Next Gen Explorer now available for everyone!

Hey Creators,

We’re excited to announce that performance upgrades and quality-of-life improvements for the Explorer, currently in beta, are now rolling out to everyone. With the new Explorer, you can build much larger places without worrying about lags, hangs, or crashes, and it will be quicker and easier to manage instances in the explorer. Since our beta release, we’ve been working hard to incorporate your feedback and are excited to release the new explorer more broadly.

What’s changed?

Check out our beta announcement for specifics on the improvements! In short, we’ve rebuilt the Explorer in Luau with a much more performant architecture, allowing you to manage millions of instances without Explorer being a bottleneck. We’ve also added tons of quality-of-life improvements, including better selection highlighting, hierarchy lines, an overhauled context menu, and better drag and drop, to name a few.

What’s new since the beta was released?

Firstly, we fixed almost all of the known bugs from our beta release, including box select, custom icons, and scrolling improvements. We’re still running into some issues with blurriness, specifically on high DPI monitors, which we hope to address soon. Moreover, we’ve made even more fixes and improvements based on your feedback, which include:

1. Information density

We’ve increased information density based on your feedback. Here’s what the beta originally looked like vs now:

After

2. Drag-and-drop

We’ve made it easier to drag objects in the explorer; simply hold the object at the top or bottom of the explorer window to automatically scroll the Explorer until you hit your drag target.

3. Shortcuts and keybinds in the script editor now work
4. Performance fixes to support higher refresh rates
5. Package Icon and Status
6. Various bug fixes for scrolling, context menu, and insert object menu

When can I expect to see the changes?

We’re rolling out the beta to all users today, and we plan to remove Next Gen Explorer from the beta feature menu in the next few weeks.

What’s Next

We’re planning to release even more improvements this year to make organization and quick editing easy from the Explorer. The Properties panel will also be receiving some performance and quality upgrades in the near future to make finding and editing properties easier, so stay tuned. In the meantime, we’d love to hear your continued feedback on the explorer in the comments below!

Special thanks to @Dogekidd2012, @tnavarts, @pensive_penguin, @CaiusCosades0, @jimjamjomj, and @wengawenga for getting this feature off the ground!

One thing I would love from the explorer is the way to assign a color to a CollectionService tag and see it from a glance. I use CollectionService tags a lot, and it’d be nice to show all objects tagged with, lets say, KillBrick, with a red circle.

Besides that, if you’re moving towards Lua GUIs as the future of Studio, Roblox GUIs needs better subpixel text rendering, currently, small text is very pixelated and hard to read when its small.

(sizes are different because the text is larger with the new ribbon)

I’ve been using this since the beta was announced and I have been pleasantly surprised with it. I know some people reported hitching or slugginess but on my (admittedly really good) systems I’ve not noticed it at all.

One thing I will say is that I miss the arrows on the scrollbar for moving up and down a single line. I know that we as a society have seemingly moved past having those, but I miss them and am sad that they’re gone.

Also it makes the plugin widget look a bit old. It’s like when Studio first got the ribbon UI but I was on Windows XP so everything looked ancient except for the ribbons.

Also, when in a script, you can’t use the Del key to delete objects in the workspace.

Good catch! We’ve fixed this for a bunch of other shortcuts but I will get out the fix for this for an upcoming release.

This was the 1 thing stopping me from using the new explorer. Thank you roblox!

Thank you for your work, but there are two glaring bugs that are still incredibly inconvenient.

After searching in the explorer and selecting something, the scrolling frame position is not preserved.

Fixed by restarting studio.

Scrolling with mouse wheel while drag-and-drop is not working properly. I understand you added the new “easier” drag-and-drop feature, but I still want to scroll the explorer with my mouse wheel for quick drag-and-drop most of the time. Right now it behaves very strangely.

In the following video, I am scrolling my mouse wheel up and down the entire time. The scrolling frame only responds when I move my mouse in random directions simultaneously:

Wait, so this is fixed?

What fast flag?

Personally, I don’t really care for this change and yes, I like the fact that it fits more with the modern style.

The only problem I have with it is the fact that I can’t use the vanilla icons with it, which still prevents me from wanting to switch.

EDIT: I just realized that the Vanilla Icons do in fact work with the new explorer. And ngl, that new UI looks clean (aside from the new studio layout one)

We have a fix for this in flight., so you should see it sometime soon.

Did you record this recently? We rolled out the fix for this yesterday.

I have a question - is the new explorer available to everyone, or only the beta is accessible to everyone? I don’t see the new Explorer yet in Studio, so I’m curious when it will be fully released.

After restarting studio, it works now. Thank you.

My Studio crashes when I open the old and new explorer at the same time. This didn’t use to happen before.

How to fix?

It’s an opt-out beta, so everyone who didn’t change the setting will have it on. If you don’t have it on, it probably means you turned it off earlier, so I would just flip it again.

I’ve been using this feature for a while now and it’s been nice seeing it get more and more stable. I can’t wait for the property window revamp.

I’d like to feature request a way to clear your search history. I don’t personally have a large use for it, but some people might want to do that. Plus, it’s more consistent because you can already clear your history in places like the Toolbox search.

There shouldn’t be any way to open both the old and new explorer at the same time–if you’re able to do that, I suggest making sure you didn’t change any FFlags. We do not promise any stable behavior when changing FFlags directly as a user.

Thank you for the clarification!

I never enabled the beta Explorer - actually, I never even knew about the beta until now. Since beta features can be more unstable than full-release versions, I usually just wait for the full release instead.

If I understand right, since I never toggled the beta-setting, it sounds like the new Explorer should have been auto-enabled for my version of Studio then?

Yeah, it should’ve, so that’s strange–either way, flipping the beta feature manually would get the same result.
