Next Gen Explorer now available for everyone!

Honestly, I feel like it’s far from ready. There are still so many quality of life issues that need to be fixed.

A callback to my previous post in here, the F2 bug really needs to be fixed - it was in the previous explorer and stays in the new explorer, it annoyingly hurts my workflow when I have to change a name, I try F2, it won’t work, I have to manually move my mouse to the properties menu and change it there.

Godot is better than this, and it’s not nearly as popular.

I agree with this. For me the scaling issues make it difficult and odd to work with.

I had to switch back to the original explorer for two main reasons -

  1. I am not a fan of the compacted dropdown menu when selecting something in the explorer, it immediately reminded me of Windows 11 and how its desktop UI behaves now.
So instead of right clicking and then clicking a function once, you now need to click a total of three times to reach some features like selecting the children or parents of a model, as these are now in the hierarchy sub-menu. This may seem insignificant but it can absolutely slow down workflow over a longer period of time.

  2. If I remember correctly, selecting an object such as a meshpart that has other objects within - like surface appearance - now selects both at the same time, which tripped me up a few times and also feels slightly slower than the original system. In actuality I don’t believe that this has significantly changed the behaviour of the old explorer, though it certainly feels that way.

I have a few complaints with this new Explorer:

  1. Hierarchies are less clear; The old version used to use the X Axis much more exaggeratedly for the UI to show what parts were under each other, but now they are bunched up making it less clear.
  2. Using Shift to Select multiple parts; I’m not sure how it’s intended to work, but right now if I select one part and shift click a part lower or higher in the hierarchy, parts that I would expect to be highlighted are not highlighted if they are parented under something.
  3. F Camera movement keybind chooses not to work sometimes.
  4. The right click menu having additional menus is a hassle.

Please make it so dragging instances with the right mouse button is possible, like the old explorer.
Right now, it opens the options menu. I use it because when I use the mouse wheel to scroll, I use the index finger, and to drag an instance with the left mouse button will mean to scroll with the middle finger which for me is awkward.

Had this bug earlier when randomly clicking it was constantly spamming in my output

I’ve been having problems with keyboard shortcuts not working as well. I had to revert to legacy Explorer. You can do this by turning off the associated Beta feature.

I have just issued a bug report on this in the Studio Bug Reports forum. You can view it here:

In both versions of Explorer (the legacy and the new beta one), keyboard shortcuts intermittently do not work.

i came back hours later and it seems the bug fixed itself… for now.

“We’re excited to announce that performance upgrades and quality-of-life improvements for the Explorer”
Proceeds to make an even more terrible version of the Explorer that feels more like a pre-alpha rather than beta

Hey, I’ve noticed I have a few controls issues that started happening to me when the new explorer released:

  • Pressing F to zoom to an object in the world sometimes doesn’t work
  • Pressing CTRL + U sometimes just doesn’t work for me
  • And now my backspace won’t delete objects. (in the world, NOT in the script editor. I already know you guys know about the script editor issue)
  • Idk if this was fixed yet, but also I can’t scroll properly when dragging an object. I have to move my mouse up + scroll up if I want to make the explorer scroll up and vice versa.
  • This one might be intentional, but clicking the “Parent” property and then clicking away from it (like clicking another property for example) parents the object to nil. (again, idk if this is intentional but it’s a new behavior that hasn’t happened to me before)
  • My folders in the Workspace that hold all of my game’s stuff keep opening. It completely clutters the explorer and is current making it extremely difficult to work.
  • The scroll bar is impossible to see for me because it’s extremely similar to the color of the background. I am on light mode and I haven’t checked if there is a way to customize this.
  • Can no longer press anchor on a folder to anchor all of its children.
  • Can no longer press F on a folder to zoom to its descendants, although this might just be the F key randomly not working.

I’ll keep adding as I find more

I feel like random keybinds decide to stop working sometimes. It’s happening to me, too.

Hey, great feeling on the new features, however why did you guys change tab when renaming items in the explorer, pressing tab now functions as an extra space instead of selecting the next item below to rename it faster, I really don’t like this change…

the dropdown arrow on frames ( or maybe more stuff ) sometimes don’t work

my only complaints:

  1. double-click to rename is missing
  2. “Paste Into At Original Location” got moved into a submenu
  3. the tab itself doesn’t seem to remember the order i put it in
(i usually have the tabs set up like this, but whenever i open Studio it opens with Explorer on the right side instead):

apart from those three things i can get used to this, it’s a nice replacement so far and i haven’t felt any massive urge to revert

randomly this plus icon will not be shown when i hover over the item, very unreliable pls fix.

Would spam this every time I moved my cursor.

100% I really wish they reverted this. Pasting at original locations needed 99% of the time you paste something and adding that extra step seems so unnecessary

They’ve done the same thing with the ‘Insert Object’ button, which is in a sub-menu too now.

The new explorer is lovely and it makes life a lot easier I just wish they reverted these two things.

Text rendering on the new Explorer is absolutely terrible.

Another bugs, not sure if already addressed:

  • using the scrolling frame to scroll all the way up does actually not scroll to the top-most instance

  • right click acts as a click when being in select mode (like of ObjectValue) - cannot turn my camera around and move closer to the desired part to select it when select mode is active

  • the Explorer window does not remember it’s place or maybe takes too long to load - I have Explorer and Properties in the same “place” and even though I always put Explorer first in the tabs, it always ends up being second upon opening a place
    image

    • already said it but clicking anywhere else outside of game ViewPort cancells ObjectValue or Parent selection (I remember I could switch between Explorer and Properties just fine before) - not good when you need to select a Model/Folder (can’t really use the ViewPort for that)
  • saw already reported for plugins but the UI selection is broken everywhere (I experienced the missing selection for SurfaceGuis)

  • one cannot see others’ selection if in team create

features suggestions

Otherwise I like the fact that the dropdown menu has collapsed features, no idea why everyone is so mad about it - it looks much better when there is less stuff at once. Could someone maybe explain what is driving you guys so crazy? If you use something a lot, set a shortcut for it (I know they are broken rn but the fix is on it’s way).
