As we mentioned in last week’s Creator Roadmap update, we will sunset Studio support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. Starting on March 20, 2025, you must upgrade to Windows 10 or higher to use Studio.
We’re making this change to ensure that creators using Studio have the best experience. We will add banners to Studio and our creator docs early next year to help inform all creators of this change.
How many people total are actually on these OSs? If someone can share that I’m sure it’d make people feel better about this decision. Even just a percentage.
If you’re dropping support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, I feel like it really is the time to begin culling the fat that is extremely old android devices (and apple devices) that do not support modern standards which are required for features we long for.
It’s always sad to see things get sunsetted. But hopefully with the sunsetting of these devices we can get even better features which won’t need to be heavily optimized to allow these older devices to work.
Can’t say im surprised it’s happening, perhaps that it took this long even.
I’m not afraid to say this but if you’re still using windows 7 in 2024 as a main operating system, you are either blinded by nostalgia or really stupid. or both.
I agree with this, there’s really not a need to support old devices either
That’s perfectly fine, even the slowest computer I own, an old one that sounds like a
formula 1 car, has Windows 10 installed, so I’d say this is a good desicion if that means more advanced features for everyone.
I do not understand why there is a consensus that using EOL operating systems that are no longer supported nor actively maintained by Microsoft (or any other company, for that matter) means that third-party platforms should still support them. Like @Dekkonot said, the share of users that even play ROBLOX on Windows 7/8.1 is negligible at best.
This change could not have come too soon, and we need to cull old mobile devices next to pave the way towards giving developers more power.
Although this change may be somewhat necessary, I feel it’s a bit rushed. A trade off could be granting Linux users the ability to play again. Yes, according to the % of Roblox users on Linux is very small, I still feel like it’s a shame it was broken and never resolved.
