Upgraded Materials, Material Manager, and More!

It’s really cool that you guys are trying to add advanced material options, but this is a messy thing, it pops up and you still gotta apply it? What about add the material manager tab for advanced materials but leave the old one with just default materials for quick selection? And don’t mention the properties tab, that would be a lazy response. Also, the manager tab is laggy for some reason.

Not sure why you don’t know about it yet but I guess it’s always good to ask.

From what I understand, almost everyone hated the look of the materials on top of the fact that they also broke parity between terrain and part materials and Roblox seemingly scrapped those because of the backlash. Luckily for you, the material manager is a thing and if you got access to those materials, you can import them yourself.

God, I just wish we could change the look/size of the weird overgrown grass (image below)

It’s not too hard to change that.

All you need to do is modify the ColorCorrections a bit, to make the game appearance looks “brighter,” and modify the grass color within Terrain.

By doing these simple steps, I’ve managed to change the default grass baseplate into a world of lush vegetation.

The look, not the color.

It looks strange compared to other materials and we clearly need an alternative such as UGC terrain decorations.

We need foliage system, so that we can add wheat, grass, etc.

Adding onto that, we need an option to multi-color all terrain materials, such as grass — where we can blend different grass colors — and multi-color water, where we would finally be able blend water colors to at least make a proper shorline.

However, I agree with you. A foilage system is really needed, currently we have to model those which is a pain, along with trees.

I don’t mean the colour, I just mean the “decoration” for the grass, I just wish we could modify it.

I see. I don’t believe there’s a solution to that, all I know if that you can either;

  • Disable decorations as a whole so default waving grass doesn’t appear, or

  • Disabled decorations but put custom animated grass pieces all over the ground (though that would make the game very laggy)

Can you guys add the side materials for terrain to be applicable to parts and meshes as well? I’m trying to blend my rocks into sandstone for example but can only get the top surface materials of the terrain on the part.

Edit: I’d also like the ability to add custom terrain materials without replacing the default ones. I use a lot of the textures for my creations, and there’s not enough left over to work with for custom terrain materials.

No, I fully agree with him… The fact that it takes up an entire dock is very disruptive to my workflow. I understand that many people complain about modern features for no reason and wish to bring back legacy features, but the material manager is genuinely more difficult to use than the drop-down menu was (takes up a whole dock, takes about 15-20 seconds to change a material rather than 2-3 seconds). I wish we could at least have an option to use the drop-down menu alongside the material manager, especially since the new material manager is such a useful tool. I just don’t see why it has to REPLACE the old menu.

I personally don’t like this update at all for two reasons.

1.) Many modelers such as myself rarely needed more than what the previous drop-down menu provided. In short, the new materials are a total waste.

2.) Applying materials to a single part is also a complete nuisance, as you need to open the Material Manager, find your desired texture, and then select the application tool.

In my opinion, the original drop-down menu should have been retained, with the Material Manager accessible as an “Advanced” setting. This would be the best of both worlds for people who rarely need to use the Material Manager, and also for people who would use it frequently.

anybody else miss the old wood planks material? the newer one is much more of a downgrade

While it’s more inconvenient. To have the patience to use custom materials makes the game feel that there was a lot of thought and effort put into how your game will look. A lot of the default materials for example don’t fully allow a specialized, stylized cartoony feel for those that need it. This update will help more developers than yourself in the long run to provide more aesthetically unique experiences to the platform. A lot of games will have a chance to stand out even more in the advent of this specific update.

Will there ever be a chance we see the return of the old neon as a separate “Legacy Neon” material? You could achieve really cool looking effects with darker colored neon parts. Neon now just doesn’t give the awesome glow on dark parts anymore.

I simply don’t like this update at all. I really don’t see how is it supposed to improve my workflow while now I need to spend 5x more time to even apply a material to 1 part.

Hear me out. JUST LET US SWITCH BACK TO THE OLD ONE! Please!

(I’m talking about material manager)

You already can switch to the old materials? I may have misunderstood.

No, I mean Material Manager. I dislike it and wish there is a way to switch back to the old dropdown. Althought its possible to do it by turning off MM in beta features, when it goes out of beta, there will be no way to switch back.

So it like take’s 5x more time to apply a material to 1 part?
