[Beta] New Studio UI Updates

[Update] September 25, 2025

Hello Creators,

As we continue rolling out our new Studio UI to more creators, we want to share a quick overview of the layout and functionality. Additionally, we have some new information for those who’ve been following along and have provided feedback.

Quick Overview of the New UI

We completely rebuilt the menu and ribbon toolbar UI to be more stable, consistent, and customizable. We’ve been in public Beta for over a year and appreciate all of the feedback you’ve given us. Lots of things have moved around, so here’s an overview of the primary interface elements:

Several new menus have functionality that used to be tucked away on the handful of static tabs. These menus are always within reach regardless of which tab you have focused and it also gives us some more intuitive organization options (example: need to import a 3D file? That’s under File > Import 3D!). We have worked diligently to ensure any tool that was accessible in the former UI is also accessible in the new UI in one way or another. Here’s a guide to help you find some of the most common actions.

We also recognize having tools in the ribbon tabs is a long standing pattern many of you are comfortable with. Therefore, you have the ability to fully customize the ribbon tabs in any way you’d like. This includes putting plugins on other tabs or adding a button to a ribbon for a feature that’s currently in a menu.

For example, always wished you could have your favorite plugin in the Home tab? Simply right click on the Home tab, duplicate it, hide the original, and add whatever tool you’d like to the new copy. You can also change the tab ordering and rename it to anything you’d like.

You may also notice the buttons in the toolbar that have little triangle indicators on them. You do not need to click the triangle to drop them down, simply long press anywhere in the button area to make the drop down appear. We are still tweaking the timing and logic on these.

New Compact Density Options

We didn’t stop customization at the tabs! The number one feedback during this beta has always been how “spaced out” the new UI has felt. So we have introduced two different density levels, default and compact, that you can choose between by right clicking in the ribbon area. If you want the absolute most compact layout, select compact and disable the tool labels. If that’s not good enough, collapse the ribbon so it only appears when you mouse into the area.

We’re also working on updating the color palettes and icons for Light and Dark themes. These color palettes are aligned with the Roblox global design system but it will take time to get all of the Studio UI switched over to using the same color values consistently. We have heard the community loud and clear about wanting to fully customize spacing and colors. It’s something we want to support eventually.

FAQs

I can’t find [X feature]. Where is it?

  • If a feature was on the ribbon tab in the old UI, it may now be on another tab or menu. If you want a feature back on the ribbon, you can always add one back to the ribbon by creating a custom tab.

I use [X feature] all the time and now it’s too hard to get to.

  • We tried our best to keep the most commonly used tools within easy access but we realize everyone works differently. We encourage you to get familiar with customizing toolbars (did you know plugins can be on any toolbar now?). If it’s something you use very frequently and it accepts shortcut keys, we strongly recommend binding a shortcut for frequently used tools.

I don’t like the colors.

  • First, that’s not a question. But second, yes this feature does bring a color update with it. These colors are closer to the global brand color palettes BUT THEY ARE NOT FINAL. We realize the current contrast ratios may be uncomfortable and our design team is working on updates.

Can I turn it off?

  • Yes, you can toggle it off as long as the “Next Gen Studio Preview” Beta Feature is in the list. We understand this is a big change for creators that have been using Studio for many years, but we strongly recommend getting used to the new UI and features sooner than later.

What’s next?

  • Mostly bug fixes and testing. We don’t plan to make any major feature additions as we focus on the full release. After the initial release, we will continue to add features and improvements.

When will it be released?

  • Late October With such a major change, we have been taking a slow and steady approach. Starting this week, we will be testing the new UI with new creators and, assuming there’s no major surprises, we will continue to ramp up from there. We will keep it as a beta feature during this rollout period. We will closely monitor stability and feedback and determine when to remove the beta status and, shortly after that, we will sunset the old UI system. We will update you as we get closer to this point.

Why can’t you just keep the old UI?

  • The old UI is not just a difference in colors and UI layout, it’s an entirely different collection of systems than the new UI. Not only would this be difficult to support, it would also be difficult for adding new features to Studio. The new UI is much more flexible and stable which means we will be able to add fixes and features faster than ever before.

I’m SOOO glad that we can finally now collapse the toolbar!!! This was the only thing that was REALLY holding me back from wanting to use the new UI (aside from beta bugs). I do wish that there was a way for us to minimize it with a small button though…

After this ui comes out of beta, will there be an option to use the old ui? Some people won’t like using the new ui for productivity reasons and personal preferences, I personally know some developers that won’t like it. It will be nice to have the old ui be supported enough to be still usable.

Praying that the UI elements created here is open sourced, even if its React, which I despise with a passion, I’d take it if it means I get some really cool Studio-like UI elements

This doesn’t actually look half bad, well done roblox!

I’ve been using this sicne last June, very exciting it’s finally matured and I’m excited to be able to customize it in the future. Most people begging to keep the old UI are just stuck in the past and I have had zero trouble adjusting to this new UI.

Is there any eta on when hover state fixes will be out for stuff like pressing play and the topbar stays open even when not hovering, or when custom icons for stuff like vanilla will be out for the new UI?

Also will there ever be an option for the collapsed toolbar to be click to open and click to close instead? I’ve been using it for a while and I’ve really disliked the new behavior, since it adds extra time to open, and 9 times out of 10 I have to click anyway since I don’t have it open to the tab I want to use

Been using this for a while and honestly my only actual gripe now is the occasional tooltip hiccup that I’m assuming will be addressed by the time it rolls out properly. Custom tabs are genuinely so useful I could never go back

My custom script editor colors got reset with this update. :frowning: Time to redo them all I guess

i’m just curious is there an ability to change color of the background? tho i understand it’s new roblox’s branding colors, i really don’t like dark interfaces

UPD

i’m actually waiting for custom themes, thank you for your work!

Good to hear that it is still optional, had some issues with it when I tried it before. Since there’s a new announcement I guess I’ll try it again.

Would we be able to have an example toolkit of this new UI—so we can match this style for plugins.

Would be helpful if we would have the colors/values for:

  • Background Color
  • Background Selected Color
  • Border Color
  • Border Thickness
  • Padding Offset
  • Margin Offset
  • etc (foreground colors, hovering colors)

So the ribbon buttons still have the same width regardless of how wide their text is… I’m dissapointed.
I’m really glad we can have plugins in our tabs though! Very useful for plugins that do what studio doesn’t yet should…
As much as I like the compactibility settings, I wish we could customise the padding values rather than just removing parts of the information or setting them to a pre-set lower value.

Please also consider giving us a 1 year transition period after the new ui is considered “complete”, rather than forcing us to transition in a time when its still being developed and improved. This will make it much easier for us to transition as we won’t need to familiarise with an ever-changing system but instead will be a much easier 1-1 transition.

I really like the new ui. When i first enabled it i was like “Why did you remove things i used so often, plus it just looks bad” Now i actually really like it.

Any chance the window buttons can be inset into the UI itself  it pains me that 30px is wasted on just these the buttons at the top-right, when it could be combined in to the empty space down below it.
