Updated Studio Start Screen

Thank you for disabling le feature.

When will this be re-enabled? I liked this update. :frowning:

Temporarily disabled because of a critical issue (studio performance). Will be re-enabled soon.

Iā€™d greatly appreciate it if it didnā€™t default to the Templates page upon booting, this page is entirely useless for me and Iā€™d imagine itā€™s useless for the vast majority of other Studio users. Itā€™d be far more efficient for me if it defaulted to recent files.

Can we hold off on re-enabling until the other larger issues are addressed as well? The new layout is detrimental to usage of Studio for reasons I posted earlier. Donā€™t see a benefit to trying to push it out ASAP when itā€™s not easier to use than the baseline.

Edit: Specifically, the serious issues are:

  • Forced merge of games/places
  • Removal of classic mode when new layout does not offer sufficient functionality
  • Removal of necessary content in menu bar

Sad that it got disabled so quickly, I wanted to give a try and I was at school while it was first enabled!

You should read the thread before posting

As was posted above, it was temporarily disabled.

Was about to delete my post when I started scrolling up.

It appears to be re-enabled now.

Itā€™s alright; I would prefer the recents tab to be the default though.

Changes to widgets are not saving.

Original:

Adjusted:

After restarting Studio:

Repro steps:

  1. Open Studio
  2. Use File>New because the New Quick Access button was inconveniently removed
  3. See weird widget scaling
  4. Fix widget scaling
  5. Click the ā€˜xā€™ button on the Place1 tab
  6. You will be brought back to the landing
  7. Restart Studio
  8. Create a new place and see changes to widgets were not saved.

I am also having issues with an infinite ā€œLogging inā€¦ā€ screen on the landing page. Iā€™ve been setting here for ~5 minutes and it has not gone away, but it still says ā€œEchoReaperā€ in the top-right of the menu bar. If I enable the output/etc from the landing page (RMB on menu bar), this does not save either. Having to disable via fast flags.

Absolutely gorgeous update. This has been a long-time needed change thatā€™s finally happened. The good changes just keep on coming!

Gripes after using it for a little bit:

  • An open button should be under ā€œRecentā€ like I suggested earlier so that opening a game that you havenā€™t opened recently can be done so easily. It makes sense because everything else to do with opening a place is right there in the menu as well.

  • Text appears blurry in 1080p for some reason: (this is full resolution) image

  • Shadow behind place tiles seems very laggy. Takes a good second for it to switch to the one I am currently hovering. (Due to the FPS restrictions of Gyazo it doesnā€™t look too bad here but it is pretty noticeable)

https://gyazo.com/26abb9963a38dea0a4600af39a71fcf0

  • Clicking between the tabs on ā€œNewā€ takes a decent amount of time to load in the tiles while switching between tabs in Recent and My Games is a little laggy but it doesnā€™t switch tabs until the tiles all load.

  • The start screen does not stay open after opening a place or file so if I have to open multiple files I have to load studio up mutliple times and do each one individually or open them from my file explorer.

  • There is no easy way of managing plugins without opening a place first. If I need to quickly install a new plugin that someone recommends I have to open a place in order to do so which just is an added hassle.

I donā€™t know if all of these issues are strictly because of the new start screen, but theyā€™re issues that I noticed with the newest version of Studio.

I spent more time with the update; I am very much a fan of how responsive it is!
It is nice. I only wish I could have it default to ā€œRecentā€ or ā€œMy Gamesā€

Speed and loading times are essential. Itā€™s good that this layout delivers on that, but please make it continue delivering with any changes/ additions.
I do wish we had quicker access to things such as uploading assets or going straight to the library, or anything plugin installation related.

I wish locally saved place files auto-generated icons.

I wish I were able to open studio and open my most recent file with a single click.
There is a LOT of screen space used up. If we had most recent lining an area, that would be nice.
Iā€™m not too fond of the design choice of the buttons on the left. It would make much more sense to me to have all panels present right in front of the user but allow us to add/ remove panels/ shift their positions at will.

Itā€™s studio. Itā€™s not like weā€™ll be accessing this on our phones or a million different computers. I sit down at home, edit places. Only instance I can imagine this not being that easy is at Roblox HQ, where opening Studio on yur account on different computers seems like something which would happen regularly.

Initial screenshot was misleading due to how small it is. In practice, thereā€™s so much wasted space since Studio is almost always maximized. I donā€™t like having to click to the recent tab to see things that could be visible with all the wasted space on the home page. Iā€™m all for simplification, but when afterwards the changes make tasks take more steps for the end user, youā€™re doing something wrong.

I also agree with some above posts that you shouldnā€™t hide the toolbar, it makes it so you have to open a place to do things like configure plugins which donā€™t actually require a place to be open. I also agree that there should be a ā€œview startpageā€ button. Because this was removed, you have to go to the website to open places when you already have a Studio window open.

You can design a clean interface without removing features. Please understand that.

It looks really nice but Iā€™m not a fan of how minimalist it is

thereā€™s a lot of wasted space that could be used to make it easier to use

Amen. I was just about to come here and complain that my recent files are now behind a click when thereā€™s SO MUCH wasted space. You beat me to it. This update keeping true to the Roblox standard of cleaning things up by removing things.

That said, I love that recents have combined local files and published stuff. Definitely a good consolidation given that thereā€™s more space for more recents. Can we please get a generated icon for the .rbxlā€™s on the list? Like, part of the file is a screenshot of where you saved.

Why is it sorted by game rather than place? If you use a game universe, you canā€™t edit anything other than the start place unless you manually click ā€˜editā€™ on the website now.

Roblox has been trying to consolidate games/places to make them easier to use, but currently theyā€™re not ready for that. They both have tons of redundant behavior, and games are by far the least useful of the two. Theyā€™re not ready to combine.

I feel like the game/places combinations theyā€™re going for would be fine if it worked kind of like folders and other objects in the explorer/properties window.

If we were able to see all of the places in a game, clearly as part of the game, and edit any of them, without opening it up in Studio or going through extra steps, it would be perfect! Especially if we could see and edit all of the properties easily, in a list, in the same location. I can imagine an Explorer-like screen, split with a Properties-like panel on the right, where you can select any game or place, edit its properties, and choose to edit the contents of the place all from one screen. It would be perfect!
