Terrain Editor Update [Beta]

Also @EinMarek

Sometimes a design looks good on paper, but isn’t great in practice. In terms of your productivity and preference, which would you prefer?

  1. Zoomed-in Shaded Spheres
  2. Zoomed-in Unshaded Spheres
  3. Flat Unshaded Flat Preview
  4. Dropdown for material selection (with labels)

From what i know, the flat unshaded flat preview worked. But the spheres could also work if they were bigger + lightly shaded. Labelling them would also be a great idea, especially for the colorblind people out there.

The problem is that they aren’t exactly easy to label in the sense that there really isn’t any space for text. Are tooltips enough, or does there need to be more? Definitely get the accessibility angle on this one as well.

As for the spheres, I will explore the option of having them more zoomed in and unshaded.

You could make the source material frame to a scrollingframe if that’s possible. I’d prefer scrolling a bit than hovering over every sphere and waiting the second for the text to show

I think just using the default colors and texture the terrain actually is, within studio, would be perfect. That’s what we’re used to seeing.

Right now, the icons on the tool look nothing like the terrain in-game

Take a look at the image. On the left, you can see obsidian is black, tesselated. Cobblestone has its own clear texture. Those grey pillars have a clear unique appearance. I challenge you to pick the right icon from the right in one shot. The icons should reflect how the thing will look.

How many greyish blobs do you see here? I count 11!! yet in-game, each of these is wonderfully unique, great to look at, special. Show off the awesome stuff you have made Roblox. Why hide it? it’s great! NO user of this wants dun-colored mess. They want to EASILY be able to see the terrain the way it actually looks in most games! That makes it much easier to pick the terrain you are looking for, which is the main function of this UI. We have to be able to look at that grid of icons and figure out which icon represents what texture. That’s why they have to look like the thing they are. (Also, mouseovers couldn’t hurt but do not solve it). Let’s go Roblox

I think part of the issue is also that the UI versions don’t have the terrain colours that we’re looking at ingame, so the visual connection is missing

Oh I found this great official image of the terrain types. They are really nice!

Those would be great to use, since they look a lot more like the terrain type the user is drawing!

I just noticed, did the terrain tools update seriously clamp water? I used to be able to have a custom water height with the old Draw tools, being able to tweak the level of a water’s surface by, idunno 0.2-0.4 studs. But now I can only draw water with the surface height being clamped to 1 stud increments… good god I hate this update.

WDYM, with water being clamped? You should still have subvoxel precision for the sea level tool. If you want to provide more info, or a video, please reach out in a DM.

In light mode the selector for which terrain is enabled is broken and I can’t see that here I have sand selected. This is after I just installed Studio on a new laptop

The popular plugin “part to terrain” also uses a visually detailed set of icons for the terrain types!

You can just look at them and see what terrain you’re picking!

heres a video of the issue, its made draw tool unusable without planelock (which makes workflow unsatisfying and slow)
it seems like this happens when theres this either frame rate drop but it always has a very clear pattern when it happens, where the draw tool suddenly comes up really close to the camera, and after looking behind the terrain youll see an extremely long path.
really hope this is figured out, goodluck and thank you!

Yes! This didn’t use to happen with the old version. It happens a ton now, and I have to constantly undo or be really careful to avoid it. Definitely slows things down. And if you don’t notice it happening you can lose a ton of work. It’s happened to me a bunch. I have a big terrain place so this is pretty impactful for how I used to draw terrain.

i feel like the whole solution is to just let us increase the sculpting strength beyond 1 and its taken since february for… nothing

I have three major issues with the change:

  1. The sculpt tool is INCREDIBLY slow
It’s like a tenth as fast as it used to be. it’s incredibly hard to use because it is just so slow even at full strength. PLEASE bump up the speed massively

  2. As others have said, the material selection orbs are really hard to use because everything looks the same/similar. I find myself having to hover over everything to see the name of it cause i just cannot tell.

Also a bug:
When you select one of the tools, such as draw or sculpt, and move your cursor to use it, holding B to adjust the size of the brush does not work. You have to use the brush/right click the main window before you can hold B to change the size.

Any chance you can let us change the hotkeys at some point? I find the new configuration really uncomfortable to use and I prefer the old one

Oh wow, I had no idea b+mouse drag had that effect. I was looking for the old system with ctrl/shift/alt + mouse wheel scrolling. Interesting, good to know.

For a feature, it would be great if that were discoverable. I’ve used the new tools for I’d guess 10+ hours without knowing about this shortcut.

Any updates on when we will be having the ability to make custom grass and terrain decoration as promised a few years ago?

I found a very strange bug. Here you can see I had the sculpt tool out, max strength, subtract mode, and when i tried applying it to this area of terrain this sphere appeared and it actually increases in size as I’m trying to shrink it with the sculpt tool

Same issue happens using the draw tool:

After using the editor more, this update is extremely buggy and borderline unusable. Why is this BETA update forced on for everyone? I can’t make terrain in the way I used to be able to because the brushes are constantly bugging out and are generally just worse than what we had before. The only good thing in the update is the new selection boxes, but the new brushes are vastly worse. I just experienced a bug where the sculpt tool would continuously be growing a section of terrain after I turned it off and could do nothing about it but exit studio.
