Selection Improvements

Hi @Xyqena - we’re working on improving this workflow. Would you mind providing more context about the specific workflows that are broken by selection cycling? If you’re trying to use alt+click to select a part within a model, selection cycling shouldn’t interfere with this workflow. Would love to understand this pain point better. Thank you for the feedback- looking forward to improving your experience with these features.

Agreed. This is absolutely unusable for me when trying to precisely build, line parts up in the exact position, or with each other, etc. Need an occluded option esp. for bounding box. Turning Beta off for now. If this is forced on us without being improved, I will have a tantrum lol

@kotel2005 and @unmiss – a fix for this is in the works! Thanks for calling this out. To ensure we fully understand the pain points related to precise building, could you walk through your workflows for (1) lining parts up in the exact position and (2) lining parts up with each other, both with bounding boxes and (attempted) with selection outlines?

@GreatGuyBoom thank you for your feedback – we’re working on improving selection cycling based on user feedback. Would you mind explaining in more detail what specific workflow is blocked by selection cycling? We are aware of the issue that, if you have a part within a model selected, and you try to alt-click that part again to drag select it, selection cycling means alt-click will select the atomic part behind that part. Is this the issue you’re facing, or are you experiencing a different frustrating UX?

Hi @Dysche - wanted to follow up on this question to ensure we address your concern with this beta feature!

Hi @ItsKoiske - there was a bug that prevented selection of parts with CanQuery disabled – this has been fixed. Are you still experiencing this issue?

@kirazeee325, I’m getting awful performance with this update :( Posted details here but after disabling the beta feature the lag went away, I thought it might’ve had to do with the selection box update which is why I posted it under this post but it turns out it’s this update.

Edit: never mind, it was because there was a humanoid in the workspace

The fitted outlines could in some scenarios make it harder to descern the size of shapes such as the cylinder compared to neighbouring parts in the picture I attached. Having the option to switch between fitted outlines and regular bounding box would be useful. It’s easier to visually compare two cuboids than it is comparing an arbitrary shape to a cuboid.

Oftentimes I find that while working on parts in a model, especially when dragging that part if it’s already been selected (click and drag) that is when I start to experience frustration. Moving selection cycling to an option or an alternative key would be a lifesaver.

Honestly disregard my feedback, at the time for some reason I had a strong belief that alt-clicking was how you selected decals/textures within a part. I believe it was me guessing at my muscle memory, but since then I’ve realized my own thought process was what was counter-intuitive to my workflow.

Though, possibly could be related. It’s simply too hard to select a decal/texture of a part that’s parented to a model. I can’t select the decal/texture without also selecting the model — I think maybe I thought at a point in time, holding alt when selecting a decal/texture on a part would allow me to not select the parent model as well.

It seems my issue is unrelated, and could be looked into regarding even more improvements from your team. Thanks for the opportunity on feedback!

You can click several times on the decal/texture, and it should select, but it’s quite inconsistent at times. There’s also no dedicated keyboard shortcut or documented user input controls for it either.

I ask that you leave the legacy selector in place and make it an optional use. The new beta one doesn’t allow visualizing and manipulating within a small space which is typically how my work is done; small and detailed. I am physically struggling and oddly, becoming nauseated with this selector. I’ve done my tests and it’s only with that one. Very odd, probably unrelated but it is causing a lot of discomfort in-use.

Almost everything I’ve worked on recently is not alligned properly as the bounding box will simply not show outlines well (or the outline is transparent-ish) and it really making studio a displeasure to use.

@Dysche , does the current option of toggling bounding boxes on/off address this issue? Or do you find that having the selection outlines on (w/ bounding boxes) hinders your scaling workflow?

This makes a lot of sense. We’re in the process of ensuring selection cycling doesn’t interfere with this workflow!

@a_eschylus , thank you for the feedback. Could you elaborate on why selection outlines mess up your alignment workflow? Does toggling bounding boxes on (with the beta turned on, which means that bounding boxes and selection outlines are on) solve these alignment issues? Thank you for your feedback!

You can tell if it’s a model or not by looking at the pivot. If it’s a model there will be a pivot in the center, if the parts aren’t grouped, nothing shows up.

I noticed when selecting multiple objects, a bounding box will enclose them, regardless of the Bounding Boxes being toggled on or not. This makes it impossible to work with multiple small parts selected, as it is completely obstructive.

It’s literally a beta feature. I’m surprised on how many people like this say that.

Honestly, this is where my development knowledge falls short. I’m not sure what specifically it is in comparison to both of them but all I can say is the new one doesn’t work well with small intricate things as other bounding boxes either capture over the item, or it simply dissapears when moving into another item versus the old one.

When I first tried it out I was pleasantly surprised but after restarting studio once, with the setting enabled, there is no selection outline whatsoever. I have tried restarting and toggling the setting but it still doesn’t work.
