Upgraded Materials, Material Manager, and More!

THIS IS AMAZING!!! Though please, leave the 2022 materials option off for projects that haven’t been updated in over a month, so that old projects don’t look weird. Other than that, new grass looks WAY better than the first grass texture reworks we saw, and this is looking to be a legendary update.

I have some feedback on the material manager. I like that we have dedicated UI to creating new materials, but I feel that it is weird to have it REPLACE the Material Picker. I feel that the material picker was a lot more user-friendly. Also, the Material Manager takes way too much space to be a viable option for me. If we can have a better material picker instead, that would be nice.

Having the Material manager work on smaller screens would be really great since my PPI is really high.

I know it’s off-topic, but I’ve always been amazing at what you do. Do you get your assets from websites or do you personally create them? Your attention to detail is insane.

This is absolutely incredible to see from Roblox! I’ve been waiting years for this, at last it has arrived!

In your case the new grass color is 177, 255, 224, it has green channel >255, got clampped and lost. There is no color can match your original color with the new material pack.
When convert back to old material pack, 177, 255, 224 is used as color source, so it didn’t go back to the original value.

Please reconsider where the material manager button is. It’s in between the two most important buttons (part and color) and I don’t want to accidentally press it. When inserting a sphere, the buttons look too similar:

I’d rather the button be out of the Parts section and somewhere where it’s not in the way (like the advanced section)

Edit: Just realized this is how you apply materials. Nevermind.

Hi! Currently the Material Manager is much more tedious to use compared to the drop down when simply changing the material of a few parts. You have to open a window, then find and select the material, THEN click “apply to selected parts”. Maybe let us right-click the manager or something to get that drop-down so we can quickly change the material of 1 or 2 parts?

Big ask to make this update go from legendary to mythical. Give us the option to add a diffuse overlay, that doesn’t affect anything but color, and let us customize the color of it as a secondary color. This would make manmade materials like brick and pavement look a lot better.

A really huge step for us, developers, to create more type of realistic games easily, thanks for this update!!

Could someone explain to me how I can make a brand new material? Every time I go to create one, it forces me to override another preexisting material, preventing me from using that preexisting one.

I think this is epic but we do not have any way to change material for all parts in a model as Model class doesn’t have a dropdown to change Material property and there’s no way to change the materials with the material manager, the best solution I have found it’s doing it by using plugins. @JoshSedai

Each material variant you make will have a base material, you can think of it as your material variant’s type. This does not mean you need to override that material, you can also set the “MaterialVariant” property on a part to use it on just that one part.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could change the water texture using this tool? That would certainly make this feature even cooler

I tried that. It didn’t seem to work. Here’s my materials:

The pool tiles are a asphalt variant:

When I try to click on “Apply Material” with the asphalt material, it will change the part to look like the pool tiles.

Asphalt material:

Can’t tell if it’s a bug or if I’m just dumb.

Edit: I understand it now, I was just dumb. For anyone else, you have to change it for the part itself, rather than the material.

Hey! sorry if I’m missing something, but is it possible to use the normal materials, but also use some of the new materials? such as replacing sand or wood with the new materials, but keeping everything else the same.

EDIT: additionally, is it possible to only change the MaterialPattern & StudsPerTile properties of a material, and keep the texture properties the same? From what I see, I need to re-upload the textures of a material just to overwrite the mentioned properties.

Oh darn, this looks fresh and neat.
I love the update already, I’ve wanted this for ages.

To make the water like how they do water in Sea of Thieves https://thumbs.gfycat.com/KeenUnsightlyFlyingfish-size_restricted.gif

This is really well made! I’m super happy with how this has turned out, I’ve pretty much got no complaints with the system itself.

However, I would like to see some sort of fail-safe measure to make sure older, un-updated games don’t get automatically changed to the new 2022 materials. There’s plenty of classic games that don’t get updated anymore, so I don’t think the creators are going to opt-out once the beta ends. It would be a big help if this opt-in only happens once the game itself is updated.

Beyond that, I love it! Thank you for taking all of our feedback into account, I’m really looking forward to messing with these.

I do have a question that I just want to clarify, when new built-in materials are added that don’t have a “classic” counterpart, will those be able to be used alongside the classic materials?

Maybe doing a band aid fix for this that saves the old values could fix it?
