It was ours to begin with, so Roblox at this point is just looking like some desperate 5 year old trying to get it’s hands on money by reselling a public sound I mean it was a sound that they bought but…
a long rant below
OK, THIS IS ENOUGH, STOP IT YOU ARE PUBLICLY MAKING DEVS IN THE SAME DEPARTMENT FEEL LIKE THEY ARE LESS AN YOU ARE POSTING ADS ON A PUBLIC FORUM
AHEM… LET ME CORRECT THAT LAST BIT PROFESSIONAL PUBLIC FORUM
Roblox… you are in all honesty just acting like a child right now
I am so glad to see someone else on the same page as me. Time after time Roblox shows that not only do they not understand their developer community, but they openly spite us, treating us like second class citizens and completely ignoring our wishes if it is the least bit beneficial to them as a company.
We saw this with Roblox’s long-standing negligence to improve developer resources such as the devforums (which let’s admit are a total mess, all of the categories are full of meaningless junk and moderators will happily eat you alive for minor infractions on posts that otherwise raise the value of discussion) and the devhub (which was the replacement to the perfectly good community-run wiki, hundreds of valuable articles and tutorials completely lost in the transition, the devhub was lacking core functionality for YEARS, such as the abysmal search engine which was only just recently fixed).
We saw this with Roblox’s incredible lack of transparency and complete dismissal of our petitions to raise DevEx rates, where they kept us in the dark for months on end after baiting us with promises to introduce a revolutionary new monetization strategy at RDC, which turned out to be premium payouts (which overwhelmingly favor the top games, run off of some arbitrary equation that nobody knows, and ask us to sell Premium subscriptions in hopes of earning some measly amount, a total failure in comparison to just selling a gamepass).
We saw this when Roblox pushed forward with their “Global Compliance System” (which for anyone with more than two brain cells, is obviously designed specifically to expand Roblox to China). Wherein developers are now economically pressured by Roblox to bring their games over to “Roblox China”, compromising on core ethical values by censoring their games to the whim of the China Communist Party, such as removing references to the sovereignty of Taiwan, and to completely sell the safety of their intellectual property to Tencent. All discussion that was even slightly critical of this move was essentially censored on the devforums, moved to a separate thread that was invisible to the rest of the community. For the record, Roblox never addressed these concerns.
Roblox has disrespected and abused our community’s trust and goodwill so many times in recent years. I am beyond disgusted by the company, and I am absolutely not thrilled to see how the company further devolves once they officially go public.
Glad to see the announcements category being used for advertisements.
Whats even worse is that if you buy the sounds, you still have to pay to have them uploaded to Roblox. Insult to injury.
we should move to unity, the situation has become dire and needs attention
though, staff not replying and taking these comments is a little bit crazy I think this is one of those cases where Roblox is just trying to strengthen relations with tommy and trying to compensate, but not getting a answer for almost 4 hours from any staff is disturbing
Roblox has hired literal dozens of people to their “Developer Relations Team” yet I have not seen their developer relations improve by a single smidgen. When faced with rightful criticism from the community, instead of being forthright and coming out with a clear acknowledgement of said criticism right from the get-go, instead they hole up and hide and try to wait out the wave of criticism, so they can later sneak in a non-answer and pat themselves on the bat for “resolving” the issue.
I’ve seen them do this same tactic numerous times. It is a true testament to how out of touch Roblox has become with the life force of their platform, their developer community.
Honestly, I feel this isn’t the best way of handling this. I get the push for user generated content and would love to see more user generated content but this seems more like an advertisement.
Furthermore, Instead of using this announcement to promote Tommy’s SFX pack this could be used to promote up and coming SFX designers.
Truly, I am not interested in supporting this man financially or reading about him.
Tons of developers have notifications on this category to be notified of important development updates. It should not be used for advertisements.
Instead of removing the oof sound it would be so much more preferable to come to some other negotiation because it is so iconic to Roblox.
I will keep an open mind about this and see what happens. I just hope things go well but my expectations are not high.
I cannot even begin to put into words how disgusting this post is. I’m beyond disappointed that Roblox is losing such an integral part of its identity in the iconic death sound, and is also using its announcements category as an advertising space on top of it.
I Hope the public opinion on this post weighs on Roblox and its staff heavily. It’s very clear from a lot of posts here that they are missing the mark hard when it comes to what the community desires.
Can content creators get copyrighted if one of Tommy’s audio’s plays in a game that doesn’t have rights to use those audio’s? If so it could cause a ton of issues with new and already existing content.
