There appears to be a quiet unintended bug with the material previews in the Material Manager.
In the RobloxPluginGuiService (which I conveniently happen to have access to) each SurfaceAppearance used in the material previews is generating and uploading a TexturePack asset under your account for every Roblox Studio session you open the material manager in.
This announcement genuinely caught me off guard ā I didnāt think we would be seeing native support for material maps anytime soon. Normal maps are going to be a huge game changer for adding depth to materials.
Hi, I am getting the ā11:30:14.385 The current identity (5) cannot Class security check (lacking permission 5) - Editā Error the first time i enabled Use2022Materials, Is this a normal occurrence? The new materials do work after the error message though.
This is exciting! The ability to make our own materials will provide more creativity and allow for games to stand out more!
It is nice to see that we are able to decide if we want to use the new materials or not, as long as it isnāt forced on games made before the update.
One question that I feel is important to ask is; will we be able to make our own materials for water as well? It would be nice if we could use our own normal maps and make things like lava or acid! I think this would be the cherry on top.
functionality come/ work with Parts/Meshparts?
Would allow us to create more detailed terrain shapes that blend in with the rest of the environment, the cleanliness of the transitions would vary from mesh to mesh due to Triangle count and the geometry but it would be a nice feature to have just to tie everything together.
Definitely a lot happier about these changes. While not all materials are perfect for my uses, I can change out the ones that donāt fit with my game, which solves a major problem when this was announced earlier.
I would like to see some way to mix old and new materials though, the old grass material fits my game much more than the new one. I can upload one because of the great work here, but itās a weird use of time and feels kind of silly to need to do that.
Also, one thing I really donāt like is the material manager icon in the ribbon bar. It looks exactly like the sphere insert icon and confuses me every time I go up there for either button. Surely this could be modified, add a paint brush, pattern the sphere, anything.
Also, maybe the lighting in the viewport frames in the material manager could be boosted? Itās difficult to see non-albedo detail in the preview, and overall the icons feel really dark / washed out.
It would also be useful to have a few different colors for the preview spheres, all of my textures are black and white so when I preview a really light one on the given grey sphere, I cannot see any of the subtle detail. When I use a color the difference is sometimes a little clearer.
Hmmā¦ Perhaps make it so in the material variants, there would be original variants (the current ones) and the 2022 materials instead of just a toggle between original variants and 2022 variants, Iām sure people will find some use of this. (i know you can just make material variants out of local assets but yeah i hope you get the point.)
Absolutely the best feature for sure! Such flexibility, quality and freedom in Development! Every bit of this update is so iseful and so needed, I donāt have words to explain it. Working with this feature since the first BETA release and the results are insane! Wondering when is the full release, so textures will be seen in Live?
Thereās an important problem with this, the new materials arenāt getting resized based on distance, hereās an example of the new materials vs. the old materials
As you see, the old materials texture gets bigger once youāre far so it doesnāt look like a plain color, sadly this doesnāt happen with new materials.
This is honestly amazing, the only issue I have with it is that I have to select every part of the model to apply the material instead of just selecting the model and applying the material to every descendant with one click.
I would like to suggest a feature, select a model then double click on the Material Manager icon twice to set the material on the whole model or part
So far I am enjoying the new materials menu, tho I will say it would be nice if you were to make it easier to set the materials. With the old materials, all you had to do was click the option and it set the material for you, be nice to keep that instead of selecting material and then setting it. If the issue is you wouldnāt be able to set the parameters and other stuff before putting it on the object, why not have it edit live so you can see it in situ.
A new changes about Built-in Material is better than last year Iām so very excited to use this in full released. and thank you so much for adding a option āUse2022Materialā.
