Terrain Editor Update [Beta]

No worries, I will take a look at this issue and get back to you in case I need any further details.

EDIT: Was definitely able to reproduce the issue, thanks for reporting this!

BTW, I flipped the fix for the manual plane lock, so this should work properly now.

Hey there! Overall the terrain updates in the last time were really cool. Altough i have 2 things:

The new UI makes the sliders wayyyy too small so I cant really accurately drag them anymore (why not expand it until the end of the frame?)

The terrain brush started to lag really hard after getting the update. With that i mean that the sphere in picture lags behind the mouth cursor and often “teleports” without doing any terrain operations.

I’ll pass the request for the slider along to our designer. That being said, your window is rather thin and you may want to increase it’s width. I’ll look into a better way of determining the space we use for labels + the properties they describe, we recently adjusted the sizes here to make sure localized labels are still properly visible.

As for the lagging brush, from the image its pretty hard to tell what you mean. Would it be possible for you to send a video of the behavior you are describing?

Hello Creators!

We’re coming closer to being able to fully release this feature to everyone and shift out of beta. We’re tracking down and closing out the last couple of bugs and there will be some performance uplifts and improvements to the feel of the sculpt and flatten tools very soon. The flatten tool will feel more like the flatten tool from the old terrain editor and the sculpt tool will have it’s strength scaled based off of the size of the brush, so that small brushes don’t feel too fast, and big brushes don’t feel like they are too slow.

That being said, if there are any other bugs you are running into, please report them so that we can go through and resolve them! Thank you!

props to you for being so active with the community, I almost never see roblox staff respond to messages this much, but I love when I do! keep it up

I dont know how visible it is in the video. I’ve recorded one with the “old” thing on and the new one.
You can see that with the new one, the brush gets significantly laggier and it lags behind when rotating the camera.

Also another request: after working with the brushes for a while i’ve noticed that i have difficulties distinguishing the different materials because of the new spherical pictures. It would be great to have an option where it just shows the old square with the normal texture.

(the video files are too big so here’s a dropbox link: Dropbox)

Also i encountered this strange bug where the slider goes into the wrong direction (and is in the frame) Dropbox

I was able to figure out how to properly address the cursor lag, the other is more of a design request. I’ll forward that information to our designer, though I’m not quite sure we’ll change this. Also that slider issue is very strange, I’ll be taking a look at it.

Hello! Using the Beta Terrain Editor has brought me 2 problems (regarding importing):
1: When I upload a heightmap I am not able to remove it (same with the colourmap) in any way using the trashcan button (the only solution for me is to just reopen Roblox Studio)
2: Every colourmap I upload turns into a sort of grey scale

I’m rolling out a fix for the heightmap deletion thing now. I’ll check the colormap issue to see what needs to be fixed.

I’m having performance issues when using the new terrain editor.

What kind of performance issues are you running into? Which tools and settings are you using? We’re going to be rolling out performance improvements soonish.

Here’s a feature request that I would like to see implemented with the new terrain editor.

Terrain editor fill should include other shapes and orientation

@ProtoValence I’m not sure who was assigned the bug report that I submitted, but it has been partially resolved. The air material is still missing from the source list. Furthermore, there’s a very serious issue with the display panel as some of the settings are covered up and not accessible. Furthermore, after selecting other tools, what is visible and not visible changes, so it’s not always consistent.

Fill Tool:

Paint Tool:

I’m sure there’s other tools that are affected, but those are the ones that I have noticed, for now.

You can use backspace as a replacement for the air material, as Valence mentioned above, for other things, I’m not so sure about

The flag that fixed the weird UI issues should have been flipped last week, but for whatever reason there seems to have been an error and it didn’t actually go through. This should be fixed soon.

Haven’t gotten to air material yet.

@ProtoValence Just so you know, in case you haven’t looked at the bug report yet, the air material is critical as a source material under Paint->Replace when carving out existing underwater terrain. If the carving goes beyond the water boundary, then air pockets form where the water is not present, but it should be. So I use Paint->Replace with Air->Water to fix that.

What’s your opinion about the feature request?

Yes, I have seen the bug report. I just haven’t gotten to it yet, as I’m prioritizing resolving bugs at the moment. But I will be getting to this fairly soon.

Edit: Unfortunately needed to revert performance improvements.

why did it work woth the old brush but not with the new one? It significantly worsens the experience. Could you mabye add some kind of button to toggle between the “laggy” brush and the laggy brush?
