Earn a Higher Revenue Share for $9.99+ Paid Access Experiences

Hi Creators,

Starting today, you can publish paid access experiences in local currency and earn up to 70% of the revenue they generate. We announced this at RDC earlier this year users can purchase these experiences only on computer and web in their local currency but can play these experiences on all platforms. We would like to add the ability for users to purchase on mobile and console in the future and will provide an update when we are able to do so.

Paid access experiences can be offered at three price points in a user’s local currency:

  • $9.99 USD: You earn $4.99 (50%) per sale.
  • $29.99 USD: You earn $17.99 (60%) per sale.
  • $49.99 USD: You earn $34.99 (70%) per sale.

Note that users outside the US will see these amounts in their local currency, plus any local taxes that may apply.

You can change between price points at any time, for instance to test different price points to see what resonates most with your audience. We plan to test additional price points in the future to provide even more flexibility.

Policies for Paid Access Experiences

All experiences on Roblox must meet our Terms of Use and Community Standards. Specifically:

  • Experiences must not be spam, including repetitive of existing experiences or empty experiences
  • Experiences must not be or contain scams, including teleporting to free-to-play experiences or further adding additional Robux paywalls within the experience

Additionally, paid access experiences must follow these additional policies to remain eligible.

  • Paid access experiences must offer a complete, playable experience without requiring additional payments to access any part of the core game. In-experience items, upgrades, or power-ups designed to enhance the core game however, can be priced and sold in Robux.
  • Developers may not grant paid access buyers access to content or items for other experiences

You can read more about the rules around paid access experiences in local currency here. Violation of these policies may result in loss of access to this feature, removal of content, or suspension of your account.

While paid access is not an entirely new business model for experiences on Roblox, we’re excited to expand and improve upon the paid access model and provide creators with more ways to earn. We look forward to seeing what you create!

Can I change the settings of an existing experience to be paid access in local currency?

  • Yes, you can toggle an existing experience to be paid access in local currency, paid access in robux, or free to play at any time in Creator Hub. You must be eligible for paid access in local currency to enable it for your experience. Please be aware that when reenabling paid access in local currency, there will be a short review period of around an hour before users can purchase to enter.

As with paid access experiences in Robux, users who purchase a paid access experience “own” the experience and will always have access.

For any experiences that were free and change to paid, users will need to purchase the experience to continue playing.

Can I change the price of my paid access experience at a later date?

  • Yes, you can change the price of your experience in local currency at any time.

Who can purchase paid access in local currency experiences?

  • Users from all countries, except Argentina, Colombia, Indonesia, Taiwan, Turkey, Ukraine, UAE, China, Russia, India, and Vietnam, can purchase paid access experiences in local currency. We will update you if we can expand to any of these regions in the future.

Where do I view the history of my paid access in local currency transactions?

  • Your transaction history can be found in Creator Hub under Finances > Transactions > Paid Access in local currency. There, you will see the date of a transaction, name of the user who purchased your experience, experience name, price they paid, and refund status.

How do refunds work?

  • Users can request refunds for Paid Access in local currency experiences within the first 48 hours of purchase directly on the experience details page. Refunds are not available after 48 hours have passed pending any reasonable exceptions such as an experience not being available during those first 48 hours.

When will I receive my earnings from paid access in local currency?

  • Earnings from paid access in local currency experiences will be in escrow for a minimum of 60 days from time of purchase. Creators will receive funds net of fees including taxes, refunds, and chargebacks. Creators will be automatically paid out once a month. • We are always monitoring user behavior and satisfaction, and may make changes or provide more flexibility in the future as needed.

Are paid access experiences eligible for engagement based payouts?

Can payouts from paid access in local currency experiences be shared among group members?

I can see why many people would be worried about this, but I see a lot of potential. Right now, the business model for practically all games on Roblox involve a somewhat P2W / heavily monetized flow for profit. This could allow for high quality games that simply thrive off of access purchases. I feel as though this is going to encourage higher quality production of games, as players will only risk spending real life currency for that type of content. My only wish is that there was the ability to optionally sell for Robux as well, as I could create a more expensive price using that, allowing options for the player. I’m excited to see what comes from this.

This sounds great!

Are there any plans to change Subscriptions to this payout model?

Despite being told that you’ll receive 100% of the Subscription price for recurring purchases, you actually receive this “100%” in the form of Robux using the purchase rates, which means that when you DevEx that Robux you effectively only receive around 30%.

Can users buy paid access games using Credit that is already on their account?

Why? All this does is encourage developers to sell access for a ridiculous amount.

It would be nice if there was more price options like 4.99$, 19.99$ and 39.99$

Sounds cool, but I’m not that happy, because i think there will be a lot of paid-acces experiences.

I just hope it encourages developers to not make p2w games anymore

so true, can only agree with you

Interesting update. Will look into it

Love the introduction of a new payment model, alongside keeping current Robux-based paid experiences method. Cheers for flexibility!

Will we also have subscriptions? As in you need to subscribe to be able to play the game like how World of Warcraft and iRacing do it? It would solve the issue for reduced sales after many people have bought the game already and i think it might have a similar impact on experiences like Xbox Gamepass where you can buy the subscription for a pretty cheap price to test the game out and if you like it you can either buy it permanently or keep subscribing until you dont like the game anymore

Are there an plans to give users the ability to decide which payment they want to use (Robux or In local currency)?

I feel like this could benefit both developers and users as well.

How does Roblox ensure paid-access purchases are legitimate and this wont be used as a man-in-the-middle way for devs to pay each other? For example if a dev decides to pay another dev this way it will appear as if the dev is being paid by the Roblox corporation and not the other individual/dev(unless I’m understanding something wrong about this).

It’s priced and paid in USD. Why would devs want a middle-man if they’re transferring USD to someone else?

Actually now that im thinking about it, what if Roblox could add a new perk for Roblox Premium
where users could play paid access games without paying for it one time?

This type of business model should obviously be an opt IN feature for developers and developers would also have the choice to customize it. (like making it so you get a discounted price of the game in local currency for 50%ing the game).

Tldr: basically Xbox Gamepass but developers can opt IN and change how it would work in their games.

  • $9.99 USD: You earn $4.99 (50%) per sale.

Does this mean we earn R$1422 per sale (US$4.99 at DevEx rates), R$499 per sale (as subscriptions at this price work), or are actual USD earnings being tracked for payout through Tipalti?

I can see it being used as a form of anonymity when it comes to the banks handling said transactions(because all they will see is A paid Roblox, Roblox paid B, unless of course I’m understanding something wrong).

Direct USD (or applicable local currency) earnings. Robux/devex isn’t part of this flow.
