Roblox Moments: A New Era of User-Generated Discovery for Experiences and Gameplay is Here

Hey Creators,

I’m Raj, and I lead the User and Discovery product initiatives at Roblox. I spend a lot of time thinking about how we can help you reach your audience in new and exciting ways.

Today at the Roblox Developers Conference (RDC), we announced a major step forward for user-generated content (UGC) on the platform by introducing Roblox Moments. This is a key part of our commitment to reimagine how people come together through optimism and civility, fostering creativity and self-expression across the platform. To empower this creativity, we’re launching Moments, a Roblox experience now in beta that enables users to capture, edit, and share their most exciting gameplay moments that help others find new, diverse experiences.

We believe that the time people spend together on Roblox, the epic victories, the hilarious fails, and the unforgettable moments, deserve to be shared. For years, users have been doing this off-platform, creating a massive presence with Roblox-related content garnering over 1 trillion video views on YouTube¹. We are building on the momentum we’ve seen directly on Roblox, where users have already captured over 930 million screenshots² and, in the short time since we launched video captures in July, over 240 million videos³ in experiences like yours.

The Moments experience is a direct demonstration of what’s possible with our new creator-focused tools. A new set of APIs will be coming soon to help creators build their own in-experience content creation, sharing, and discovery systems. These tools are designed to drive a new era of creativity, social interaction, and discovery on Roblox by enabling more moments to be captured and shared, putting users’ most exciting gameplay from your experiences directly in the hands of the community.

New Discovery Experience

Moments serves as an engine for discovery, immersing users in inspiring, community-captured gameplay. This feature helps users discover your experiences and the captivating moments within them. From a captivating gameplay video, users can engage with reactions and tap “Join” to instantly enter the highlighted experience. Moments is currently accessible from surfaces such as Search and the More tab, with future plans for additional placements on Home. This beta rollout is intended to gather key user insights to help us refine and optimize the feature ahead of a broader launch.

Moments provides users with an intuitive creative and discovery experience that highlights the power of the new APIs through these key steps:

  • Capture: With Video Captures, users can record and save clips of their most exciting gameplay moments, up to 30 seconds, from their favorite Roblox experiences.

  • Create & Share: Users can take their captured video to the Moments experience to craft their story by trimming their clip, adding music (thanks to our partnership with DistroKid), and writing a description before publishing their Moment for the Roblox community to discover.

  • Discover: Moments features a gallery of inspiring player-captured content, allowing users to easily find, react to, and join new experiences.

For more information, see the Help Center article on Moments FAQs.

New Creator Tools for Content Creation and Discovery

By building the Moments experience ourselves, we’re demonstrating how any creator can utilize this set of tools to build their own engaging creation and discovery features. This includes leveraging the Video Capture API and editing tools to let users record and refine clips, as well as using the Recommendation, Policy, and Moderation service APIs to help build discovery features that are both dynamic and safe.

Highlighting a few of the APIs that can be used alone or in combination to create new layers of creation and discovery:

  • Captures API (available now): Lets users record their favorite moments inside a creator’s experience. As a creator, you can also customize prompts for these captures, seamlessly integrating the feature to celebrate specific in-game events and achievements.

  • Upload API (coming by end of year): Enables users to publish and share their captured content within your experience.

  • Recommendation API (coming by end of year): Leveraging the same technology we use for Roblox Discovery surfaces like Home, this API enables you to integrate custom, content-based features directly into your own experiences. You can customize how shared content is ranked, displayed, and personalized for your audience, giving you new ways to drive engagement and retention. This enables you to build custom features that showcase trending clips and content from your own experience.

Here are a few examples of how you can use these APIs to create a more dynamic and engaging experience for your users:

Highlight Epic Wins

Let’s start by looking at how you can leverage these new APIs to automatically trigger a capture and to prompt users to share peak moments. In an Obby, for example, players are focused on making the next impossible jump, not on capturing the moment. With the Captures API, you can automatically record those peak moments of gameplay and use the Upload API to prompt players to save and share their achievement without breaking their focus.

You can then use the Recommendation API to populate an in-game highlight reel between levels, inspiring players with the best performances of the day and providing a new challenge to beat.

