Upcoming Changes to Avatar Catalog Upload Requirements

Do not presume so wrongly of Roblox. All they’re trying to do is add an extra layer of security and finally fix what we’ve been requesting for years. Whether this be the correct way as of now or not, it’s best we support Roblox by communicating with them instead of insisting they won’t do anything about it because you’re not ‘big enough’. Sure, maybe some bias is shown there on Roblox’s behalf, taking in critical criticism that a large audience supports portrayed through an individual who hosts Roblox on their social media platform, like Roblox youtubers.

Instead of insisting Roblox won’t heed to any criticism it gets based on your little to no following, be optimistic and actually suggest what you think can improve it, instead of doubting them like they do not care about any of us in any way, shape, or form. It’s not healthy and helps none of us at all.

They already get 70% of their profit.

While we’re here discussing the clothing fees, I’d like to bring up something that I consider has been plaguing clothing since the beginning.

The absurdly small templates that we are forced to use, its usable, sure, but you have to sacrifice a ton of detail that could evolve how avatars would look on Roblox.

Why are such measures still in place?

There are lots of pros and cons to this update. Personally, I think that there could have been other methods to reduce spam, for example:

  • Keep the premium requirement.
  • Install an upload cooldown.
  • Clothing title character limit.
  • Account age minimum for uploading clothes.

While I agree something needs to be done, I don’t think that a fee is the right way to go. While 100 Robux doesn’t seem like a lot, it is if you’re a mass producer. For example, if you create one shirt that costs five Robux, you’ll need 34+ sales to get a profit. That’s not including any advertising you may need to do. The fee really adds up. If you upload even just one piece of clothing per week, in a year you will be deducted 5,200 R$ just for fees.

Overall, I’m in support of adding more restrictions for uploading clothing, however, a fee is not the way to go. I would support a fee if you lowered the tax rate on clothing, however, a fee and a tax cut seems like too much.

I think this Roblox update is severely detrimental to smaller groups and clothing designers.
Let’s look at this from the point of view of someone who sells clothing to groups:

  • Designer creates an original design

  • Designer is a beginner, sells templates to others, is within a smaller community, anything over 200 Robux would probably not be purchased.

  • The Designer is now losing money, due to the fact that if the purchaser is not able to upload the clothing, the designer is now spending 100 Robux to upload it.
If the developer refuses to upload the clothing, the purchaser may claim the designer as a “scammer” or a “fake”

Now let’s look at this from a smaller group perspective:

  • A smaller group with 300 members wants to upload a piece of clothing.

  • They now have to spend 100 Robux which they will not make back for weeks.

With premium, this was not an issue, you were charged once a month and you went on with your life.

(Please understand that this is a situation that would most likely happen in my community, I understand that everyone has different views on how this may affect them.)

I’ll add one more to that, people who bot the avatar shop already have deep pockets. So like Dove said, you’re not only hurting small creators, but you’re also not solving the problem at all. This is just kicking the can down the road because Roblox refuses to crack down on any sort of black market activity. Botting, USD buying, the works… I won’t even dive into their awful security systems.

This. Is an upload cooldown, either per-user or per-group (or both) too hard?

An account age minimum with a much stricter cooldown or even outright hard limit would be just as good an idea (however it’s not hard to find dumps of stolen accounts, all which would likely be a few months old each, so it won’t stop a small portion of the smarter/more stubborn botters)

We already have a very small clothing title character limit however, so shrinking that even more won’t change too much, not to mention what’s stopping botters from going with that and spamming the description with the names?

Another issue that I just thought about is “pending funds”, The creator may not be getting this Robux back for almost a week. Which doesn’t mean “less fake clothing” it means less uploads and less motivation from smaller creators.

Yes, clothing designers do commissions.
However, what about what communities they are advertising commissions too?
That factor in my experience has been the biggest thing when seeing people do commissions.

Personally, I think that they should just remove descriptions from clothing. They aren’t really used for anything, and they just help the botters.

Im a little iffy about removing descriptions. What able people who commission others to design clothing then upload the clothing themselves. Its nice for the designer to have some type of credit in the description.

