only way to resolve this issue aside from scrapping advertisements entirely which unfortunately might be the direction Roblox is heading.
From a business perspective I can understand why, while it’s true that not every new developer has malicious intentions it is however undeniable there have been questionable usage by new developers as an attempt for exposure or a modern way to phish vulnerabilities.
It was only a matter of time before restrictions were in place to discourage new developers from tarnishing Roblox’s image.
This has bothered me for quite sometime, I cannot stress enough my frustration with how featured is presently executed. While I’m not not on board with blacklisting known developers from applying for sponsoring I do however believe they shouldn’t be prioritized compared to a developer with 0 exposure, or any sort of fan base.
I believe if the game has 100,000+ visits than it shouldn’t qualify for sponsoring.
There’s alternative ways of advertising through social media however even that isn’t a reliable outlet for beginners when it’s also dominated by larger developers with a more substantial amount to invest.
It seems as if Roblox needs an alternative optional way of sponsoring, what I propose is allowing us amateur developers to sacrifice 5% of all profits earned within game while the sponsorship is active. I specifically said optional as not every developer would benefit from this alternative however it would make us beginners more comfortable to pursue development rather than be discouraged based on lack of resources.
This is a common thought that has come to mind multiple times in the past, while I’m fully aware it isn’t Roblox’s responsibility to assist us financially… some of us wouldn’t mind a reasonable amount of help rather then just throwing us into this market without being fully prepared for what is awaiting us.
not a developer but it seems so too, i don’t see any new games no matter how i try (unless i’m trying to sift through a bunch of games with between 0-10 players, which is tedious).