Inspire In-Game Discovery

You can take this a step further by using these APIs to create experiences that are deeply integrated into your 3D world. Imagine a dynamic billboard on your racetrack that uses the Recommendation API to show the coolest overtakes or the fastest driving lines from other players. It’s not just a static leaderboard; it’s a living highlight reel embedded directly into your world, providing real-time gameplay inspiration to players sharing the space.

Empower Creative Self-Expression

You can also empower players to creatively edit their captures, making self-expression a core part of the gameplay loop itself. In a fashion experience, for example, a player can strike a pose, capture their moment, and then use new editing features to add their own flair before publishing. We’ve included the foundational editing features in the Moments experience source code that will be shared with you soon, and we’re excited to see how you expand upon these tools to make creating and sharing even more fun and engaging for your players.

Dynamic Content Platform, Ready for Multiple Formats

This is a journey we are taking with Roblox creators and the community. While we’re showcasing short-form video in this first application, the tools and APIs that power Moments are built for the future of dynamic content and other forms of in-experience creation. This will unlock new opportunities for growth, monetization, and brand integrations. The future of discovery is here, and it’s being built by the Roblox community.

Built-In Safety

We are dedicated to providing a safe platform with high-quality content. We are taking a measured approach with a gradual rollout, which allows us to test and refine moderation to ensure all content is age-appropriate and aligned with Community Standards.

All captured content for publication is subject to moderation before posting, and users can easily report any content they find inappropriate. The Roblox Moments experience has a content maturity label of Moderate and is playable by users aged 13 or older at launch.

How You Can Get Started

We’re just scratching the surface of what’s possible with these examples. If you haven’t already, I encourage you to check out the Roblox Moments experience and get your users capturing and sharing from your experience by integrating the Video Captures API.

I’m looking forward to seeing how you innovate with these new tools and I invite you to push the boundaries of creativity. We’ll be announcing the new set of APIs soon that will expand what’s possible with Moments, so stay tuned!

Thank you,

We got TikTok on Roblox before GTA 6.

This is actually pretty cool though, you can put the videos in-game? That’s actually awesome.

This update sounds exciting but I am concerned about this hurting the attention span of our children, I also have a lot of moderation concerns since people can use this feature to lure in children into bad experiences.

Do these captures moments capture audio from ingame voice chat? Or only ingame sounds

nothing good can come out of this thanks roblox

With how prevalent condo games are on Roblox, I’m feeling very suspicious on how effective the safety will be.

Moderation is obviously going to be an issue with this, but I really don’t see the point in complaining about attention span problems with this. Over half of America already uses TikTok, and a larger portion of that population probably uses short-form video platforms in general. It’s not like using a different platform protects your attention span either.

Let’s just focus on moderation problems with this for now, after all, TikTok already has problems with people flashing inappropriate content for less than a second that can bypass moderation.

Children of parents that play Roblox?

I’m not concerned for myself but I am concerned for younger audiences.,

No idea what your point is.

Very excited for this feature, but it’s pretty much a necessity that the capture API supports capturing the previous 30 seconds of your gameplay rather than just the upcoming 30 seconds of gameplay.
From what I saw so far this doesn’t seem to be the case (yet)?

Most clipping software is used when something cool happened in the past and you want to quickly share that. It’s hard to anticipate when something cool is going to happen.

Especially from a developer POV it’d be great to figure out when a player hits certain goals and we can capture the last half minute that highlights that achievement and allows players to share that.

I can finally doom scroll but exclusively Roblox content…. Nice job building good habits for the young! :coefficients:

I don’t think making a joke in a serious topic is needed right now

Like I said previously, TikTok has a HUGE problem with people flashing inappropriate content within several frames to bypass moderation. Even though they’ve limited that type of capability here, just imagine what you can do with 30 seconds time to try to show inappropriate content. It could always be in the background or in an innocuous place that people would normally not be looking for.

This is only as helpful as people’s ability to manually record moments that are interesting - OBS and Nvidia Shadowplay get people’s attention because they’re able to press a button that automatically clips content that happens 15-30 seconds prior.

Although the dev API lets developers automatically do this - can users automatically do this?

Yes, you’ll be able to place and view them in-game

I think it would be great if my developer friend and I decided to integrate this new API into our FPS game to capture the best moments and show them at the end of a match.
