Terrain Editor Update [Beta]

Will we get more terrain material slots in the future?

This update is kinda bad not gonna lie. UI looks okay but the insane amount of obvious bugs is laughable.

I had made a whole game in 2015 that was built around the one use case that the old cube terrain had over current smooth terrain (being 1:1 with bricks), when that was removed I actually just straight up quit for 3 years. Nowadays that game uses more conventional building systems, but it was quite a shock as I was used to Roblox never removing underutilized features.

I’d still want it back if only because I haven’t fully removed terrain use in that game during initial map generation (before players get to do anything) and it’d be nice to keep the materials 1:1 again.

That’s nice and all, but are these ripples ever going to get fixed? The fact gentle slopes have these ripples is rather grim.

Ok, can you guys actually fix terrain now no one cares about the editor. This is so annoying to make. Impossible actually

It looks like your issue is that there’s a cut/hole in the terrain where you don’t want one. If so, you can use the Flatten tool to flatten out the Terrain in that area. Or, you can use the Smoothen tool to smooth out the Terrain to be less jagged.

Weird bug found, it refueses to subtract/add terrain to two specific locations for no reason.
The first place failed to subtract at all as it auto adds back the terrain when im pressing with subtract mode.
The second place failed to add terrain as it auto subtracts back the terrain and leave there a hole after using add mode.
I fix it by restarting studio at last.

The update somehow tanks performance when a brush is in use and is very slow/not responsive when using the paint tool. Not sure how a UI update makes the features worse but it’s not a good thing.

@Irrelius Took a look and was able to find a fix.

@HeyYo87 Did you use shift to smooth while using the sculpt tool? I have feeling these issues may be related.

Thats great news! We hope that it will be easier to make massive maps in the future and also hope for performance improvements! What I want to recommend is adding a feature that generates terrain from a mesh and reads off the terrain color mapping from the mesh color mapping.

what game is that? looks familiar

Please overhall the whole terrain system its too basic for it to be useable compared to meshes and parts. Would be better if it was more customisable, like grass and texture of it, better water, ability to align terrain parts, Spline creation - I know you can do this with scripts but it would be easier for beginners - Could be used for roads or rivers. Less laggy with large maps. Ramp tool. Layers. Terrain Collision. Basically what Unreal and unity do.

Yes I do, perhaps that’s the issue. I realised that pressing shift will make the tool auto change from add to subtract/from subtract to add.

Alright, your issue should be fixed next week then. Shift actually allows you to temporarily use the smooth tool, you can also have the tool change from subtract to add or add to subtract, this uses the control/command key though.

We need:
-option to place part on terrain position via script
-textureless terrain colors
-one sided terrain option not brick because we have to generate two sides and it takes more time and memory probably.

Can you add the air material back to the fill? It sucks if you have multiple terrain materials to have to replace each one with air. But overall, I like the new UI, just can’t use it due to this issue.
