Asset Privacy and Permissions: Share Audio and Video With Groups

Hi Creators!

Last year, we launched an asset privacy and permission feature that enabled you to share your audio and video assets with your friends. Today, we are excited to announce you can now share your private audio and video assets with your groups. Group members can use the assets you share in any of the group’s experiences.

Note: This doesn’t impact any existing upload requirements and policies for audio and video.

Sharing with Groups in the Asset Permissions Page

For private audio and video assets you or your group own, you can now navigate to Creator Hub > Creations > Asset Details > Permissions. There, you can share the asset with one or more of your groups. To share an asset with a group, you must be a group member, and have a “Create and edit group experiences” role.

Sharing an asset with a group does not automatically insert the asset or grant access to their experiences. After you’ve shared the asset, a group member will need to insert it into any of that group’s experiences to grant that experience access to the asset.

For group-owned assets, any member who has “Create and edit group experiences” permission in the group can share the group’s assets with other groups.

If an asset has been shared with one of your groups, you can find it in Studio > Toolbox > “Creations” > “Group Audio” and “Group Video”, and select the group that the asset was shared with.

Removing Shared Access

You can always remove access to any of your shared assets. If you remove access for one of your groups, they can no longer use that asset in any additional experience. However, all experiences where that asset has already been inserted will continue to have access to the asset.

What’s Next?

As we mentioned in our roadmap, we’ve been working hard to extend the functionality and give you the option to enable privacy and permissions for your meshes, mesh parts, decals, and images. We expect to launch the beta to all creators in early 2025. That launch will also extend the audio and video sharing with groups and friends functionality to other asset types and include enhancements that will benefit all creators.

Stay tuned!

We’d love to hear your feedback, so please share below. Thank you!

Great update! I’m eager to have permissions extended to other asset types, however we still need greater insight into asset ownership per-game, and bulk editing for assets.

If a creator who has the “Create and edit group Experiences” permission shares audio/video with the group, and then loses that permission, does the group retain access to the assets? Or does the asset become private to the group again?

Great change! I had this issue some time ago but this will make it better for the future.
Love the updates recently

This is a cool update :coefficients: i assume it’s still referred to as “Groups” according to the “Introducing New Permissions to Creator Group Roles” post?

(part i’m talking about)

Probably a drafted-scheduled post or some miscommunication happening internally with the Product Designers and the Engineers

This is great!! One thing I’d like to suggest although would be being able to bulk edit permissions, it’s really tiring to have to go through hundreds of audios.

don’t do this. its going to break some games like ones that got there decals from something like a Decal Container/pack or a mesh from a asset packs

It’s great that we can now assign audio permissions to communities!

However, a feature to add multiple audio permissions at once would be a useful addition. This functionality seems promising though and looks like it will get many improvements in the future.

Just curious, are the terms “groups” and “communities” similar to how “experiences” are called “games” in Studio but “experiences” on the platform?

Can we make it possible to limit Images as well to specific groups, incase my image gets stolen by another game, it should only be used in mine, making theirs useless.

I would love to see better asset privacy for Models specifically. Right now models have only 2 options for privacy: either everyone has access to the model, or only the creator has access to the model. But this is very limited. I would very much appreciate an option to share model to specific games, groups and friends.

For example, in my use case, players create obby maps within Roblox Studio and then upload it as a model to be able to play in my game with other players. To make this functional, i’ve had to use a burner bot account to automatically acquire the maps from the players. I’ve also had to put this in a separate game from the main game due to InsertService:LoadAsset() limitations.

Honestly, my workflow (as well as many other devs) for user-generated models would be a WHOLE lot simpler if better model privacy were implemented.

Roblox’s been hitting the nail on the head lately with all these updates! When can we expect to do the same thing with animations? Would be super cool too!

If you leave the group, will the group continue to have access? I’m assuming yes, but this isn’t explicitly talked about.

Being able to make audios over 10 seconds public when?

I actually thought they had forgotten about this specific addition to private audio sharing. Guess not.

Group will still have the permission. And creator can revoke group’s access to their asset, even if they don’t have “Create and edit group Experiences” anymore.