It’s such a big problem because I just got premium for the first time a couple days ago and am starting a group. Smaller clothing creators won’t be able to afford this and if those changes happen, I won’t consider continuing my group.

Premium was already locked behind a paywall and people still botted it, I just don’t think that this is a good solution to ‘solve’ clothing botting (which is the only good advantage to this situation).

Their motto is “Powering Imagination” but I can’t even afford to put a shirt I created for sale…

Well yes, but if Roblox eventually sees that taking away all of these, ironically, premium features from the membership, they’ll bring out new features in no time, as this one is not only a real-life transaction, but a reoccurring one also.

Check out my proposal. Give me your opinion.

My proposal is:

  • Roblox goes ahead with its upload tax. This is priced at R$ 50 , 0.18 cents.
  • Roblox reduces the market fee by 5% or 10% for all clothing related items (shirts, pants, t-shirts), allowing for a higher creator income.
  • Roblox makes it so the minimum clothing price is raised from R$ 5 to R$ 10, allowing more room for creator income & Roblox having their share, the market fee.
  • Roblox utilizes their touch with the community to aspire more designers into becoming bigger clothing ‘companies’ if you will, to make sure the market doesn’t fall under value or dry up due to these new updates and policies.
  • I also implore that Roblox add a new department to their Moderation Team completely focussed on the catalog, UGCs and clothing items alike.

This is my final proposal on what Roblox could do to improve the market before it’s washed away for good, and saving it may be too late.

So I’ve been following and posting on this topic since it was first announced, and I’m able to see a simple statistical pattern.

  1. Most established designers, regardless of “size” are mostly against having a fee to upload. In my opinion, and many other designer’s opinion apparently, I believe that putting a fee of any sort on an industry that already has paper-thin sales and margins is going to completely kill anyone trying to go into the industry, whether they’re already established or not.
  2. Most of those in support of this update are those who have always wanted to design clothes but have not been able to due to an inability to purchase Premium. Most posts that I’ve seen that fit under this category couldn’t care less about the fee, just the fact that the Premium-wall is being removed.

Based on this, I think this says a lot about this update. The people that have experience in this industry and already are invested in it are (mostly) against it. Those that want to get started in the industry couldn’t care less about the fee-update.
Does this not explain everything about the controversy of this update?

I don’t think you ge the point behind this.
Let me explain:

If you do the math you’ll realize that bots will be needing to pay more to be able to upload shirts.

Let’s say that they want to upload 100 copies of 1 shirt. If the fee is 10 robux per shirt, then that’s ganna cost more than10 real life dollars. Which is twice the cost of premium (5$).
Unlike a legit clothing designer, clothing designers won’t be able to make that much clothing in one month, even if they make 2 shirts per day.
It will cost either less or as much as 5 dollars per month.
Maybe even a little more but that is still worth it because it will help cleaning the clothing pag alot + it will also help clothing designers to be noticeable in the clothing page.

Premium benefits get reduced means players buy less premium means games get less premium payouts. What this update does is that Roblox has to pay less premium payouts to games now. The disadvantage for them is players don’t buy premium means Roblox gets less cash. This is in favor of everyone but those who want Roblox’s community to stop growing. Can’t you cost clothes 1 Robux and still require the having premium thing? It won’t affect our premium payouts!!!

This is a bit annoying with the fee. I use a friend’s premium account to make clothing, and now roblox has made it so then only rich roblox users can make more money off of shirts. This was all we needed. Yes, some of the rich robloxians who don’t have premium will benefit the most. At this pace, it’s gonna cost robux to make games.

Another way for roblox to suck robux out of us, so typical.

The irony that the author is called “givenothingback” makes the update pretty funny.

This might eliminate some botting which is good. Its a shame this wasn’t tackled, idk, five years ago when it was becoming a problem.

People who do commissions shouldn’t be affected that much if they can test in studio beforehand.

Small time designers with clothing groups will not be able to spend 200 robux to upload their outfits if they are only breaking even after 6 months to a year if at all.

Big copy groups will not be particularly dissuaded because they will have the funds to pay these fees.

I do think it really sucks that people who just make stuff for fun or for a small group of fans will be punished because ROBLOX were too lazy to come up with a real solution over the past 5 years. But oh well.
