I do feel that the previous renditions of both Wood & WoodPlanks from the June 2021 beta release were generally nicer-looking and seem to have been downgraded since.
Not literally, but it takes way longer than just toggling the dropdown.
Are you guys planning something similar for colors, e.g. Color Manager?
Currently using colors that are not in the standard BrickColor palette is kinda painful as you have to edit the Color3 value in Properties directly and you canât really match colors without copying the Color3 and pasting it into the other object, compared to BrickColors which you can just choose from the palette.
The old version of the material relied upon a custom blur filter to work and was actually integrated into the main Roblox shader under a definition flag.
As far as Iâm aware, there has been a lot more of a focus on keeping the shaders âleanâ and more efficient in light of all of the lighting upgrades since 2018, when the Future is Bright project started to release to production. As such, I donât believe there would be much capacity for them to resurrect the old Neon material.
Having said all this, I havenât seen the modern 2022 shader source so Iâm not completely sure how the current material for Neon works, beyond the fact that it is inherently tied to Bloom.
Ah okay, that is unfortunate but I totally understand. Thanks for information!
The old drop-down menu was easier to use than the new menu. Otherwise, amazing update! I know iâm late to celebrate, but yay!
I feel like the new material manager has severly impacted my ability to build quickly. The old one was click, find, click, but the new one is click, spend 10 seconds looking for what material I want, click, find the right button, click. I can understand why some people like this new manager, but I would really like to have a setting where you can switch between the old and new manager. New grass also needs improvement, but otherwise this update was amazing!
I also feel the new material manager has made some problems for developers like me. The old one was able to change the material of a whole model, now it canât. I wish roblox would re add the old material manager, because it was much simpler.
seems like something to be deprecated soon.
Itâs a brand new feature, why would they deprecate it? They added it so you could still keep the old style.
Glad none of the new materials are forced. Being able to swap between them is a very welcomee addition, which, I hope, wonât ever suffer the same fate as the Legacy lighting technology did.
PS About the overal material selection itself. The new way of selecting a different material does take a fair bit longer and the select button is rather small. Perhaps there could be an easier way to âquick selectâ again.
Yeah, I kinda hate this update already.
Canât even make a simple structure anymore without being pulled into uncanny valley.
( And yeah, I get that you can make your own materials but that doesnât really work if the broken moderation system permbans people sometimes for uploading a single texture. )
Do these new textures have an affect on performance on lower end devices?
most of the materials are actually good, but the worst ones are easily leafygrass, bricks, and grass.
What I believe is that Roblox should re add the old material manager, but add a studio setting to change which material manager you want to use; a dropdown menu.
Some of the new materials are amazing, but some are a bit over the top. I understand this new 2022 pack is perfect for some games but shouldnât there be a way to merge them both? For example if you want the new 2022 materials but prefer for example the legacy concrete, why canât you have the legacy concrete but the new 2022 materials on everything else?
Feels really restrictive, I would love for you to be able to switch between the two on individual materials over in Materials Service.
You can make a material variant and then use the legacy concrete and replace it with the old one.
Bug: The sidebar doesnât stay collapsed after Studio restart
This seems like a bugged feature rather than intentional, because few months prior this worked just fine.
when a texture used to have pixels with alpha lower than 255, the color of the brick would be same color as the pixel, depending on its alpha (the more transparent the closer to the original pixel color the part was).
I was trying to recreate the 2013+ (and also tried the 2009-2012) materials in order to be able to use both new and old materials in one game, however this issue is keeping me behind. I assume more people have encountered this, and might want a change, cause this would help us more.
This is what a part looks like in white and 3 other colors with the material (I have Corroded Metal (2009, 2013) and Bricks here for example
For the bricks, the white line (which is completely invisible in the texture file) is very slightly colored, if at all. And for the Corroded Metal, in both the new and the old textures, the corrosion is completely or slightly visible, but on custom ones, its completely affected by color.
I worked on the 2009 rust a while back to see if I can recreate it, and I was surprised when I saw it worked. few months later, this has been changed and my textures changed completely.
This is what they used to look like.
It would be really nice if more Roblox engineers would see this, and maybe try to bring this back to us? or at least give us some sort of a âlayerâ on our custom materials so we can do this again, because as of right now, materials such as bricks, or corroded metal, cannot be changed very well, unless the color change is very slightly, or with the use of decals/textures to replicate the corrosion texture.
