We’re excited to announce that Import Queue is now available by default to all users. This feature allows you to open, configure, and upload several 3D files all at once. The launch also includes a number of usability improvements since the initial beta launch.
How to use Import Queue
You can add files to Import Queue by clicking Import 3D in Studio, which will open a file dialog. Select one or more 3D files (.obj, .fbx, .gltf) you’d like to import and click Open. You’ll see them start to load in the queue. You can add more files to the queue by clicking the Add file button located in the top left corner of the queue.
Once your files have loaded, you can begin to modify them. Apply presets via the dropdown, or open the file in the familiar Import Preview by clicking the asset name. Swap a file with another one by clicking the path link.
You can deselect files from being imported by clicking the checkbox. Once everything is configured the way you like it, you can press the Import button to start the queue.
You can find your assets in Toolbox, in the revamped Asset Manager, or by clicking on the asset in the Explorer and pressing “F” to focus it.
Improvements since beta
Since the initial beta launch of Import Queue, we’ve made the following improvements:
Ability to quick-select asset creator
Resizable grid columns
Many design enhancements for a cleaner UI including improved error states
We’re also working on a few upcoming changes that will be available soon:
Changing the default asset creator to match the experience creator
Ability to open Import Queue directly from the Next Gen Studio Ribbon
Adding a loading spinner state to more clearly indicate when a file is being imported
What’s next?
Our goal in the next few quarters is to transition the 3D Importer and Import Queue into a Universal Importer that can handle Image, Audio, and Video files.
Thank you and let us know if you have any further feedback.
The thing that really annoys me about this is that it doesn’t automatically select the imported object and i have to search the depths of the world to find it.
We’re looking into adding something like this! Automatic selection as it worked in the first iteration of the Importer didn’t work as well in this one because if you’re developing while uploading it would move you away from what you were doing to something completely different. We will likely require you to click on something and then you can select and/or zoom to the item.
The update is certainly very good for those who import a huge number of models at a time, but let’s say in my case there is some irritation from the fact that a whole huge panel opens due to importing only 1 model, which also causes lag freezes, from the fact that the screen space Also shrinks
And when I cancel importing a model, the model is still displayed in the import queue, to be honest, I don’t understand why…
I also forgot to insert that the settings do not take into account the “Creator”, you have to manually choose which “Creator” to publish the model from, I do not know if this is a mistake or not, but I will write about it here
I think I can see what you mean, but to be sure, if there was a way to make it compact (but still appear when you open a file), would that be better? Comparing to the original Asset Manager’s bulk importer, a small window pops up and you have to keep it open until the file(s) have been processed. Is this less intrusive?
If you hit “Stop Import”, the upload is canceled, but the session still exists in the queue in case you want to edit settings and do it again. You can delete it from the queue by right clicking and selecting “Delete from queue”.
We don’t save this to the preset currently because, similar to the name, it can depend for each import. It looks like the Creator is reset when a preset is applied, which is a bug!
I’m guessing this is primarily useful for assets that aren’t UGC because for UGC it’s pretty unhelpful (I never want to import versions from queue because I keep all my versions in the place). It’s pretty bulky and obtrusive. I wish that I could close it and not have it reopen.
Also, it took me forever to figure out how to get the previewer to pop up, and for anyone who didn’t know the previewer existed previously it would probably be impossible. It should be a button, not just arrived at by clicking the asset name.
Oh, and how could I forget, I have to click “Import” every time which slows down my workflow even more. I wish I had a checkbox for “automatically add to workspace after upload” because like…why wouldn’t I want to add the asset Im working on to studio every time?
PS: @georjozh that is the funniest use of my burrito body Ive ever seen, and I salute you for it
I personally would like to have a toggle button perhaps in the view tab, but a good alternative for right now is the minimize button. I almost didn’t remember it as a feature
It’s always appreciated to see your feedback @Reverse_Polarity.
This is helpful, thanks, we’ll bring these concerns (also voiced by @Sleeby_Lamb) to the rest of the team.

I usually import around 10 meshes a day, but it’s spread throughout as scene needs are made clear. The import queue only serves to slow me down and cause annoyance. The legacy behavior of only opening the import settings window before importing the mesh was much, much faster and simpler. Would it be possible to perhaps get a “Quick Import” button or option? I would prefer to skip the queue and not have it rearrange my interface.
I don’t at all remembering enabling a beta, so I’m going to assume that either I was special and got it early, that the beta auto-enabled itself, or that I accidentally misclicked it, but I’ve had literally nothing but problems with the import queue since it was enabled for me.
There’s been times where I click the “IMPORT” button in the import preview menu, it closes the menu but does nothing and then clicking the button again in the import queue ALSO does nothing, causing me to have to either clear the queue and do the entire process again or just restart studio if it happens time after time again.
Adding on, the import queue always goes to a really weird spot at such a tiny size no matter if I move it elsewhere.
Plus, now I only really ever import .FBX models when I absolutely need them, which makes the import queue absolutely useless since I only import 1 model at a time which will import correctly, and with the bugs I’ve encountered with it (as well as the issues others have pointed out) its just a complete annoyance that I’ve already grown to despise and want a toggle to disable to just be able to go back to the old behavior.
In comparison of the old Importer, I prefer the old one as it’s features weren’t unoptimized as the new one is. The new one has a lot of issues such as continuous choice of either prompting to open the preview to import screen or not. If it doesn’t we have to do it manually, which in the old one that issue didn’t exist.
Then there is the whole ordeal with the importer sometimes failing to import (going above than 100%) or either overlaps with previous imported asset that was caught by moderation and breaks when imported with all edges conflicting with each other.
To be honest, I feel like I lost more features than I’ve gained from this new Importer.
+1 to what @the_empressivy said, it is incredibly helpful to hear your thoughts and understand how we can make things better. We’ll be working with our design and product team based on the feedback in this thread, so keep it coming!
For having to click “Import” every time, if all of the files you’re opening have the checkbox ticked and you press the import button on the queue, the files should start uploading in a batch. If you have “Studio Default” selected as the preset, then by default they should be added to the workspace. If any of this isn’t happening for you, please dm me a video!
